He did not contribute of the change of Chase to Chace. I donot know if he remained a Tory, but he probably had to living in Canada. However, he sure opened the flood gates of Chases....12 children. Two of those children; James P. had 6; Seth, who married Mary Puddington had 12 children; Daniel had 5; and James had 11. ( Thats like 34 grandchildren...and there could have been more. Must have been cold in New Brunswick. Just as in my side of the family, the Chase men liked Chase women. Sarah, daughter of Daniel married first cousin, Henry D Chase. James P married Phebe Chase and Mehitable married James Chase. Where do you live? I sure enjoy reading your information. I hope you will come by and visit. http://home.wanadoo.nl/j.b.chace I have added a new Chace and Cornell Family Letters section which contains letters from Thomas Chace and from Elijah Cornell Chace, the builder of the house about which I have recently posted to this list. The section will grow as I have time to transcribe more of the letters. I have made a MAJOR addition to the Genealogical contents of my site and added 14 Cornell-Chace/Chase Marriages. In researching the Genealogy of the Cornell Family available online at Cornell University, I looked for every mention of Cornell marriages to Chace/Chase family members, recorded the complete Cornell Descendancies for each marriage, and have listed these at my site Along with that, I recorded what marriage information was available from the Genealogy or from what I could find on the web. In addition, the complete Descendancy of each Chace/Chase marriage partner has been listed, if known. You may be able to find some information to help you break down your own brick walls. And, finally, I have added a link to Nathaniel Hawthorne's book The Whole History of Grandfather's Chair or True Stories From New England History, 1620-1808. This book can be found in its entirety online and tells the story of a chair brought to America by Lady Arbella with the Winthrop Fleet. The chair then travels through early American history and encounters many notable American's. There is also information about the Quakers as well as the Salem Witch Trials. I find it fascinating reading. Hope you'll come by and sign the guestbook. Jim, Thanks a million for the pictures of the Elijah Cornell Chase House. I have posted them along with information about the house at my website. To find it, go to http://home.wanadoo.nl/j.b.chace choose "Chace and Cornell Family Letters" and then select "Letters of Elijah Cornell Chace." There you will find information about the house, a link to the photos that you sent me, and a letter at the bottom of the page which may be a record of the building of the house. If the house in the letter is the same as the current structure, then the Elijah Cornell Chase House was built in the spring of 1866 and not in 1869. Cheers and Thanks! Yes, Jeffery, I know exactly what you mean about visiting old Chace homes.. Last summer I spent three weeks researching my father's side (Reeder) but managed to sneak off for three days to visit some of my Chace roots after they left Freetrown, MA. In this case it was my Captain Holder Chace who managed to leave there and take up residence just east of Cleveland in an area called Chardon and very close to Lake Erie. (He became a Captain of a ship on Lake Erie) I was lucky as one of my distant Hathaway cousins just happens to have been the main researcher in Geauga County for years and years. She is retired now but knows everything about the Chace and Hathaway past there. Well, I had thought for years I knew which house he lived in and a cousin who belongs to this very group had sent a picture of the house to me. I visited the house and even the lady who lived there thought that was HOlder Chace's house. (They were wrong. Can you believe it?) Then, after checking with my genius researcher cousin I learned that was a Hathaway house (not a Chace house)and was located only just down the street from the REAL CHACE HOUSE.. I then visited the real house and sure as your life there was a plaque beside the door CENTURY HOME BUILT 1834 BY HOLDER CHASE . (Chase was the wrong spelling of course) It was the highlight of my trip for sure to see the house and have an opportunity to see the inside where Holder had built a secret tiny room where he hid the escaped slaves who were on their way to Canada. The house and grounds are very beautiful. It turned out that there were several interesting and beautiful Chace as well as Hathaway houses that had been restored in the area. I was very proud of being a Chace descendant after having visited there. Also, of course Freetown and all around that area of Mass. there are many many restored homes they once lived in . Of course in Freetown it is just as though the whole town is being maintained for our Chace and Hathaway name--the streets, gardens, museums, and so much is named after them. In my case my grandfather Chace lived in a wonderful Victorian house he built in Stanton, Nebraska. It was a big rambling place with two Parlors, wonderful hardwood floors and a third floor where my mother had her art studio. After she graduated from college she spent several years painting in her studio while she waited for my father to finish Medical School. Nuff of that. Ginger
