Found this recently on the website of the Chicago Public Library at http://www.chipublib.org/008subject/012special/chas.html Anyone related? Biographical Note Horace Gair Chase was born in Hopkinton, New Hampshire, July 9, 1827, one of three sons of probate judge Horace and Betsy (Blanchard) Chase. His mother died when he was young and his father remarried in June, 1844. At age sixteen he was apprenticed to the mathematical and nautical instrument store of Samuel S. Thaxter & Son in Boston, where he remained for over a year until his health failed. He appears to have boarded with the Cushing family at this time. Off duty hours found young Horace at the library, various church and temperance meetings, and occasionally at the theatre. His politics at this time were yet undecided and he attended Democrat and Whig meetings with equal enthusiasm. By his twentieth birthday, Horace was back in Hopkinton working as a cobbler. In 1852, Horace followed his brothers Samuel B. and Charles C. to Chicago, where he became employed by real estate dealer James H. Rees, who with Edward Rucker originated the land abstract system in Chicago. In 1855, Horace and Samuel Chase joined fortunes with James Rees to form Rees, Chase & Co. Eventually, Mr. Rees was bought out, and the firm became Chase Brothers & Co. Over the next decade and a half, the fortunes of the firm improved, and Horace settled at 864 Prairie Avenue, and in 1869 at 924 Prairie Avenue. This latter address is now the 1900 block of that street, a neighborhood described in Mayer and Wade's Chicago: Growth of a Metropolis as "the focus of fashionable living" in the 1860's. The Chase home was a block away from the Marshall Field mansion erected in 1874 and three blocks from the Philip Armour home. In 1870, brother Charles C. Chase joined Chase Brothers & Co.; the fourth partner being George H. Bailey, and the office located at 48 LaSalle Street. After the fire of 1871, in which the Cook County abstract records were destroyed, it was found that Chase Brothers & Co. and two other abstract firms (Shortall & Hoard and Jones & Seller) had each lost part of their indices, but together had a complete set, with some duplicates. The three firms therefore merged, and still later consolidated with Chicago Title and Trust. Immediately after the fire, Chase Brothers & Co. established its offices at 299 W. Washington Street. Horace maintained a separate loan business with John B. Adams as well. Horace G. Chase married in Chicago June 14, 1860, to Ellen Marian Sherwin. They became the parents of four children: Samuel M., Bessie L. B., Lucy B., and Horace Stanley. Charles C. Chase married in 1874 to Bel (d. 1883) and moved to Lake View, then a separate city. Samuel B. Chase also settled in Lake View. Both Horace and Marian survived into the twentieth century, and in their retirement years summered at Hopkinton, New Hampshire. In politics he was a Republican; the Chases belonged to the Reformed Episcopal Church. He was a member of the Masonic Order. Jeffrey Chace asked - see his email entitled "Last will and Testament of Thomas Chace, Sr" dated 22 May - if I (being a resident of Santa Monica in Los Angeles County - and working in Beverly Hills) knew anything about Alonzo, the listed executor of Thomas Chace, Sr's, will. Alonzo died August 12, 1927 in Beverly Hills, California. I'm sorry, I don't. However, there was/is a prominent Chace family in the area - Burton W. Chace. Burton was an important, and long-term, Supervisor of Los Angeles County. There is a wonderful park named after Burton Chace in Marina Del Rey. Supervisor Chace died (auto accident, I believe) 22 August 1972. The person to ask about him is Virginia Reeder as he was her second cousin. And, perhaps Ginger knows something about Alonzo and descendants......... If anyone is interested in Burton Chace, this bio is from the Long Beach Mayor's office where Burton Chace was mayor from 1947-1953. "Burton W. Chace (1947 1953) Burton Chace was born in 1900 (JCN note: according to CA records, birth was 6 July, 1901) in Stanton, Nebraska. He went through the Stanton school system and eventually graduated from the University of Nebraska. He drove all the way to Long Beach in 1923 with a college friend. After a few months, Chaces father came to California and together they engaged in a lumber business. After many years and several expansions, Burton Chace became the sole owner of the Chace Lumber Company. Throughout this time, he became heavily involved in civic affairs and served on the Board of Education from 1933 to 1941. In 1938 he was elected President of the Board of Education. Chace was elected to the City Council in 1945 and reelected in 1948" Judy Chace Needham
