    3. I have just been working away. My last aunt on my mother's side just sent me several of my grandmother's papers. They have filled in a lot of facts and holes for me on many of my family lines. I now have Meason, Ryan, David, Sherman, Chase, and Coldiron back to their first appearance in America. Even better, I have a few stories reported by the children (100 years ago) of the people who lived the experiences. It is all making my family history a lot richer. My USA Chase line runs Wm, Wm, Wm, Nathaniel, Barnabus, Abner ... I would love to hear from others. Never met anyone who follows the Nathaniel branches. 3. John Chase and Elizabeth Baker had a number of children, one of which was William, who was my ancestor. He also had an older brother named Thomas b 20 Aug 1679 at Yarmouth, Barnstable, MA, who married Sarah Gowell, my date says 1726, but that sounds suspect. 2. Re: the posting by Tuba4: I thought that this issue had been long ago settled, but... No matter how much many folks might like it to be otherwise, there is absolutely no, I repeat no, documentary evidence to support the pure speculation that Aquila & Martha Jelliman Chase had a son William. (Or Thomas, for that matter.) If anyone has any evidence (verifiable original source document citations) to the contrary, there are just a whole lot of serious genealogists who would very very much like to see it. Dick Chase

    3. Leslie and List, Thanks to some very diligent Chase researchers (foremost, Lonnie Chase), I have the following information regarding the genealogy of Aquila Chase. Good luck with your search. Teri Popp Information obtained from Pedigree Charts compiled by Joanna Baxter Curtis and on file Yates Publishing, PO Box 67, Greenville, MT 59870. Referred to in the will of Aquila Chase, Sr. See also "Seven Generations of the descendants of Aquila and Thomas Chase," Chase and Chamberlain pp. 33-34. Information obtained from Pedigree Charts compiled by Joanna Baxter Curtis and on file Yates Publishing, PO Box 67, Stevensville, MT 59870. Referred to in the will of Aquila Chase, Sr. See also "Seven Generations of the descendants of Aquila and Thomas Chase," Chase and Chamberlain pp. 33-34. See also the following information regarding the parentage of this Aquila Chase: The following information is from the book "Seven generations of the descendants of Aquila and Thomas Chase". Compiled by John Carroll Chase and George Walter Chamberlain and supplied by Lonnie Chase. Page 9: "It was assumed , or claimed, that the brothers Aquila and Thomas Chase were sons of the Aquila Chase who was baptized in Chesham, 7 Aug. 1580. The facts studied at close range show that the assumption is not correct. Extensive research shows that the above named Aquila Chase went from Chesham to London, there married Martha Jelliman, was the father of six children, was a merchant tailor, lived on Knight Rider's street, attended the two established churches on that street and, with his wife and five of his children, was there buried. The parish registers fail to show that he had a son Thomas but they do show that he had a son Aquila who was baptized in the parish of St. Nicholas, Cole Abbey. The parish register further shows that Aquila Chase, the tailor, and Aquila his son, there baptized, were also buried there. As there was only one Chase family on Knight Rider's street, 1606 to 1660, we feel justified in assuming that Aquila and Thomas Chase, the Hampton brothers, could not be the sons of Aquila Chase of Chesham, England. They may be descended from the Chesham family but our researches fail to show such a connection". Page 39.: "John Chase married [1] in Newbury, 23 May 1677, Elizabeth Bingley, daughter of William and Elizabeth [Preston] Bingley, born in Salisbury, 24 June 1660; died about 1685. He married [2] in Salisbury, 21 Dec. 1687, Lydia Challis, daughter of Philip and Mary [Sargent] Challis. She was born in Salisbury, 31 May 1665; living 22 Oct. 1730". The book has a copy of Aquila's [1618 - 1670] will and the inventory of his estate and some interesting things about John's life and a copy of his will. The following information taken from the Chase family website: Date: Tue, 19 May 1998 19:24:52 EDT From: RAChase <RAChase@aol.com> To: CHASE-L@rootsweb.com Message-ID: <89560f4.356214c5@aol.com> Subject: [CHASE-L] Aquila Chase Content-type: text/plain; charset=US-ASCII Content-transfer-encoding: 7bit There is disagreement among published Chase genealogies about the lineage of the brothers Aquila and Thomas Chase who arrived in Hampton NH in 1639, and subsequently located in Newbury (now Newburyport) MA. The Chase Family History by J.M. Seaver (1929) lists the Aquila Chase born in Chesham in 1580 as the one which came to Hampton NH in 1639. This is clearly in error, since it is refuted by a recorded court deposition filed by Aquila in Ipswich Mass. in 1666 wherein he gives his age as 48, making the year of his birth about 1618 ("Decendants of Aquila and Thomas Chase"; John Chase & Geo. Chamberlain, 1928). The Chase/Chamberlain genealogy assumes that the Chesham Aquila (b. 1580) is the Aquila Chaste (in later records written as Chase) who is listed in Parish records in London as marrying a Martha Jelliman on 22 June 1606, and who had a number of children whose baptisms are recorded there. Among them was a son Aquila who was bp. 9 April 1626 (his burial there in the year 1659/60 is also recorded). There is no record of a son Thomas. Chase/Chamberlain therefore break the Chase genealogy between the Chesham Chases, and the brothers Aquila and Thomas in Hampton, since no factual documentation of the linkage apparently could be found. Any information (hopefully in the form of documented references) that anyone can provide on the parents, birth, and early life of the Newbury MA Aquilla and Thomas will be most welcome. Dick Chase Many recent Chase family compilers list the Aquila and Thomas who came to New Hampshire as children of the senior Aquila Chase of Chesham (b. 1580, son of Richard and Joan Chase) and Martha Jelliman, married 22 June 1606. Presently available evidence suggests that this is in error. If the Chesham Aquila is indeed the Aquila listed in the London records, then it seems unlikely that he could be the father of the brothers Aquila and Thomas; if he is their father, then the Aquila listed in London must be a different one, and Martha Jelliman cannot be his spouse and their mother. Regarding the spelling of the name "Aquila," the early "Vital Records of Newbury, Massachusetts" show the births of Aquila Chase, Aquilla Chase and Aquilla Chace.

