Hello Ginger, Good to hear from you. I had dinner with Keith Hume and his wife Iris last week. We engaged in some great conversation and I really enjoyed myself. I hope someday to get to Providence. I imagine I will plan a New England Adventure sometime soon to do some research and to see what it is like there. From Salem, Massachusetts, to Providence, Rhode Island, is not so far really. And from there, it's not particularly far to D.C. to take a look at the Banks Manuscripts at the Library of Congress. While I am in Providence, I will call on the Sherman Family as well of course. :) Cheers, Jeffrey Chace > > > This was a welcome remark from Jeffrey. While researching my Rose line in the 1880 Wayne County, NC census I found a Burket Rose in the Nahunta Township in household 316 and Ruffin Rose in Nahunta Township in household 317. Ruffin Rose was in the household with some others with the last name of Chase. One of the Chase womens occupation was listed as a prostitute. It list daughters for Ruffin and for the Chase woman but list no wife for him or husband for her. Was this comman to list such a thing or am I reading this wrong or what? Anyway I cannot find these Rose men in earlier census records and was wondering if anyone may have any information on them as to where they were before then. If anyone has any information on any of these people I would greatly appreciate hearing from you. I may be contacted directly at [email protected] Thanks, Chris
This was a welcome remark from Jeffrey. Since you mentioned Providence perhaps one of you has visited the City Hall (I believe that is right) where they keep information on Philip Sherman (the connection through our Chaces and Benjamin son of William. When we visited Providence we didn't have time to go there and I have always been sorry. Perhaps someone can share. Ginger in AZ
Hello All, I was wondering if there may be some Chaces who lurk here on this list. I am a Chace and interested in the history of Providence, particularly between 1680 and 1850. You see, my Chaces were in and about Swansea, Providence, Fall River, and the rest, since the early days and I am fascinated to learn more about this area and the eras of American history here experienced. I have found some mid-1800s Providence directories on the internet, and have listed the links thereto below. They record among many others the existence of my GGGGrandpa and his brothers there. At my website, I have merely made available the copies of these directories that contain Chaces and Chases. However, any of you who have relatives in Providence at this time can find links to all pages of these directories there as well: http://home.wanadoo.nl/j.b.chace Or you may simply find to them below: http://www.netris.org/RIToolmakers/1836-37ProvDir/1836-37ProvDirMain.html http://www.rootsweb.com/~rigenweb/1844prov.html If you choose to link through my Chace Website, look for the Providence Directories link on the left frame of the site. Thereafter, choose the appropriate link (1836/37 or 1844) and you may be able to find some of your Providence ancestors of that time there. Hope you have fun. You can find names, adresses and occupations for the entries. For example, modern-day, sprightly, Bocephus Metcalf may choose to attest to the following after having searched the directories: "I never knew that ggggrandpa 'Metcalf Jesse, tanner and currier, cor. Charles and Mill,' lived in Providence while he tanned and curried. Curious. He seemed to have lived in 'Charles and Mill.'" I know. He's not MY ggggrandpa, of course. I'm a Chace. My GGGGrandfather, Thomas Chace, is listed as an "overseer" and later a "yeoman," lived in "Dean" and is found in both directories along with many Chaces and a few Chases. But, I think you see what I mean? Are there any Chaces out there on this list who do not subscribe to [email protected] ? Hope all of you can benefit from these three links for Providence above. You are of course welcome to come by my website and visit and sign the guestbook. Hi Ginger, Glad to hear you like my ramblings, as I sometimes feel they are.....! I agree that this is probably why the list has lasted. Everyone is sooooo helpful and I just hope.that I can be of some help to others too. Have given the list address to several people who need help, that I found on the message boards, and didn't know this list existed. I think it does make us feel like family ...as we are.... and it is certain to help others, since there are soooo many branches of the Chases/Chaces. I really enjoy reading the posts