I just realised today that I have had suspect information on the welcome.html page of my website for a long time. No longer is Buckinghamshire given as the origin of Aquila and Thomas, and like William, are known now as only "from old Blighty." I have tried to rectify my error by directing new visitors to Poland. Hello, I have had the great privilege of receiving an email from the current owners of the Elijah Cornell Chase House giving historical information about the home. They have confirmed my inkling that the house mentioned in the letter of March 4, 1866, about which I posted earlier, was indeed on the same location as the current brick structure and became the kitchen of the house. Additionally (WOW!) they have emailed me a photo (circa 1895) of Elijah and his wife Abigail sitting around with their family outside the back of the old kitchen. The new brick house having been built in 1869 can also be seen. All of this can be found at my site and I have added a link "Photos of Elijah Cornell Chase House" to the navigation bar to make it easier to find. http://home.wanadoo.nl/j.b.chace Jeffrey Chace [email protected] My Chace website: http://home.wanadoo.nl/j.b.chace Search these emails: http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=CHASE Browse these emails: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/CHASE-L/

I"ve been doing some reseach into Acquilla. Some of the sources say ...and I believe it's been said on this list....that Acquilla Chase may not have originated in Chesham, Buckinghamshire. I was wondering if anyone has ever researched other English counties for a clue as to where he came from? And I'll tell you why...and about some theories I've come up with. I've done some reviewing of Dow's history of Hampton. My thinking was that sometimes if you take a step back and review the circumstances they were in...it gives you a bigger and broader picture. There were two original groups that settled in Hampton. The first settlement was lead by a Rev. Stephen Bachiler(sp) The second... that our Acquilla is supposed to maybe have come with was lead by Rev Timothy Dalton. I believe that he probably did come with Rev. Dalton ....and I'll go into some of the reasons why. If you review the history of the town and who some of these other people were...some interesting information comes up. It seems that Rev Bachiler, the original founder of Hampton, was a bit of a nefarious character in his day. He was run out of several parishes for being basically someone who liked to be contentious and stir the pot all the time. Not a good puritan. Rev. Dalton on the other hand was supposed to be more conservative in his views. Went with the politcal flow...kind of guy. He was actually the one with the greatest amount of support in the congregation. There was a lot of infighting and backbiting between the two groups. Charges were flung...people hauled before the magistrate who were known to sympathize with one group or the other. A lot of hard feelings. Acquilla was brought up on charges of "Picking Pease on the Sabbath." The men who brought him up on those charges....were William Sanborn....and William Fifield. William Sanborn was the grandson of Stephen Bachiler....and Willian Fifield sat in the same pew with him in church. Church seating was assigned. They sat according to "Dow's History" in second row on the west side of the meeting house. All male church members sat on the west side of the meeting house, but isn't it interesting however to note that they were together these two men....the ones that brought Acquilla up on charges....and who it was they were connected to. Acquilla was a freeholder and didn't belong to the church...but remember that to these settlers....these ministers weren't just ministers they were leaders in this small community. I think it makes a good case for Acquilla being in Daltons group when he came. Now to my question. Sources both on this list and in the "Seven Generations" list that Acquilla may not have come from Chesham in Buckinghamshire. Dow's History of Hampton states that the followers of Stephen Bachiler came promarily from Hampshire and Wiltshire. The Seven Generations says that Ann Wheeler came from Wiltshire. But Dow's History also states that the followers of Timothy Dalton came primarily from Norfolk and Suffolk counties in England. These are coastal areas.... and this would make sense ...given that we know Acquilla was mariner. Also, I did a surname search for these counties in England. No Chases turn up for Suffolk county....but the name does turn up for Norfolk. Has anyone ever reviewed parish records for Norfolk county in England? I don't want to waste my time on a wild goose chase...no pun intended....if someone has already thought of this before. Kathy Caslin [email protected]
Would the CHASE moderator please email me privately - I have a question and have lost track of this person due to several system crashes.... Thanks. Alice Mh Nv.
