    1. [CHASE-L] LYDIA CHASE
    2. DC
    3. I am seeking today, any information that you may have on Lydia, who departed New York in the Revolutionary War migration, and landed in Saint John NB Canada in 1784. She came on the ship "Nancy"...she was listed as being part of # 49, which was a civilian militia company's designation ...she was all alone on that trip, and shown as all alone on arrival...She was a widow ..she got a land grant in Parrtown (which was incorporated into Saint John), and later she got a land grant in the Grand Lake area of New Brunswick. I have been through the Descendants of William Chase genealogy and nothing matches this Lydia. Can anyone add anything ? Thanks Derek Chase Saint John

    1. [CHASE-L] Problem

    3. Chasers, I am having to choose my words carefully to get this message to the list. Rootsweb server watches for alarmist messages about v-i-r-u-s-e-s and deletes them. That is because most of them are chain letters that people pass on without any real knowledge. In other words, they are like a disease all by themselves. However, this message is for a problem that may now be among us. On the 26th, I received a message with an attachment from Don Chase. Unbeknownst to him it contained an attachment that I clicked on without checking since it was from one of us. My v-checker was old and turned off! The file had an little movie of fireworks and said "Happy New Year 1999." I knew at once that Don and I had both been had. Afterward, I only sent two messages, one to Greg and one to Meg. Meg has already warned me that my file was not attached to my message. In its place, the Happy New Year disease carrier was attached. Luckily, she did not open it. I went out and bought new software, found the bug, and killed it. Since we who are after Chases often share files, we are all exposed. Don't follow my example. Keep your v-checkers up to date. All those to whom I sent the Chase report earlier should have no concern. All those hereafter should know I am running good protection now. And, Rootsweb will not accetp attachments, for our protection. 3. William Baker and Elizabeth Baker were both the children of Francis Baker and Isabel Twining. (Along with 7 other children) For more info on this family, go to http://members.aol.com/rachase/WebSite/chase.wbg/ I got my Baker, Twining information from Harry Hadaway who keeps this page. 3. Good Morning Dave Received your message. Kind of figured out the date was some kind of in-house error somewhere.. anyway, I've been following this line on the CHASE rootsweb list for awhile since I descend from them at least 3 different ways. You mentioned that William (1688) and his wife Dorcas Baker were cousins . I have Wm's mother as Elizabeth Baker and Dorcas' father as William Baker. Shall I assume they are sibs? Do you have any of this Baker line? I have yet to see it on-line. Any info appreciated. 3. Hi group, I have just returned after "running away from home" for a few days and noted Dick Chase's message of 5-12-99 in which the following appeared: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ The Aquila who was son of Richard (of Chesham) is clearly not the Aquila of Hampton & Newbury, MA. J. Montgomery Seaver makes this ludicrous linkage in his "Chase Family History", but he lacks credibility as a genealogist in more ways than just this. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ It reminded me of the article that was printed in the July - October 1930 issue of the Chase Chronicle, which follows: GENEALOGY TRACER ACCUSED OF FRAUD j.M. SEAVER, PRESIDENT OF SOCIETY, FACES CHARGES OF MISUSING MAILS IN SCHEME J. Montgomery Seaver, thirty seven, president of the American Historical-genealogical Society, Broad and Norris sts., was confronted with State and Federal charges today. George C. Baker, superintendent of mails at the postoffice announced a fraud order against Seaver's organization had been issued at Washington yesterday. At the same time Seaver was being held in $500 bail for court on charges growing out of a collision. Postoffice inspectors investigating the Historical Genealogical Society's activities reported he had arranged a plan for selling books purporting to give the records of various families back to the time of William the Conqueror. After the investigation Horace J. Donnelly, solicitor of the Postoffice Department at Washington, reported the plan to be "a scheme for obtaining money through the mails by means of false and fraudulent promises" Mr. Baker said the fraud order provides that all mail sent to the Society's office will be returned to senders stamped "Fraudulent: Mail to this address returned by order of the Postmaster General." The method of obtaining subscribers for the genealogical books was to obtain through telephone directories or other means, a list of persons having ordinary names and to write these persons urging them to buy a book for $10 showing their descent from royalty or nobility. Exploits of bearers of the name were described in the letter, Mr. Donnelly said, and there was a similarity in the achievements of the ancestors, no matter what name was given them. The solicitor declared that a "Battle Hymn of the ______ Family" was included with each book, the name of the individual solicited being printed in the blank space. The Philadelphia postoffice, the inspectors found, has been receiving 300 to 400 pieces of mail daily addressed to the society. The inspectors denied Seaver lived up to a promise to refund money if the genealogical books were returned as unsatisfactory. Lonnie Chase chase1858@bwn.net

    1. [CHASE-L] William Chase and family
    2. John and Susan Brown
    3. Hello! Over the past couple of weeks, there have been several postings that make mention of the various members of the family of William Chase of Yarmouth. I have some questions about some of the information that has been given. 1. Just to repeat what someone said in an earlier message about the relationship between William Chase and the brothers Aquila and Thomas Chase - I've never seen any evidence of any connection between the two families. 2. At the Chase family site, the entry for William Chase lists ancestors going back a few generations. Does anyone know if this information is backed up with reliable sources? 3. Several postings have mentioned that William's wife was Mary Townley. In the series "Some of the Descendants of William Chase of Roxbury and Yarmouth" that appeared in NEHGR in 1933/34, William's wife is given as Mary, but with no last name. Has information come to light since that series that proves Mary's last name was Townley? 4. Some messages have given the wife of the William Chase Jr. (son the aforementioned William and Mary) as Elizabeth Holder. In that series of articles in NEHGR, the author specifically gives evidence that Elizabeth Holder could not have been the wife of William Jr. The author states, "It has been said that he (William) had four children by each wife, and that his second wife was Elizabeth Holder. One Christopher Holder of Olveston, co. Gloucester, England, came to Boston in 1656, but, since he espoused the views of the Quakers, he was banished in 1659 and fled to Newport, R.I. He married, 12 Aug. 1660, Mary Scott. Among his nine children born at Newport was Elizabeth Holder, born 4 Jan. 1664/5, who, when William Chase died, would have been barely twenty years of age. As it has been claimed that the four youngest children of William Chase were born of his second wife, and as the eldest of these four children sold land in Harwich in 1695 and therefore must have been born as early as 1674, when Elizabeth Holder was only about ten years old, it is impossible for her to have been the second wife of William Chase. No other Holder family has been found in New England before 1700." Again, has there been information uncovered since that article that counters the author's argument against Elizabeth Holder being the wife of William Chase, Jr.? Thanks for any clarification of these questions. John

    1. [CHASE-L] Nathan son of Benjamin?
    2. TOM POLLARD
    3. HI, I could use the help of Chase researchers who are more familiar than I in matters of Chase history. We have as an ancestor a Nathan Chase b. 1785 - d.-1847. He married Betsey Harger b. 1787-d. 1858. They were married in Martinsburg, Lewis Co., NY in 1808. They lived in Lowville, Lewis Co., and Wilna, Jefferson Co..Nathan lived in Lowville at the same time as Reuben Chase who, I have been told, was the son of Benjamin Chase b. 1747 Bristol Ma. I have seen a family tree that lists both Nathan and Reuben as sons of Benjamin. We believe our Nathan is the brother of Reuben and also the son of Benjamin, but lack anything conclusive to prove it. Is there anyone out there that can confirm this scenerio or at least point me in the right direction for further data. Many thanks, Tom Pollard.
