    3. Hi,Lisa, I can tell you that no CHASE appears in the Rogate Parish Registry from 1601 to 1628. Rogateis now in West Sussex and I have checked and there is no such entry. There was likewise a false report that William jnr was born there about 1623/4. As I have said previously the family were probably non-conformists and he "might" have been born there, but in the Parish Register-No way. With such an obvious error on such a key point one is forced to ask just how much of Gladys Chase's book is true. 1. [CHASE-L] William Chase of Rogate?
    2. Dear Chasers, I received the following e-mail back in January, and lost it in the black hole I call my desk. It is a quote from "William Chase of Yarmouth" by Gladys Marie Chase. "William Chase was born in England about ? 1595 ? 19 February 1605, the son of Benjamin Chase (page 37 of Rogate Parish Register, Sussex County), it is said by some that he came from Essex County." My question is this - Is there a William Chase on page 37 of the Rogate Parish, Sussex register? If so, does anyone have a theory on who this William is? I am extremely curious! Thanks All, Lisa Zajkowski

    1. [CHASE-L] Eben / Epenetus Chase - son of Loyalist Reuben Chase
    2. Hello Group, I thought I would offer one more bit of evidence that Eben Chase, son of Reuben, and Epenetus Chase, son of Reuben are the same person. As the decision on combining individuals in the database lies with the group, I decided to post this, instead of sending it to Keith. Please tell me - or Keith - what you think. Although this son of Reuben is listed as "Eben" in most Chase genealogies, I submitted a line from a copy of a letter I have written by his niece, Salome Johnson, asking how her "Unkle Epenetus" was doing. I agree that is probably not convincing enough. In Esther Clark Wright's, "The Loyalists of New Brunswick," the following is listed under land grants for the surname CHASE: Ebenetus Chase - 1st grant, Gr. Lake. This is the first time I have ever seen "Eben" and "Epenetus" referred to as the same person. What do other Reuben descendants think? Warmest Regards, Lisa Zajkowski

    1. [CHASE-L] Re Chase Coat(s) of Arms
    2. k.hume
    3. ALL, I have received a reply to my query re CHASE Armorial Bearings from The College of Arms. A copy of this letter will be found on the CHASE site on the "Meanings" page. It takes a little while to load (114k size). I should make it ABSOLUTELY clear that when making this enquiry I did NOT just specify Dedham & Wivenhoe. These places were mentioned as being where CHASE family lived as was CHESHAM,CORNWALL and a possible WELSH connection. On the basis that it was decided to go ahead I am assured that the search will cover ALL the records of the last 600 years. I should also make it clear that the cost applies for the search so that should there be nothing then the charge is still made. Unbelievably there is no Index kept on all the Arms granted. I am informed that these run into thousands. All books are checked not just those for one area. I found this incromprehensible but I was informed that this was to ensure that no one else could get meaningful records. You will see that they are asking for any information re the families etc and if application or granting of Arms was made. CAN I ASK ANYONE WHO HAS ALREADY SENT IN INFORMATION TO ME TO REPEAT IT PLEASE SO I KNOW I HAVE ALL AVAILABLE IN ONE FILE. When I suggested it seemed like a way of ensuring income this was not denied. The whole thing is not Government or Royal funded and their expenses are very high. Another point for clarification concerns the genealogical research. The information we would get would be a description of the genealogy, who, and where and when but not actual details. The reason is that there may be more than one for the same individual and it could be lengthy. A seperate charge would be made. Estimated cost would depend on how lengthy the information was. This is because in the middle ages Royalty would often send out Heralds to do an Accounting of Armorial Bearings in the various counties. These were called Visitations. The main purpose was to ascertain how much tax each noble could be expected to pay. The Herld was required to do a "family tree" of any Arms Bearing person or who claimed the right "to bear Arms" Henry VIII it was who was the most diligent and in fact was responsible for the first organosed gathering of tax in the British Ilses The College will not permit photocopying of any documents. For my own part I believe this would be money well spent providing the cost does not fall on one individual. In particular it would appear that the CHESHAM Chase family appear to be the most likely to have been granted Arms. I am willing to put up the first 20 pounds (36 dollars) of the total of approx 196 dollars required. I also feel that if people want to contribute the money be sent to someone in the Group who will then order direct or forward the money to me to do. I say this because the cost of transfering money from USA to England in small amounts could be expensive. Anyone any ideas? Keith Hume

    1. [CHASE-L] Chase Loyalist's Eastern Canada
    2. greg
    3. Hi Everyone, I'm trying to follow up on some research I did on the Chase's in Nova Scotia year's ago. Evidently a number of New England Chase's that were Loyalists emigrated to Nova Scotia in the mid to late 1700's. My research showed most or all of them to be related and descendants of William Chase who came to Mass around 1630 and ended up in Yarmouth around 1638. His great-grandson Stephen Chase b. 2May1709 in Swansea with sons Joseph and Jethro were grantees in Cornwallis township in Nova Scotia around 1760. Zaccheus Chase b. 3March1759 also emigrated to Falmouth township Nova Scotia the same year (also descendant of William). I was not successful years ago linking my family to this line in Nova Scotia although it appears most likely. Working backwards my g.g.grandfather was James William Chase b. 10June1849 who married Annie Freedom Barkhouse. His father, my g.g.g.grandfather was John Chase with mother's name Julia (maybe) but that's all I have. My theory is that the descendants of the previous named Chase's that emigrated to Nova Scotia would provide the missing link but researching the web those lines that went to Nova Scotia always come to an end!! Any information on Chase's emigrating to Nova Scotia would be appreciated. Greg Chase Republic of Korea