Hi All, I have just added the Last Will and Testament of Thomas Chace Sr. to my website if you are interested. What a fantastic genealogical source are wills. Thomas's will list all of his children and their locations. When my family decided to move from the safety of our ancient New England home, we sure spread out across the country. Washington D.C. is not so far away, but Kansas certainly is, South Dakota even farther, and California, clear on the other coast. Alonzo, the listed executor of the will, ended up in California. His wife Cordelia M. Wood, daughter of Benjamin and Mary B. Wood of Thompkins Co. New York, ended up dying on August 12, 1927, in Hollywood, California, of all places. And, Alonzo died March 23, 1930, in Beverly Hills, California (having changed the spelling of his name to Chase). Their children were Julia Forbes Chase (b. Dec. 17, 1863 in Dryden NY), Mary Wood Chase (b. January 1, 1868 in Brooklyn, NY), and Edith Emily Chase (b. January 21, 1870 in Ithaca NY). Anyone have anymore information about them? Especially, Alonzo? Maybe some of your Californians know something about them? (Judy Chace Needham, wink wink?) Jeffery had no trouble getting to wonderful web site. I have printed some of it but I'm off to the dog track. The proper way to get on and I urge all AOL users to do so is home.wanadoo.nl/j.b.chace. I urge my family to go for it. Colonel Chace (Add it your favorite places)
Hi All, Art informs me that if you use AOL (and I assume this is probably true for other providers as well) that the http:// is added automatically. So, if you try using the URL I posted in my messages, you may have trouble. In most web browsers, the http:// part is not necessary anyway. I just put it in so that most email programs will recognise it as a link so you can just click on it. Maybe that has been a problem for some. (Oh, and make sure you spell the j.b.chace part with a "c") :) Hope that helps - thanks Art! Hi All, This one is for the Aquila Chase descendants. Most of the time I post regarding William Chase and his descendants, but this list is for all Chases. I ran across a book on the web called, "LOVE'S ODYSSEY, THE LIFE OF THORNTON CHASE" by ROBERT H. STOCKMAN. It can be found at http://bahai-library.org/books/t.chase/ Thornton Chase's ancestory and genealogy is dealt with quite extensively and some of you may get some benefit from the information in finding your own Chase roots. I am glad of the fact that the thorny subject of Aquila's English roots is dealt with merely by saying, "APPARENTLY he came from Chesham, England. The date of his arrival in New England is unknown, but the records of the town meetings of Hampton, New Hampshire, on the Atlantic coast, indicate that he was granted land and settled there in 1640." There has been much said on this list about the lack of evidence for his origins being Chesham, so we can leave it at that. There are also two books by Thornton Chase about the Bahai religion online. Those of you descended from him may be interested. http://bahai-library.org/books/bahai.revelation.txt and http://bahai-library.org/books/galilee.html Cheers, Jeffrey Chace [email protected] My Chace website: http://home.wanadoo.nl/j.b.chace Search these emails: http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=CHASE Browse these emails: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/CHASE-L/
Colonel Chace, Thanks for your reply. At first, when I read your email and you said that "for some reason [you] can't get into my website," I thought you meant that you didn't find much there that was interesting. But the last sentences of your email informed me that you mean you were having technical difficulties getting into it! :) I appreciate all of the additional information about James P. Chase. Where have you been able to find all of that information? I was wondering as well, who was George Bedford Chase's father? I am assuming that he descends from Benjamin, son of William, the Elder, as do most Canadian Chases? I do not know what difficulty you may have had getting into my website, I checked the link in the email I sent and it appears to be valid. Maybe you just had a bad connection with your server or maybe my server was having problems at the time. http://home.wanadoo.nl/j.b.chace You asked where I live. I live in Europe, in the Netherlands, and have been here for about four and a half years now - hence the .nl extension on my email address and my website