    1. [CHASE-L] Sons and Daughters of America's First Families
    2. Has anyone ever filled out the application for Sons and Daughters of America's First Families? I was just wondering if it is on the up and up. It seems that you register your family for $10.00 if you can prove to be one of the families that came to the US in the 1600's. I can do this but I don't know about sending this guy all of my research unless someone else has tried it! The web site is: http://www.linkline.com Thanks! Kim

    3. ALL, Some time ago I came across a set of volumes entitled the American Biographical Index,(A.B.I.),doubtless many of you know of this. This is an index of biographies,(250,000 of them), of famous Americans in about 6 volumes and published by Saur. Some time ago I noticed there were about 200+ CHASE people from William of the Winthrop fleet on down. If memory serves me the index is for microfilm/micro fiche copies of these biographies that are held by the Library of Congress. Recently I looked in a copy of this index which is held by the local library and again I believe these biographies are obtainable either on inter-library loan or possibly for purchase. As I live in the U.K. this might be awkward for me but I would be interested if any of the Group knew or could find out more about this. It certainly seems like a good source for family research. 1. [CHASE-L] Obed or Obediah CHASE TN>MO>KS
    2. VICTORIA L SULLIVAN
    3. Sometime back I posted a query to this list regarding Obediah CHASE b. abt 1830 in Tennessee, d. 1863 or 1864 in Missouri, parents and siblings unknown. Since then, I have received his widow's Civil War Pension File, and I am now even more confused than before. Obediah m. Minerva Herd MERRITT (b, 1831 in Grainger Co., TN, daughter of Edward MERRITT and Sarah (Sally) Hazeltine CARDEN) 17 Nov 1850 in Grainger Co. TN. They had at least three children - Minney Elizabeth CHASE b. 12 May 1851 in TN, John Edward CHASE b. 7 Dec 1855 in TN and Sarah Hazeltine CHASE b. 1 Mar 1857. Obed CHASE enlisted as a private in Company D 25th Missouri Volunteers 6 Aug 1862 (under the shorter version of his name). What happened after that seems to be subject to interpretation. Army records list him as deserting on the march to West Plains, MO 23 Jan 1863. In her application for pension dated 24 Oct 1870, Minerva says he died 24 Sep 1864, killed with "many others" in an attack by "Anderson's Guerilla Squad of men". On this application, she includes a fourth child, Lewis F. CHASE, without including a birth date for him. Minerva's brothers Lewis MERRITT and Ancil Lee MERRITT filed an affidavit 13 Mar 1879 in support of their mother's claim for a widow's pension on their father's War of 1812 service. In it, they stated Minerva and Obediah had two daughters and four sons. Obediah "is said to have been killed in 1863 on the He. & St. Joseph R.R. between Hannibal and St. Joseph by Bill Anderson's band of rebel bushwhackers." On 10 Dec 1886, Minerva again filed for a pension. This time she listed only three children, Minney Elizabeth, John Edward and Sarah Hazeltine. Perhaps having recounted the months between her wedding and Minney's birth, she stated she was married 8 Aug 1850 by Justice of the Peace William COLVIN in the JP's home in Grainger Co., TN. As for her husband's death, she gave the following account - "she believes {him} to have lost his life by the hands of bushwhackers (by reason of the fact that their oldest son whom the Father {sic} loved as his own life was dangerously sick: that she sent a letter to her husband informing him of the condition of his son. She believes by the best evidence she has obtained that aforesaid husband did obtain some sort of a furlough or verbal leave of absence to enable him to visit his sick child and that during his passage from Big Creek south of Pilot Knob and between Pilot Knob and St. Louis Mo. she has reasons for belief that her husband Obediah Chase aforesaid was captured and slain by a band of bushwhackers.) about the last day of January or first of February A.D. 1863." Apparently the Pension Office wasn't having any of it, and I have no evidence that any of Minerva's applications were approved. She appears in the 1860 US census Center Twp. Doniphan Co. KS p. 29 (Obediah is listed as "A. CHASE for some reason) with children Nanny E. 9, Jno. E. 5, Sarah H. 3 and Joseph T. 5/12. Also in the household is her orphan niece Amanda WYRICK, 21. The next household is her widowed sister-in-law Lavinia MERRITE and children. The household after that are my 3g grandparents, Joseph SHELTON and Minerva's sister Permelia Ann MERRITT and their three children. In the 1880 census I found Minerva living with a child named Louis F. CHASE, 15, giving him a birth date of 1865, but she apparently wasn't always accurate with dates. The wording of the 1886 pension application specifically refers to legitimate children "yet surviving who were under 16 years of age at father's death", by which I assume neither Joseph nor Lewis survived to 1886. I do not know the name of the fourth son referred to in the MERRITT brothers' affidavit, but I assume he also died young. The copy of Minerva's 1886 application NARA sent me is missing the bottom of the page. Minney Elizabeth was listed as the wife of J.B. WYKERT. John Edward is the head of (presumably his own household, but the next line is missing). It is just possible to make out that Sarah H. is referred to, but not the name of her husband. If any of these people ring a bell, I'd love to hear from you. I have extensive material on the MERRITTs and Doniphan Co. KS that I would be happy to share. These folks aren't in my direct line, but the picture of Minerva from her lawyer's letter, broke and in failing health, after losing her husband and three of her sons, is sadly compelling. I'd like to know what happened to her. Victoria Sullivan vlsulliv@jps.net