    2. Hi, Brenda - "Dean" is definitely a bestowed name, not a title for a churchman or an educator, yes? I ask because (1) I know that it's not uncommon for titles in recorded documents over the years to become confused with actual given names, and (2) I've actually never seen an inquiry for a Dean Chase before. Just curious. Sandy Chase

    3. I can answer part of your question. Barnabas the first married Sarah Remick 2 Oct 1692 at Eastham, Barnstable, MA. Their son Joshua Wixam married Elizabeth Chase 18 Dec 1731. She was his second wife. The first wife was Hannah Baker m.9 Mar 1714 by whom he had 4 children Reuben, Daniel, David, and Hannah. The second marriage was the one with the children in my other post. Understandably, I think, since I am descended from Elizabeth's son Barnabas II. I know nothing about any O'Kelley. The original research was done by my mother, who was a very careful researcher and was descended from the Wixon family on her mother's mother's side. I do not have her research notes. My sister-in-law has them, as she is a professional researcher. I only collaborate with her and do my best to make contacts on line. As far as Elizabeth Chase is concerned, her father was William b.8 Jul 1688 at Yarmouth, MA. He married Dorcas Baker 20 sep 1715 at Yarmouth. His father was John b. 16 Apr 1649 at Yarmouth, MA m. Elizabeth Baker 1674/75. Yes, the Baker family seems to have been very close to both the Wixon/Wixam family and the Chase family. I am seconding this to both the Wixon and Chase Mailing lists in hope that there will be someone who can answer your question more fully. As far as Elizabeth being married to Stephen O'Kelley, I think this is a misprint as she was in the middle of a marriage to Joshua Wixam at the time. There is a child (Barnabas II) listed in Jan 1740 and another (Sarah) in Jan 1743. Always assuming that the dates are correct. 2. In reply to Jackson Anderson: I, too, am connected to your CHASE line. I descend from Abner Chase and Amy Scott through their daughter Cylinda. Amy Scott and most of her children emigrated to Salt Lake City after the death of Abner. Cylinda had married George Washington Goodell and moved to Michigan by way of LeRoy New York. Most of the information I have found on the internet had her incorrectly married to a man named Bigler. I have often wondered about the story involved in this emigration. I have received some information which led me to believe that the earlier Chases were Quakers. Judy Walgren

    3. I have some very contradictory information on Aquila Chase, who married Ann Wheeler. For instance, I have his birthdate as 9 Apr 1626 At Hundrich Parish, B. Chesham, England and also his christening date as 9 Apr 1626 at St. Nicholas, Chesham, B. England. Is this a contradiction or not? His death date, I have as 27 Dec 1670 at Newbury , Essex, MA and his burial date as 29 Aug 1670 at Oldtown Cem., Newbury, E, MA. As you see, I have him buried before he died! An impossiblity. Can anyone clear this one up for me? Does anyone have a marriage date for Aquila and Ann? All I have is about 1644 at Newbury, Essex, MA. I am descended from Aquila's son John and his second wife Lydia Challis thru their son Jacob. Does anyone have a definite birthdate for him and where should I look to find it? The information I have is from the Family History Center and is obviously in error. His birthdate is given as 1690, his death date as 1754, that's good, but the marriage date is given as to Elizabeth Bond 23 May 1677. Another imposiblity. Who did he marry and when? Does anyone know? I hope someone can resolve my problems as the frustration is getting to me!
