    2. RE: The book "Seven Generations of the Decendants of Aquila & Thomas Chase" by John Carroll Chase and George Chamberlain (1928), I have it and would be pleased to look up names if anyone would rather not spring for the $93. You may not get instant turn around, but I'll do my best as time permits. (e-mail rachase@aol.com) I have the Seaver document, too, but my trust level of anything by him is very low. (He totally screws up the Aquila issue). The book has no name index, so finding people in it is purely a needle in a haystack search proposition. Dick C.

    2. Re: Lisa's posting about the Aquila mentioned in the "Tales of Old Chesham" -- If this is the Aquila, son of Richard, b. 1580, then he was indeed a Chesham Chase, a fact which never has been in dispute. It's the Hampton NH Aquila b. 1618, and his brother Thomas, whose genesis is a mystery. (By the way Lisa, if yopu do ever come back across that book, I would be interested in its publication details so that I might run down a copy.) The name Aquila is (New Testament) Biblical, being first mentioned by Luke in Acts 18:2 in reference to a Jew who, if I remember right, had had to flee Rome. Paul also refers to an Aquila in several of his letters. Dick C.

    3. Hi all, Ginger was kind enough to fill me in on the Noble book as per my personal request...Thank you Ginger! Here is the information via Ginger (hope you don't mind Ginger), and what I have found out since: "The Chase Family" by Arthur H. Noble Heraldry Today 10 Beauchamp Place London, S.W. 3, 1967 Printed by Headley Brothers Ltd. Being the "Web Surfer" I am (I am a biochemist and do a lot of research via the web) I found the Heraldry Today web page and how to order: http://www.heraldrytoday.co.uk the book is 20 "pounds" (sorry, I don't know how to type the symbol for the monetary value). How much is that in US dollars? I am not sure it is stock, but I have requested information from them, and will know soon. I would appreciate replies to this CHASE Group with the subject Chase Books, where we would make available the books we have found on the Chase line, with publisher info, and publishing dates. I am very new to all of this, and just received the "Seven Generations..." book (by the way, it is back in print, go to http://www.midcoast.com/~picton to order) and am learning as much as I can as fast as I can. I get married in September of this year, and would like to have a little Chase to give all of this to. So, let us ("newbies") know of your reference materials, and how to obtain them! 2. Dear Lisa, and Chases, I am not going to bore any of you any more about the Aquila question, but like you, Lisa, I must admit, when I first ran across the unusual name I too wondered where it came from originally. Like you I have never run across that name anywhere else. That's one good reason for thinking somehow the Aquilas are all related. Especially enjoy your humor, Lisa. when one is digging around in the middle of all of these papers with who was born---who married whom----When did they die questions---it's refreshing to see a humorous comment mixed in. Keep it up. Keith has that ability too. I think in his case it's that Australian heritage. We went on a tour to Ireland one time with all Australians and the whole trip was a riot--we laughed and laughed until our sides ached. Our guide happened to be a former Priest. The start of the trip was on Easter Sunday and the first thing on the tour was to visit a Whiskey Factory in dublin at 11 in the morning (Easter). To say the least that got the group started off in a very festive direction. Well, after that visit the Priest switched gears and kept taking us from church to church in each town we visited. Finally on the last day--the Australians had had their fill of looking at the inside of churches so when the Priest proceeded to stop at a church---the Australians all put their feet across the aisles of the bus and told him "Enough is enough" "We'll nap right here and not go into another church---and look at old bones again". To say the least the Priest was baffled by it all . I don't think they question such things in Irland as they do in Australia and America. Ginger in Az.

There was a previous article in Aug 1996 (that I have not read). There is some information about Thankful's father, Reuben, and their flight from NY in 1783 to NB. The article was written by Elizabeth Pearson White and Edwin Wagner Coles. If you are unable to obtain this article please contact me for further information. Barry Price

    2. Hi all of you out there, I love this corresponding with all of you Torys. After being a member of the boring DARs here with their attitude I find this is really stimulating. It is interesting that so many of the Chase descendants in later years (excepting of course the WWs) did almost anything to get out of fighting---being Quakers, paying their way out of Civil War etc. It all boils down to the fact that they hated to fight in wars apparently. I am not even sure any of them became great generals. Now you certainly don't see that with the Sherman Clan---connected to the early Chases and William of Cape Cod. They were WAR ORIENTED. 1. [CHASE-L] CHASE DNA
    2. Hello Rex (and group), Some of what has been stated by other people is wrong. Somebody wrote that the odds of having the same DNA as a cousin is slim, since the DNA gets mixed and divided every generation. That is true if we are talking about any cousin, but it is not true if we are talking about male cousins linked by a surname (I'm sure there are many on this list). Assuming no infidelity, two male CHASEs who are descendents of William will have the same Y chromosome. The chromosomes from each parent are put together and jumbled when eggs and sperm are made, this does not happen to the Y chromosome, which means that every man has "exactly" the same Y chromosome as his father, his father's father and so on. So if the Y chromosome never changes then you would think that every man in the world would have the same one, since we are all related if you go back far enough. Actually, the Y chromosome does change a tiny bit because of random mutations. So if the Y chromosome changes enough, but not too much, then you should be able to correlate surnames with Y chromosome DNA. The problem is that we (scientists) do not know how much it changes. Currently, the same group that showed that a man in Cheddar, England is a descendent of a 10000 year old mummy found there, is also checking to see if Thomas Jefferson fathered any children through one of his slaves. Keith's point about infidelity is important. Infidelity is the nightmare of most genealogists. That is assuming that you are interested in exactly who your ancestors were. We all enjoy (are addicted too) genealogy for a number of reasons (investigating, learning about personal histories and interesting characters, etc.), but one thing I hope we have in common is to find out as much truth as we can. Eventually DNA will allow us to find the mistakes and infidelities in our genealogies. Personally, I love to find tidbits of scandal in my family, it makes the investigating that much more interesting.

Kathleen Lee Mendel Without first mentioning what is known, one should not introduce the unknown, for that which has no solid basis can never be established anywhere.
