I, too, am a descendant of William Chase, Jr. and his second wife. I at first was told that Abraham was a son by his first wife, and she was believed to be Abigail Hale, but I have been unable to find any information about her or her family. Recently I have received information from the book on Some of the Descendants of William Chase of Yarmouth, and the book shows the following: "William Chase, Jr. of Yarmouth, born in England as early as 1627, died at Yarmouth Feb 27, 1684-5. He married first abt 1644 ________and secondly ___________It has been said that he had four children by each wife and that his second wife was Elizabeth Holder. One Christopher Holder of Olveston Co., Gloucester, England came to Boston in 1656, but since he espoused the views of the Quakers, he was banished in 1659 and fled to Newport, RI. He married August 12, 1660 to Mary Scott. Among his 9 children born at Newport was Elizabeth Holder, born January 4, 1664-5, who, when William Chase died would have been barely 20 yrs old. As it has been claimed that the four youngest children of William were born of his second wife, as as the eldest of these four children sold land in Harwich in 1695 and therefore must have been born as early as 1674, when Elizabeth Holder was only about 10 yrs of age, it is impossible for her to have been the second wife of William Chase. No other Holder family has been found in New England before 1700." My records show that the first wife had William, 111, Jacob, John and Elizabeth, and the second wife had Joseph, Abraham, Samuel and Benjamin. I am descended from Abraham, and am still wondering who his mother was. However, I don't believe that Elizabeth Holder could have been the mother of either set of children. If William was born abt 1627 and Elizabeth Holder was born 1664-5, thats 35 yrs difference. I'm still searching, maybe someone can find something to fill in the blanks. Keep searching--- Holly M. Keith, I agree fully with what you say about Ginger's book. First, I declined, then I offered to do the list maintainer task, I maintain several at work. But, I may have confused Sammy, because I never heard back from him. If yo need a maintainer, let me know. Hi,Debbie, I am sorry but could you send the chased64.htm and rename it chased65.htm I had left the previous version in my incoming directory and am not sure which version I have. It appears to be tha same a the one I have in my "upload" directory. As a general rule I would appreciate amy updates being identified either by adding a letter or number this way if I am silly enough to leave previous copies in my in box I do not get confused, Keith At 15:03 22/06/98 -0700, you wrote: >Here are changes attached to page. > >DContent-Type: application/octet-stream; name="chased64.htm" >Content-Description: chased64 (Internet Document (HTML)) >Content-Disposition: attachment; filename="chased64.htm" > >Attachment Converted: C:\UKONLINE\EUDORA2\chased64.htm > Keith Hume, email khume@netcomuk.co.uk CHASE-L Website at:- http://www.surnameweb.org/centers/c/chase/index.html http://www.netcomuk.co.uk/~khume/home.html Kent,England Researching:- HULME,DAWSON,(In Lancs.) I have had a talk with the College of Arms in London. They will no longer confirm that a Coat of Arms in the name of CHASE/CHASE/CHACE exists. It was explained to me that the reason is that records are neither computerised nor on the site. The scale of costs for the service of establishing whether or not such a Crest exists varies from $100 to $200 dollars. For the latter service, I understand you get not only any Crest details but also a PEDIGREE of all known variants. I will be receiving full writen details of the Service offered and will scan and copy to the Group. If you do not have a facility for looking at graphic .gif files I could send a transcript. I cannot afford to foot the bill myself but I would be interested in knowing if any of you would be prepared to contribute. I would certainly contribute $20 myself as I believe this needs resolving. To allay any fears anyone may have as to the disposition of any monies collected for this purpose I would suggest that if we do go ahead someone in the US collect any pledges as sending me various amounts of dollars would not be a good idea. PLEASE DO NOT SEND OR MAKE "PLEDGES" UNTIL I RECEIVE THE LETTER FROM THE COLLEGE OF ARMS AND YOU ALL HAVE A COPY. Keith Hume
V, I am not sure which Elizabeth you are talking about here. The LeVaughn name is known to me and I am meeting Lisa Campbell(the lisastuart in the emailaddress) at the HUME family reunion in MA in July. I assume you are refering to William b.1597. If so there is a record of a William CHASE born to a Benjamin CHASE at Wivenhoe in 1597. The names of child and parent are convincing as is location and date. A copy of William's Birth from the Wivenhoe records is included in Ginger Reeder's excellent book. While on this subject Ginger's book is one of the best I have seen on this subject. Correction THE best. Lisa I would be most grateful if you sent these queries to the GROUP. All the info in the Database was supplied by GROUP members and I only feel competent to answer for my own part. At the moment I am getting something like loads emails a day associated with this Group. Many of which should be answered by those who are more competent to answer than I am. Furthermore these are then archived. While on this subject Sammy samuelson asked for volunteers to take over the Mailing list. Has anyone done this? Dear Beth, Genpia, First of all---When writing to you -e-mail---how do we address it? Just Genpia??? All of the William line undoubtedly is terribly happy to hear you connect with William, that you live right in the middle of this ROOTs area of the Chases Berkley--Freetown, Ma. and also they're undoubtedly pleased to learn that you too are interested in pursuing genealogy. How could we be so lucky? Also, that your cousin Lisa in Canada communicates with you all of the time and she connects with the Humes. (Keith's Clan) Undoubtedly there will be much