I find that very interesting as I don't have a listing of a Sarah as a child of those two. Can you supply me with dates and sources? Leslie Quist Tuba4@aol.com wrote: > In a message dated 99-05-12 13:59:51 EDT, mamakitty@ewa.net writes: > > << In both cases the parents of Stephen O'Kelley > > are listed as Joseph and Tabitha(Baker)O'Kelley. >> > This Joseph O'Kelley was the son of Jeremiah O'Kelley and Sarah CHASE. > Sarah was the daughter of John Chase and Elizabeth Baker. > Interesting connection, don't you think?
Just noted that due to a "senior moment" (you younger folks will someday understand just what one of those is) I miswrote "William" in the first sentence, when it obviously should be "Thomas". My apologies. Dick Chase
While I have seen references to several documents that support the supposition that William probably made his living (at least for a time) as a "mariner" in the coastal trade from the Hampton NH area, and that Aquila did "goe to sea and do service in the towne (of Newbury, MA) with a boate for four years", and is reputed by legend to have been the first pilot to bring a sailing ship across the bar at the mouth of the Merrimac River, I have not run across anything that suggested they ever did sail together. From the items listed in Aquila's will, it would appear that he was more of a farmer, at least in his later years. The reference to their origin in Cornwall, England, is, of course, part of one of the several Aquila legends that is unsupported by any verifiable documentation either in England or America. It was the ship Mary and John, (John and Mary ??) by the way, that apparently brought the Wheeler family (including their daughter, Ann, Aquila's future wife) to the Colony from England in 1634. In John's posting, the penultimate sentence is a bit puzzling, and I wonder if the word "not" was dropped and it should read "...and this ancestry does NOT connect to the early planters." (Assuming that "this ancestry" and "early planters" are referring to Aquila/Thomas and the Chesham Chase line, respectively--or vice versa. It is a little unclear. But in interpret the writer's intent from the last sentence to mean that the alleged connection is erroneous.) Dick Chase
Hi Im trying to find the Father Of of My GGgrandfather William Johnston Chase B 1849 in NY and D 1901 in Belemond Iowa He was Married to Mehetable (Hettie) E Sands ...... The only thing I have on his Father is from an elderly Relitive (which is Wm Granddaughter )That his Father Was Dudley Chase and that is all I have can someone please help me Thanks David Ps I have been doing my Family research for over 10 yrs now and I love every min of it
Can anyone add anything to this. Not sure but believe the source is; SEARCH FOR PASSENGERS OF THE JOHN AND MARY 1630 Vol 22 Pt 4 Aquila Chase 1618-1670 of Newbury, MA and Thomas Chase of Hampton,New Hampshire.. "Savage (1:364) says he was a mariner from Cornwall and he was in Hampton, NH 1640, brother of Thomas. Maine (p138)says he came to Hampton, NH in 1639 and he and his brother "coasted" between Boston and Newbury. The Chase English Ancestry has not been found despite extensive searching in England in the past. In 1846 there was a widely circulated story about a large fortune in England belonging to the Chase heirs in America. In that year a meeting was held in Newburyyport, MA.,attended by 1,500 people, and they collected a large sum of money to pursue the fortune, but it ended up to be a fraud. There have been claims that Aquila and Thomas Chase were sons of Aquila Chase, bpt 7 Aug. 1580, Chesham, Bucks. This family is well documented back to 1520 in Chesham in SEVEN GENERATIONS OF THE DESCENDANTS OF AQUILA AND THOMAS CHASE, by John Carroll Chase and George Walter Chamberlain, 1928, but this ancestry does connect to the early planters. A later book, CHASE-SEELY FAMILY, by Mary Henrietta Chase, 1962, published this erroneous ancestry."
I tried to run the basis for this Aquila story down a year or so ago, and could find nothing factual that would offer even a hint of support for it. Couldn't find anyone else who had heard the story that had ever come across anything that might give it credibility. Among other problems with the story is the recorded fact that "Old father Chase of Hundrick" (as Thomas, father of Richard, was known) was buried in the Chesham Parish in 1586, and there are also Parish records of him having several children after 1544, so if there was, in fact, a Thomas Chase who served King Henry (and who died in 1544) it was not this one. Given that part of the story is erroneous, there is little reason to give any credibility to the rest of it--especially since there is no evidence to support it. Dick Chase
My favorite single source is this one: SOME OF THE DESCENDANTS OF WILLIAM CHASE OF ROXBURY AND YARMOUTH, MASS. Compiled by George Walter Chamberlain for John Carroll Chase, Hazen P. Chase, Holyoke, Mass.,1983 AN INTRODUCTION I publish this book on William Chase, the first Chase in America, in the hope that we his descendants may have a more perfect understanding from whence we came and thus a better idea of where we go. In this day when young people are struggling for identity, what better way to find it than to find where they have been. In 1928 John Carroll Chase and George Walter Chamberlain published The Descendants of Aquila and Thomas Chase. Five years later, Mr. Chamberlain compiled for Mr. Chase a like genealogy of William Chase. This record was then published in the New England Historical and Genealogical Registers for the years 1933 and 1934. It is now published with the New England Historic Genealogical Society's permission in book form as it was printed fifty y ears ago. I hope you can find your ancestor where the compiler left off and that you will continue your record on the pages left blank for that purpose. Holyoke, Massachusetts HAZEN P. CHASE 1 March 1983 I can't post the whole thing because it is copyrighted by the Family Tree Maker on-line library. But, I would be happy to send it to family who request it by e-mail. That complies with their copyright instructions. I have it in MS Word 97. It is a 550 Kb file. I could also provide it as a text file, but it may not be as pretty. It is William, not the Aquila, line.
