    1. [CHASE-L] Display of Arms
    2. For all my CHASE cousins, here is a disertation on the Display of Arms for family lines. I hope it will clear up some misconceptions. Everyone is not entitled to display the Coat of Arms. The Marjoribanks/Marchbanks family has been granted permission to wear a badge. These were made up in pewter and are quite handsome. Bob Marjoribanks is the Secretary of the Marjoribanks Family. This also includes the names Marchbanks, Marchbank, Banks, Marshbank. Hope it helps. Subj: Display of arms Date: 98-07-04 15:50:26 EDT From: mjbnks@sympatico.ca (Robert Marjoribanks) To: MARJORIBANKS-L@rootsweb.com Purrs: In reply to your message about the discussion among the Chases about the right to display a coat of arms: Alastair Campbell of Airds, Unicorn Pursuivant of Arms, wrote in an article published in The Highlander, January/February, 1992: "The Scottish system of heraldry is well controlled and is reckoned to be the purest in the world. It is founded on the principle that arms belong to one person at a time only: it cannot be repeated too often that in Scottish heraldry there is no such thing as a clan or family coat of arms." Many people display over their fireplace a coat of arms that belongs, or at one time did belong, to somone of their same name. They are not going to be sent to jail for this offence but it is generally considered by knowledgeable people to be in bad taste. As Mr. Campbell points out. a coat of arms is personal property. In the same periodical, in 1988, Sir Crispin Agnew of Lochnaw, the Rothesay Herald of Arms, explained the origin of the clan or family badge. In the olden days a chief would identify his followers by giving them a replica of his crest which they attached to their arms with a belt. (The crest is not the coat of arms but the topmost part of a coat of arms and is often a bird or animal or plant. In the case of Marjoribanks of that Ilk, it is the upper half of a griffin, emerging from a coronet.) Since the 19th century the badge has been shown as the crest, surrounded by a belt on which the motto is displayed. Sir Crispin writes: "All clansmen have the implied authority of their chief to wear the badge, but the chief may withdraw permission for it to be worn. . . . Men may wear the badge in their bonnet or by convention on their sporran . . . Ladies may wear the badge as a brooch to indicate their allegiance to the clan." Sir Crispin says it is improper to use the badge in any other way, for instance as a signet ring, on writing paper, cutlery or glasses etc., but this rule is so widely ignored that it now has little effect. In short, a coat of arms is the personal property of an individual, chief or otherwise, who is recoignized by the College of Heralds. The clan or family badge may be worn by any member of the clan or family as a sign of loyalty to the chief. Priscilla Chase Marchbanks (Purr)

    3. All, I may not have made myself clear on this. Would ALL those interested in obtaining any information regarding a Genuine armorial ,(coat of arms) for any member of the CHASE family please email me with an indication of how much they are willing to contribute. For those who may have any doubts as to the security of collection of these funds one of the Group whose credentials I have checked has offered to collect the money in the USA. I would like to thank all those who have sent information regarding this subject. They are all very similar so give hope that there is a genuine crest for the CHASE family. Keith Hume

    1. [CHASE-L] Look-ups
    2. Does anyone have any information on Allen Chase of Dartmouth, MA, who married Deborah Buffinton of Dartmouth on September 19, 1799? I bought a copy of Burials and Burial Places in the town of Dartmouth, MA, last week. Published in 1997 by the Dartmouth Cemetary Association and the Dartmouth Historical Commission, it lists burial records for over 100 Chases and Chaces (mostly Chaces). It inventories all the existing gravestone markers and what they say for modern-day Dartmouth (it does not include cemetaries in the original township of Old Dartmouth which now lie in other towns). I'd be happy to look-up or check any information for anyone. Becky Goodwin Kangos

    1. [CHASE-L] William's wife - Sarah or Abigail HALE
    2. Dear Chasers, Assuming John Chase, son of William Jr, was the product of William's union with Sarah / Abigail Hale... Has anyone ever found out who she was? There must be some research into which Hale families were in Massachusetts in the early 1600s? How many could there have been? Does anyone know anything about Miss Hale? Thanks everyone, Lisa Zajkowski

    3. Hi Group, Below is the answer to my enquiry asking permission to post this month's issue of a genealogy newsletter called"Treasure Maps" to the CHASE-L list. The newsletter is a copyrighted e-mail publication which contains a little advertising for Mr. Ragan's publications and he does solicit donations. Be that as it may, the newsletter IS free and you don't HAVE to buy anything. I am in no way connected to the newsletter except as a subscriber. Now, with that out of the way. The reason for this message is that this month's issue contains some web site addresses that will benefit some and have an interest to many. Subscribe as follows if you want to. Just write "Subscribe TM" in the subject area. Send e-mail to Robert Ragan at: ragan@leading.net J u l y 1 9 9 8 E d i t i o n Hi Lonnie, Thanks so much for asking... But please do not post to the list. What has happened before is that someone (well meaning) posts to a list - then someone on the lists thinks that I am spamming them - and then they start sending me nasty e-mail. Would you mind just mentioning Treasure Map's and saying that you like this month's issue (or something like that). It's free, so the folks can sign up if they want. Thanks again - and thanks for understanding... :-) Robert "Treasure Maps" How-to Genealogy Site Published by: Robert Ragan http://www.firstct.com/fv/tmapmenu.html P. O. 1. [CHASE-L] Rev. Ezra Chase
    2. I found the following information on the descendants of Rev. Ezra Chase that differs from the printed genealogy "Descendants of Rev. Ezra Chase". Hoping someone on the list can help clarify this. The abstract of Ezra Chase's will mentions a daughter, Huldah MARVIN, deceased before 19 Nov. 1868. She left the following children: Julia, wife of Samuel Marvin of Havana, NY; Amanda, wife of Oliver Purdy of Warren, Illinois; Lois, wife of Lee Sellen of Castile, NY; Elizabeth Fox, widow and Eva Marvin of Eddytown, NY. Daughter Sally is listed as Sally CHASE b. 11 July 1806 d. 18 Feb. 1882; md. Aaron INK; three children. The abstract states Sally St. John, deceased; left Catherine, wife of C.D. Ensign of Mt. Gilead, Ohio and Betsey J. Carpenter of Richmond, Iowa. No INK children mentioned. Second husband's name? Jane E. CHASE b. 11 Mar. 1816; md. 2 Apr. 1831 Brayton BROWN. Again, dau. Jane, deceased, left by first husband, Brayton Brown; Herman Brown of Wisconsin and Nelson and Zeno Brown of Enfield. By second husband, John EHLE; Lillie, adopted daughter of Daniel H. Chase, and Jane Ehle. IF I READ THIS CORRECTLY, THE DAUGHTER LILLIE WAS ADOPTED BY HER BROTHER, DANIEL H. CHASE. Happy Fourth! Joan Gerrits