Dear All, Today I found a secret place. There is an internet game called Geocaching (www.geocaching.com) and it is basically like treasure hunting with GPS (Global Positioning Satellite). There are caches placed or found all over the country. The secret place I found on the web is in Kansas City (on the Kansas side), and is the oldest continuous residence in Johnson County, Kansas, built around 1869. The reason it is interesting to others is because of its age, the reason it is interesting to me is that the house was built by my Great Great Grandfather Thomas Chace's brother Elijah Cornell Chace. I lived in Kansas City for about 15 years and never once did I know that the house existed, let alone where it was. Now, I live on the other side of the planet and won't be back to KC anytime soon. I rely on the internet for a lot of the information I have found about my family - but I think there is a huge difference between a webpage or a piece of paper and a physical location in which one of your ancestors lived. Granted, the internet helped me discover that the house exists, but seeing it with my own eyes would be more rewarding. I have been at this genealogy pursuit nearly a year now and am pleased every time such a gem of information is found. I try to perform new and creative searches on search engines and every once in awhile come up with such a find. How many of you have similar stories - finding out that an ancestral home you knew nothing about is just on the other side of town? I would love to hear some of your experiences in finding the unknown and the hidden. I am looking to find information on Johanna Chase. She is one of my brick walls. All the info I have on her is that she was a widow who married my g-g-g-g-grandfather William Brown, and am trying to find out her maiden name. She had a daughter Susannah Chase born about 1756 and who mariied John Howland in 1774 in the Oblong. Johannah married William Brown( b 1734 in the U.S. and d 1813 in Ontario Canada) and had perhaps two sons David Brown b 1763 and William 21 Aug 1769. She is buried in Wolsford Rural Cemetery in Woslford Twp. Grenville Cty, Ontario Canada.sound familiar to anyone????????? Thanx Willow
MARY ANN CHASE was born about 1840 in ME. She married DANIEL T. TOWNSEND 10-25-1854 in Dixfield, Oxford, ME. Who were her parents? Where was she born? When and where did she die? Thank you
In response to Harriet's <<<Hey kids! Check out the Chases who got married in Illinois>>>, Lonnie said <<<Hey Harriet! Look how they messed up my GG grand parents in the Illinois marriage index.>>> I also have a "mixed up" story from the Illinois Marriage Records - a GGGrandmother, whose descendant married a Chace, was listed as Mary HEAD, not STROUD as many "cousins" had assured me was her name. Even the state has her listed as HEAD. I requested a copy of the marriage certificate from the State of Illinois to verify the correct name. I requested it under the name listed, HEAD. When I received it, a hand-written return from the local JP in 1845, I studied it, and sure enough, her name was STROUD. But, because this was an old, creased paper, and the name was found in the crease, the compiler recorded it as HEAD - what he/she saw. Mary STROUD does not exist in the state records! Because this branch of the family has promulgated a huge amount of misinformation on the Internet about the family origins, I simply refused to believe their contention that GGG Mary was a STROUD. I wasted a great deal of time spinning my wheels - and there was a HEAD family in that place at that time, which muddied the waters considerably. So, the moral of the story is to always view the original - or a copy of the original - if you can! Judy Chace Needham

I have so little on Sibbel ANTHONY that any clue is priceless. What I do have is the marriage record in Rehoboth, 4 Sep 1793, and birth records for Sibbel & Asa's children - all surnamed SMITH, all listed in the records of Dighton, Bristol Co., MA, but all entered on the same page as though at the same time: Salley, b. 6 Mar 1794 Asa [my 3x Great Grandfather], b. 5 Mar 1796, John, b. 26 Jun 1798 Polley, b. 10 Feb 1801, d. 22 Aug 1802 Polley, b. 10 Feb 1803 Seth, b. 1 Feb 1805 Patty, b. 10 Jan 1807 Jonathan Anthony, b. 11 Jan 1809 Lorane Ann, b. 10 Apr 1811 Are any of these names ones that seem to run in the CHASE families? There would be 16 years between the birth of Salley and that of Lorane Ann, so a 17 year gap for Abner & Sybil [CHASE] ANTHONY would be entirely possible. Between marriage age - say 18 - and menopause in the mid to late 40s, a woman has potentially 30 years during which she can bear children. My 3x Great Grandmother Julia Ann [CLARK] DUNHAM, had her first child at 19, in 1834, and her youngest, my 2x Great Grandfather, at age 44, in 1859. Well, there is a John D. Chase, an early LDS, in the "Mormon Battalion, was a Bishop somewhere in Utah. I think you can get a bio on him on lds.org, under resources. Lonnie, I think ,posted information about this particular John D. from the "Chronicles" In the early days, from what I understand, often names were submitted which had the same surname. That; it would seem to be the case in my case. As always the IGI, CAN help and as ALWAYS check other resources. Harriet Chase