    3. Hi folks, Just noticed that Brother's Keeper now has a version supporting PLOTTERS. I don;t know how it works, but have often thought for big trees and presentation it would be nice to use a plotter (like a draftsman's, the kind that does blueprints). So at least there is a program, and I am sure it would not be too difficult to find a plotter. Here in my own area, a local photographic development shop that also posterizes pictures, can do it all digitally. For those using BK 5.2 for Windows , (or even those not I gess) here's the address for John Steed's homepage http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/Brothers_Keeper/changes.htm Derek Chase

    1. [CHASE-L] Winter -- Genealogy -- & More
    2. >From a genealogist colleague: Picture a cold, bitter winter in the ancient lands of yesteryear. The falling temperature has made it necessary for everyone to seek shelter indoors. The men who hunted and tended the fields no longer can spend extended periods outdoors and away from those with whom they disagreed. The women who bickered and gossiped found themselves closed in with others--many of whom they did not care for. Imagine the goading, the wise cracks, the veiled and unveiled insults directed at one another. One man says: "Krill cannot shoot a true enough arrow to fell a blind deer. How do you expect that his errant shaft or his words to find the heart of a maiden?" The others snigger and Krill goes red with shame. The ancients were used to dealing with human nature. One method for bringing peace and good will to the clan was the custom of gift-giving. One must give to receive and one must give to the family and to the clan. One must forgive in order to be forgiven and one must forgive to keep order in the family and the clan. In these cold months when all must coexist and cooperate--when being driven out into the cold of the night sky could have fatal consequence--the wise ones among them declared that there be a period of celebration. The custom of the Yule log arose and the men worked together to drag the huge log that would give warmth to the hearth. The people exchanged gifts, as it is difficult to be angry or nasty to one that has given you something to treasure. Though times have changed, our natures seem not to have changed that much. But let us not forget the lessons passed to us by our ancestors. When the bitter winds howl, when adversity raises its head, when natural and unnatural pressures seem more that we can bear, then it is time to give a gift, spread a kind word, flash a smile and comfort one another. In this spirit, I give you a gift--a gift of personal words, the only kind of gift that can be given in these circumstances. That these words were written about my father who died some twenty-five years ago does not matter, for in these words are the seeds of every persons experience. A MIRROR TO THE SUN (C) 1992, 1998 K.H. Finton Is it the ghost of him I see in the restless dreamscapes of a hollow night? The ghost of him ... or my own flawed impressions? Twenty years ago my world quaked violently when he passed so suddenly from our lives, so quickly there was barely time for tears. A sudden shock ... a stunning loss ... and life moved on without him. With childhood’s end, the world could never be the same. Twenty years ... so long ago I barely recognize that younger, wandering self. Yet, in those silent dreamscapes of the night he comes to visit still. A near-sighted old neighbor said he saw him walking through the tall grasses of the abandoned yard years after we left the old Ohio homestead. “Bunk,” I said, not prone to thoughts of spirits, yet encounters of a kind have occurred in the darkness of many a restless night since. I remember those long evenings in the family home, the easy chair whose arms held up a crude wood shelf, flowing over with papers and notes, my father seated behind this rude table in his work suit, lost from the present in the remote past of other peoples lives. The black and white TV that connected us with the world blared endlessly, while mother ironed the clothes and I shook my head in wonder. How bored I liked to be on those hot and muggy summer days when Dad’s idea of a good time was to walk through silent graveyards, writing the names from time-worn stones on yellow legal pads. Yet, caught up in his enthusiasm, I learned to hold a mirror to the sun, reflecting shadows upon those faded letters. Quite often we were rewarded with a touch of heartfelt sentiment inscribed upon the crumbling stone. Often Saturday would find us in some distant library, digging through piles of dry old books of facts that smelled of yesteryear, but all was not studious and dull escape. All was not the dark, outmoded past, as I feared in the leafy green and anxious days of youth... the family trips brought new, inviting places we ran to once a year ... croquet with friends in the evening breezes of the green Ohio grass ... Is it the ghost of him I see in the restless dreamscapes of a hollow night? The ghost of him ... or my own flawed impressions? His choice in music bubbles through my mind. His choice in pastime rumbles through my mature years like the distant drone of a passing freight. Through the years I’ve come to know him more than yesterday, when I was but his child. And most of all, I learned to hold a mirror to the sun. Kenneth Harper Finton Editor/ Publisher THE PLANTAGENET CONNECTION