    1. [CHASE-L] James and Mary Chase of Cedar and Plymouth County Iowa
    2. I'm looking for help in tracing my Chase family in Iowa. There daughter married in Cedar Co. Iowa, in 1864. I believe the family came from New York to Iowa. I found Mary Chase buried with her daughter Esther Priscilla Mae Chase Peron in Plymouth County Iowa. Cedar Co is on eastern side of Iowa and Plymouth Co on the western side. James and Esther Chase Peron moved to Plymouth Co after 1880. There is a Chase family in neighboring Woodbury Co IA that is connected to Aquila Chase. One of their sons moved from Woodbury to Decatur Co Iowa, same township, and at approx. same time (1897) William Peron, son of James and Esther, moved to Decatur Co. I suspect there's a connection. 3. Hello All, Is there any possibility that Wm. Jr. didn't have a 2nd wife at all - and the 4 youngest children attributed to him were really the children of his son William's 1st wife? The dates would fit much better, they would be much closer in age to their wives - it just seems more logical. Also, William 3rd could easily have beem married before his recorded marriage to Hannah Sherman, since he was already 31 years of age at that time. I have no evidence, just this working hypothesis that it makes more sense out of the records in existence. Compiled by George Walter Chamberlain for John Carroll Chase                  Hazen P. Chase                   Holyoke, Mass.                       1983  2.  WILLIAM2 CHASE (William1), of Yarmouth, born in England        as early as 1627, died at Yarmouth 27 Feb. 1684/5. He married        first, about 1644, (???); and secondly (???). It has        been said that he had four children by each wife, and that his        second wife was Elizabeth Holder. One Christopher Holder        of Olveston, co. Gloucester, England, came to Boston in 1656,        but, since he espoused the views of the Quakers, he was banished        in 1659 and fled to Newport, R. I. He married, 12 Aug.        1660, Mary Scott. Among his nine children born at Newport        was Elizabeth Holder, born 4 Jan. 1664/5, who, when William        Chase died, would have been barely twenty years of age. As        it has been claimed that the four youngest children of William        Chase were born of his second wife, and as the eldest of these        four children sold land in Harwich in 1695 and therefore        must have been born as early as 1674, when Elizabeth Holder        was only about ten years old, it is impossible for her to have        been the second wife of William Chase. No other Holder        family has been found in New England before 1700.  Rev. John Eliot, in his records of the Roxbury church (pp. 73-74), stated that William Chase came with his parents in 1630 and was "a child of ill qualitys & a sore affliction to his parents." As "William Chase Junr" he was listed in August 1643 among the Yarmouth men between sixteen and sixty years of age who were able to bear arms. (Plymouth Colony Records, vol. 8, p. 194.) He was probably the William Chase who was in the military service from Yarmouth as a "drummer" from 24 Aug. to 2 Sept. 1645, and received an extra fee of 5s. for his services. (Ib., vol. 2, p. 91.) The following entry is found in the records of a General Court held at Plymouth on 6 Mar. 1654/5: "William Chase Junr. for goeing into the house of Richard Berry, and taking away by violence a p'cell of flax and a smale p'cell of hose yarne, was sentanced to sitt in the stockes an houre on a training day att Yarmouth." (Ib., vol. 3, p. 74.) He lived near Herring River, on the east side of Bass River, in Old Yarmouth, in the part which is now either Dennis or Harwich. On 2 June 1685 it was ordered by a General Court held at Plymouth "that Capt. John Thacher & Mr. Barnabas Lothropp [are] to setle the estate of William Chase, of Yarmouth, deceased." (Ib., vol. 6, p. 170.)        Children, probably by first wife, born at Yarmouth:     4. i.    WILLIAM,3 b. about 1645.     5. ii.   JACOB, b. about 1647.     6. iii.  JOHN, b. 6 Apr. 1649.        iv.   ELIZABETH, m. 27 May 1674 DANIEL BAKER, son of Francis and               Isabel Baker of Yarmouth.         Children, probably by second wife, born at Yarmouth:     7. v.    ABRAHAM.     8. vi.   JOSEPH, b. about 1673.  Page 50    9. vii.  BENJAMIN.    10. viii. SAMUEL.  ---------- > From: snead <snead@bellsouth.net> > To: CHASE-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [CHASE-L] CHASE, William Chase, Jrs, children > Date: Monday, June 29, 1998 1:53 PM > > I am receiving mixed messages on the mother's of Wm Chase, Jr's > children. 3. I am receiving mixed messages on the mother's of Wm Chase, Jr's children. I have heard that he had eight children, and it is believed that four were by his first wife and four were by his second wife. There are conflicting reports as to which children went with which marriage. Is there anyone who, as accurately as possible, can tell which children were born of the first marriage and which were by the second? I have been told that Abraham, my father's 7th great grandfather, was the son of wife no. 1 and then told that he was by wife no. 2. Could someone give the birth order of the children, and if there is any validity, however small, that the mothers were Sarah or Abigail Hale as 1st wife, and Elizabeth Holden, as 2nd wife. I have read "Some of the Descendants of William Chase of Yarmouth" and would like to know who I should be trying to find as mother of Abraham Chase. Thanks for any assistance. Holly M. 3. Although I have added further names to the database I am not uploading the revised version as usual, this week-end. I am awaiting a a copy of FTM before I make a choice between that and Legacy. Both these programs allow more extensive notes and are mora compatible with the more popular programs. I also have a "CHASEs of Chesham gedcom" from Dick Chase and following his very well reasoned treatise on this subject I want to include it as Notes to the dbase, Keith Hume Keith Hume, email khume@netcomuk.co.uk CHASE-L Website at:- http://www.surnameweb.org/centers/c/chase/index.html http://www.netcomuk.co.uk/~khume/home.html Kent,England Researching:- HULME,DAWSON,(In Lancs.)