address. Like you and your family, my Chaces are military and my father was a B-52 Captain in the Air Force and flew in Vietnam. My brother is a 2nd Lt. in the Army and is a Chinook Helicopter pilot. Currently, he is stationed in Afganistan. I worry about him a lot, but he can take care of himself. Hope to hear more from you and that you will be able to access my website. Jeffrey, As I mentioned in my previous message---the Shermans are so easy to research as they are connected to so many famous people. You have an advantage over all of us as their origins are in Dedham===and they claim Yaxley, England. When you go to JWivenhoe you are only a very short distance away from Wivenhoe as you well know and it would be a shame to miss it as you have such beauty to see there. Also, the Parish Church in Dedham is worth a visit as the Shermans have dedicated in the Sherman name there. Yaxley is interesting too, but I would suggest you contact the Sherman Group on Internet as they have absolutely extensive information on the family and where we connect and where everyone connects. It is very very interesting to study this name as they married into so many famous families. I gave mounds of information about them in my Chase/ce book and still have loads of information about them. As I mentioned before Michael Wood of London was writing them often for the New England Genea. Monthly magazine. He is the person I suggested you try to see if you should get back to London. The Genealogy Society is where he used to do research for people and he stems from the Woods in Dedham himself. Ginger in AZ
Hi Keith, [email protected] aol.com is MY adress NOT Art COHAN'S. I'm afraid that I can't help the Sherman researchers. Perhaps he will post his address. Art HOLMES
Art Cohan, who I believe is a member of this Group is the best person to contact at [email protected] As most of you will know the Sherman group very active. Art has a MASSIVE amount of information on them. Also, once again I refer you to "Ginger" Reeder and her book on the CHASE family. She has compiled an excellent section on the Shermans, Keith ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeffrey Chace" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, May 20, 2002 2:21 AM Subject: [CHASE-L] Sherman-Chace/Chase? > Ok, > > Who is going to tackle the Sherman-Chace/Chase family tree in order to give > us a ready overview of those relationships? > > The Tripp Family also seems to have been significant for the early > Chace/Chases. > > Jeffrey Chace > [email protected] > > My Chace website: http://home.wanadoo.nl/j.b.chace > Search these emails: > http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=CHASE > Browse these emails: http://archiver.rootsweb.com/CHASE-L/ > >

Hello All, Major construction has gone on at my website lately and that is one of the reasons that you have not heard much from me. I hope you will come by and visit. http://home.wanadoo.nl/j.b.chace I have added a new Chace and Cornell Family Letters section which contains letters from Thomas Chace and from Elijah Cornell Chace, the builder of the house about which I have recently posted to this list. The section will grow as I have time to transcribe more of the letters. I have made a MAJOR addition to the Genealogical contents of my site and added 14 Cornell-Chace/Chase Marriages. In researching the Genealogy of the Cornell Family available online at Cornell University, I looked for every mention of Cornell marriages to Chace/Chase family members, recorded the complete Cornell Descendancies for each marriage, and have listed these at my site Along with that, I recorded what marriage information was available from the Genealogy or from what I could find on the web. In addition, the complete Descendancy of each Chace/Chase marriage partner has been listed, if known. You may be able to find some information to help you break down your own brick walls. And, finally, I have added a link to Nathaniel Hawthorne's book The Whole History of Grandfather's Chair or True Stories From New England History, 1620-1808. This book can be found in its entirety online and tells the story of a chair brought to America by Lady Arbella with the Winthrop Fleet. The chair then travels through early American history and encounters many notable American's. There is also information about the Quakers as well as the Salem Witch Trials. I find it fascinating reading. Hope you'll come by and sign the guestbook.