too...........! Thanks so much for the tip on the Cape Cod book. I will have to get it. As for the many marriages. Yes, I know that this was the reason for them.......usually it was the women who died young.........often after childbirth, but it is somewhat surprising to me that I have 2 women, both m. to Benjs. that had been previously m. several times. I am actually wondering if Mehitable was REALLY m. 3 x befor Benj. Chase5), cause.....there just didn't seem like enough time span, but...who knows. More mystery.......! It sure makes it interesting, but more complicated........!!!!!!! One thing I think I should do is go back to the Woods and I wish I could find the Wood's 1st name (might be Henry) fr. England---know I have it somewhere amid the mass of papers, and then take a look at that genealogy..........and see how.it ties in. So much work...so little time..........! Oh, by the way, did you send some info in another email........cause I received another one from you only a few minutes apart........but there was nothing there..............! Thanks again, Barb PS Guess I'll send this to the list as someone else like perhaps Jeffrey who has the same ties has some info or ideas on all this. By the way, Keith and Jeff...hope you had a nice time last weekend. Anything to report to us?????? -- Original Message ----- From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Sent: Thursday, June 06, 2002 9:48 AM Subject: Re: [CHASE-L] Chase Book email re Wood,Chase,Cornell Hi, Enjoyed your comments. I like your personal comments. That is one reason why this group has lasted as long as it has. Keith always answered everyone with personal comments making it feel like one huge family---as we are. Jeffery is doing the same thing. I don't think people went in and out of marriages as they do today. The real reason then was the women often died in child birth or other ailments and the husbands had to find either a housekeeper or another wife to take care of all the mucho kids in the family. That's my opinion at least. My suggestion to you is to order the William Chase of Cape Cod Book from the New England Genealogy Society in Boston. It isn't expensive but it does cover those early Cape Cod and Mass. families so that you can connect them up. Ginger in AZ

PUBLISHERS' PREFACE TO THE REVISED EDITION. _______ Nearly every one in the land has heard of Dr. Chase's Book of Recipes. It is almost as standard as the Dictionary, and an indispensable possession of every well governed household, kept in a convenient place for ready reference. As it embraces al- most everything in the way of useful information and is written in plain language and systematically arranged, it has become the most highly valued, book designed for general use. Young and old consult it, and rich and poor, educated and uneducated persons of all vocations and walks in life make almost daily use of it for various purposes. On the farm this book is an authority, and from Maine to California and from Oregon to Florida it is quoted and its direc- tions followed. So true is its information and so wide is its scope that it serves every purpose of a library to many who cannot afford to invest money in various technical books. By the mechanic, Dr. Chase's Book of Recipes has long been held in the highest favor. It is a common thing to find it on the shelf or on the desk or on the closet shelf of the carpenter or blacksmith or other skilled workman. Such men refer to it for the information they so often need to help them in some perplexing problem of their trade. In the kitchen it is usually a well-worn book, depended upon as a guide in cooking and cleaning and other various household duties. No cook book or household guide was ever devised that has had such a sale as this one; and no other book has been so universally adopted and has so long held the confidence of housewives. Cook books come and cook books go, but Dr. Chase's book stays on forever. When an emergency arises it is always "Go get Dr. Chase's book," or "See what Dr. Chase's book says to do." It is a sort of all-wise counselor in times of trouble, filled with just such advice as is most needed. As a family medical guide, Dr. Chase's Book of Recipes is famous; and its fame extends almost everywhere. Families have for many years depended upon it to prevent disease and save doctors' bills, and many of the most prominent physicians in communities frequently consult it for suggestions to aid them in their practice. If there were no other departments in this most excellent book, the medical department alone would place it among the most useful and valuable household works. The descriptions of diseases and their symptoms and the direc- tions given are so plain and simple that anyone can under- 1 Lonnie Chase [email protected]