to share when you all return from the family reunion. Now about Freetown and Berkley---This part of Ma. is so cozy, rather quiet, and certainly a far cry from the Boston area. I hope you will share some of that small town feeling with all of us. You mentioned the cemeteries in Berkley as well as Freetown. I had to laugh a little as it brought back memories to me. Though I have not been fortunate enough to have been in Berkley (and do hope to), I have been to the Chace Cemetery in Freetown with my 1,2,3rd cousins. In fact, one of them spiced up the place by having her picture taken in front of one of the headstones you refer to in your message to me. She laid down flat on her back in front of a Chace headstone and then proceeded to put a big flower in her mouth that was sticking straight up in the air. I love that picture as I added it to my book. (Of course you have to expect that kind of behavior---as we represent the WILD WESTERN CHACES--Oh., Mo., Ne.). I apologize for sending off Blanche's tel. number (the local Chace/Hathaway Historian) as I realize she is probably not well enough to receive phone calls even though I know she would be more than happy to share. Forgive me. Anything you can share with this group will be well received I'm sure. To share about the history of the towns would indeed be interesting. We are grateful to Keith Hume for "taking the ball and running with it." The Group is getting bigger and bigger . Only an Australian--turned British could possibly have such patience. I know the Aquila descendants will be happy when they once solve the problem of the links---if any---with the Chesham Aquila---- and the William group will be happy to find Mary's last name. Those who know that Mary's last name was NOT Townley---will be happy to learn that people have accepted that. All of this time poor Keith has to accept all of this information and then try to straighten it all out. Mind boggling. Then again, we all should be quite happy. So many people who had ancestors who came over 3 or 4 generations later certainly can't link up as well as we can at all. Enough of this. Thanks again for your bright and airy message. Don't go away. Ginger in Az.
Dick, Thank you for your very generous offer. I am interested in anything that might be in the "Descendants" book on Mary Chase, born January 17, 1686/87 in Tilsbury, Middlesex, Massachusettes, daughter of Lt. Isaac Chase (1650-1727) and Mary Tilton (1657-1746). Please take your time on this request, as I'm dabbling in genealogy and will be around for a long time! I would like to say, also, that I have benefited so much from the intelligent exchange of information on the list about the ancestors of Aquila and Thomas. Thank you for sharing your research with us. Janis Bunten Fayetteville, GA
So does this mean the Holder woman was not his wife? D

Dear Elizabeth, I'm jumping up and down with excitement. After receiving your nice note I was reminded of my contacts with another Berkley Chase/Hathaway descendant I used to have communication with when I was mapping out our cousin visit about 1991. Blanche Trzcinski at 725 Berkley is her name or was her name. Tel. # 1-508-824-5367. She is a Shreve descendant---He was also connected to the Chases---a MInister---Harvard graduate---lots of interesting history with that family too. She was absolutely loaded with information on all of the connecting lines to the Hathaways and Chases. She lived in a Hathaway house there too. As I recall she was not well at all and partly blind I think ---so she may not be around any longer unfortunately, but it's worth a try. She was the one who talked for hours about our connection to the Tew family and how they were Privateers and (Pirates) and real characters. She was going to conduct a tour for us in Freetown but became ill so we lost out on that wonderful opportunity. By the way---if Phyllis Silva is still around and you are interested---she is a good person to locate in Pawtucket as she was historian and archivist in R.I. at the Capitol for the Governor. She ran off reems of copies for me at the time and then 2 years later she conducted a tour for us. I even was invited to her home where she had her entire basement filled from floor to ceiling with records on the old families in R.I..---including our Shermans. At the time she said she would move ---oh my---I think it was Arizona---could it possibly be? (I had no idea at the time I would EVER move here, but we moved here for my husbnad's health---and it has indeed been much better.)--Back on track--- But then---there is a Sherman group---on Internet and---very sophisticated too. Keith has had lots of contact with them and can certainly be wonderful help too. They are far more informed than I about all of that family, however I still have mounds on their Butter connection that I need to put together and share. The Shermans had so many famous people connected to them that it is really quite easy to research them. Am I moving onward to too many of your lines for you? You see we are cousins way back of course. As you can tell---I am quite hooked on the hobby. I am terribly impressed with the fact that you are the selectman---woman for Berkley. Please share with this group what you can about this interesting town and what you do to make it better. We are really so interested in learning all we can about it. How do your names look in the phone book? What historic houses can you find that show our lines? Oh, you are indeed a very lucky person to live there. Your Le Vaughn name is not familiar to me. I don't think I have run across this interesting French ? name. Perhaps the LDS Family History Library can help you. Also, your own Berkley Library or the Sturgis Library can help out. Freetown has a fine Historic Society too with many fine collections on your Hathaway, Chase/ce lines. (I sent them my book on the Chases last year). Well, Elizabeth, do you see how excited you have made me? We finally have someone in our ROOTS area who can be a good link for us. Don't go away. Ginger in Az.