If so, the John D CHASE would be a descendant relative that submitted the information for the ordinance work. Jackson Andersen Provo, UT IBSSG
Karen, Here is some info I found on Abner Anthony. You may already have some of this info but since you are working with CDs, perhaps you do not. I found it in the LDS database, online: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=search_all1. asp ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- 1. Abner ANTHONY - Ancestral File - Multi-generational pedigree Gender: M Birth/Christening: 11 Dec 1739 Swansea, Bristol, Mass Abner ANTHONY (AFN: PC2T-R3) Pedigree Sex: M Family Birth: 11 Dec 1739 Swansea, Bristol, Mass Parents: Father: Benjamin ANTHONY (AFN: 2S0Z-WC) Family Mother: Martha LUTHER (AFN: BX1Q-P1) ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- 2. CHASE Marriage: 25 Jun 1759 Swansea, Bristol, Massachusetts Parents: Relatives: John D. CHASE ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- ---- 3. Looks like Abner Anthony, and perhaps Sybil, moved to Rehoboth by 1777! The following Abner may just be a child born later in their life, or from a second marriage. While possible, I think their oldest son Asa at 17 was a little young to have a son, he would have to have married at 16. Wonder how old your Sibbel or Lilebell ANTHONY was who married Asa SMITH of Dighton, 4 Sep 1793? If 17-18, she could have been a slightly older sister of this Abner! I'm interested in whether they may have had a daughter or a granddaughter named Sybil, Sibbel, or Lilebell. I've been searching for the family of Sibbel or Lilebell ANTHONY who married Asa SMITH of Dighton, 4 Sep 1793, [Rehoboth Vital Records, Search & Research CD] and recently received the clue that she may have been the daughter of Abner & Sybil [CHASE] ANTHONY. I've checked the Search & Research Bristol Co. CD, but only a surname index of the Swansea records is included. I could find no mention of Abner ANTHONY in the archives for this mailing list or in the Rootsweb ANTHONY surname message board. There were several occurrences of Anthony & Sybil in the World Connect family trees, but only one, Jim Bullock's, gave any children - two sons Reuben & Asa. The one mention in Vol 87, a genealogy of the CHASE family, is the only reference to Abner ANTHONY in the Register and it does not follow the family to later generations. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you. "Our William Chase" - do you mean William Chase of Roxbury/Yarmouth? Middlesex County is/was a county contiguous to Western London - and in fact was absorbed by Greater London in 1965. Isleworth is nearby to Heathrow airport, and was one of the "Hundreds", or special taxation districts, of Middlesex. We do know that there was a Chase family in the London area round about this time - based on the assumption that the Aquila Chase and his brother Thomas who settled in Newburyport, MA were from there or Chesham. (Chesham is 28 miles from London.) There was a Chase family in this area at this time and many people have tried to link the New World Aquila Chase with that family. Perhaps this William Chase of the brass rubbing is a part of that other Chase family, or potentially an ancestor of Aquila and Thomas. But if you are looking for origins of William Chase of Roxbury and Yarmouth, Isleworth seems a bit far afield - too much to the West. I'm still betting on Essex County and the Wivenhoe environs, including Elmstead Market, based on old records there - and the research of Ginger, Keith and now Jeffrey, among others. Jeffrey Chace - have you found any new information for us? Judy Chace Needham -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Wednesday, April 24, 2002 7:39 AM To: [email protected] Subject: [CHASE-L] William Chase brass rubbing Hi, Did you know there is a brass rubbing in Middlesex County England of a WILLIAM CHASE? I discovered it when looking for ancestors names on brass rubbings. The web page listed hundreds of names of brass rubbings, but, alas, no pictures of them. The William Chase rubbing was dated 1544 which would have been after he died. I know this is too early for our William Chase, but it might be a clue as to his origins. The rubbing is located in the parish of Isleworth. Here's the address for the page. http://www.devon.gov.uk/library/locstudy/brasses.html Have fun, Sandra Davidson