Hi all, Forgot to put the BIG REASON I am sooo intereted in Mehitable Thurston and her husbands. Cause she had supposdly been m. 3 times before marrying Benj Chase5), she lst m. Coggeshall (? spelling), then m. Daniel Wood, then ???, if she actually m. again..........meaning before she m. Benj.Chase5), I am interested BECAUSE their son Benj Jr. 6) & 1st wife Phebe Barnard Macy Chase...(whew.......these people sure had enuf marriages..........), named their son Daniel WOOD Chase.......... .and now I see why. I figured their had to be a tie-in...that the name Daniel WOOD Chase didn't come outta thin air....They just didn't do things that way in those days. I also think, if I remember right, that they: Benj Chase Jr6) and Phebe B. M. Chase named their 1st dt after Mehitable Thurston's 1st husband Coggenshall... Think her name was Elizabeth...........so...........it all starts to make sense. So....Ginger, seems like you go back to the Woods too , in Eng. Perhaps you can help me in that line.Would appreciate help fr. anyone.......! Gary Salstrom...like I said has ALLLLLLLot of this info under his tree gsahl at Ancestry, and I'd like to compare. Ginger, by the way, I have enjoyed your stories too...and becaue of the proximity and names, tho I don't see Hathaway in my direct line, we may.... be related. I don't know if I tie in to the Bordens,,,,,,,but know alot of Chases do. I got a bit carried away the other night re my family....but it has dawned on me, that I ought to put all this info into one file.........in case any of the younger generations ever are interested. And Jeffrey........hope you had a nice time with Keith, and think this info will interest you too........ The 3 families apparently tie in going wayyyyy back. Barb [email protected]
Hi Diane, Yes, I would really appreciate it if you would put me in touch with your friend. Am beginning to think he may be in my line. Have 2 direct Benjamins, and my line also goes into the Woods and Cornells; and the Woods, besides the Chases are related to the Cornells. Also, Benjamin Chase came fr. Mass to Columbia Co, which I believe is very near Cayuga Co. and the Woods and Cornells. Just last night, I found a ton of info relating the Woods, Chases and Cornells...........I have to find the time to sort it out..............! And, I also found at the same site under gsal - Gary Salstrom, quite a bit of info I was looking for re Benj. Chase who m. Mehitable Thurston, he was suposedly her 4th hus. but I found that she had 1st been m. to a Coggeshall & had a dt., then m. Daniel Wood , then ? the name if she really m. again before marrying Benjamin Chase Sr., cause the marriage dates were only abt 5 yrs. apart. MUCH to straighten out. Am sending this to the Chase List also, as some may also be interested in this info........esp. Jeffrey. Also, perhaps someone can help re this info. Would certainly appreciate it. Chase, M.D. Hi, I have a friend that has a book called Dr. Chase's Last and Complete Works. It was published in 190l. His name is Alvin Wood Chase, born in Cayuga County, NY in 1817.He was the son of Benjamin Chase of Mass. I am getting this information from an In Memoriam in the front of the book. If this is the A.W. Chase, MD you are looking for I can put you in touch with the owner of the book. I believe he is listed in the Book Seven Generations of the descendents of Aquila and Thomas Chase. You can contact me at [email protected] Diane Chase Hinds
Sorry, I have no info on A.W. Chase but I also have a copy of the "Dr. Chase's Recipes" book, but copyrighted in 1902. Also on the cover it says "Enlarged and Improved Edition" and contains 600 pages. Published by Stanton and VanVliet Co. of Chicago. The cover is illustrated showing a nurse at the bedside of a patient. The first page has a lithograph of the good doctor. It is signed "Respectfully A. W. Chase M. D." Dear Barb. et al, Enjoyed your report about your NY Chases and their connections. Three years ago we took our trek through your country and stopped at Pompey where some of the Chases lived along with the Hathaways and Bordens. The Historian there took us to the graveyard to see the Borden and Hathaway graves. We never would have found it without her help as it was a private little one on a farm and very hard to locate. Keep the stories coming. Ginger in AZ