Thank you Debbie for the kind words, Appreciative people like you are what make all of this enjoyable. Have a great time and do let us hear all about it when you return from Chasing your roots in Ma.----- and R.I. if you go there which is so very close. Snooping around the book stores is another intersting thing to do for genealogists especially in that area. The Sandwich Museum (I mentioned this earlier I think ) has some of the Chase Pottery on display also the Sommerset Museum. The Town Hall in POrtsmouth has a lot of Sherman's memoriabelia--and I never got there so if you do connect please let us know. Ginger
I have William CHASE born about 1627 in England, died 27 Feb. 1684/85 in Yarmouth, Mass. He married first about 1644. He married second perhaps Elizabeth HOLDER. Maxine
Becky, Boy, you are a lucky girl. You are going to have a wonderful chasing time. If you connect with the Shermans then be sure to go into Portsmouth, R.I. nearby. Sommerset has a museum where they have a Chase collection on display. Have you found your connection to Lizzie Borden yet? If so, then you would want to follow up with that. Also, Richard Borden is the connection to Winston Churchill. Berkley is a Chase place plus Hathaway. You might connect to all of the Chases and Hathaways in Freetown too. They literally owned the town at one time. I guess I could go on and on here. Have a great time. Ginger
Hi Debbie, According to the book William Chase of Roxbury and Yarmouth, Mass., William's second wife was Elizabeth Holder and they had 4 children 1. Abraham, Joseph, Benjamin, Samuel; Ginger Hope that helps.
Now there IS something to throw a spanner in the works! PURCHASE!? The prefix PER, pronounced the same as PUR means "by". Perhaps, only perhaps you may have been right and these PURCHASE may have been connected or just possibly they got the name from living "by"(per) the local Chase or Hunting ground. Could it be that Purchase could be part of the Clan........? Do I want to know this......? Well I am a WILLIAM descendant and I am beggining to think I may have been lucky!! The Chase Database has been updated. For the statisticians among you there are now 9,007 names in it. Hi all you Chasers. I am going to Mattapoisett, MA, next week and hope to do some "chasing" of my own. (Mattapoisett is between New Bedford and Cape Cod). I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions of good Chase places to visit in the vicinity -- especially Dartmouth -- or if any one has done any vital records research in that town (the area is crawling with Chases!) I have traced my grandfather, Walter Bradford Chase (1903-86) from Boston to William Henry Chase (1868-1955) born in Taunton to Henry Allen Chase (1842-1920) believed to have been born in Dartmouth to Jeremiah Chase (died October 11, 1858) married to Cloe P. in Dartmouth on Feb. 16, 1834. Most of the dates I got from my mother's cousin; I discovered the towns through the NEHGS indexes to vital statistics. Interestingly, in both the Taunton and Dartmouth indexes, the NEHGS spells the name as Chace. My grandfather and his father definately spelled their name Chase. Cloe P. Chace is listed in the Broderbund 1870 Census Index living in Taunton. No mention has ever been made in my family of a name change! Also both Henry Allen Chase (Chace) and his brother Cornelius birth dates are cited in the index as from the "Rebellion Record." Cornelius enlisted (but for what?). Does anyone know what the Massachusetts Rebellion Record was? Thanks in advance for any info/advice! Becky Goodwin Kangos
