    2. I descend from the Chases who lived in Wisconsin 150 years ago. Heman Chase & family moved from Lewis County, New York to Summit County, Ohio where Heman died. Around 1850 his son James W (& other Chases), James wife, Hannah, & their children moved to Wisconsin. First they were in Dane County but eventually settled in Chippewa County (Cooks Valley). James son, Charles, moved in his later years to Arkansas with his son, Arthur, my great grandfather. I know there were other Chases in Wisconsin. Are any of their decedants here on this list? I'd be happy to share what I have and hopefully obtain some new information in the process. 2. I have a loose CHASE in my records and would like to confirm my guess about his parentage and marriages. This is what I think may be correct, but really have been unable to find proof: Caleb-5, Jonathan-4, John-3, William-2, William-1 born in Yarmouth, Barnstable Co, MA on 25 Sep 1713 and md Priscilla Godfrey there in Nov 1734. I have a Caleb Chase md to Mary Wixam/Wixon in Yarmouth, Barnstable Co., MA on 8 Sep 1736. "Some of the Descendants of William Chase" lists only 1 child for Caleb and Priscilla, so it would seem reasonable to presume that she died during or soon after he was born. There are some mention of this 2nd marriage in LDS pedigrees but no documentation. The marriage to Mary Wixan/Wixon is in Yarmouth VRs so I know it actually took place. It is also noted in Wixam/Wixon genealogies that I have. Since he is the only male of that name and in the right time frame, I think that his first wife died and he married a 2nd time. Does anyone have any information on this situation? Would appreciate feed-back. Jeanne T. Lane

    3. Over the last few months the search to find proof regarding William "...of the First Fleet" origins. It might be as well if everyone concerned agreed as to what would be considered proof. This is an old chestnut but probably worth reviewing. So I would like to know the views of those descendants of William as to what they would consider proof because by agreeing the type of document required would be the best way of determining where to look. So my view is that at the very least it would be that it would require a contemporary document preferably from a recognised source. Records of births and marriages would appear to have little use in this case other than to suggest possible candidates. Recent postings to the list by Jeffrey give some possible candidates. The records of those born to him or his descendants in America actually stated where he came from. This is only liable to be in the records of the 2 children known to have been born to him but could possibly figure in the Wills of his children but I believe this has already been covered. From some details of his misdemeanors recorded in the Plymouth Colony records it would appear that they have been searched without success. What is really needed is a document that states either that he was from the Parish of his birth. or more correctly of his domicile just before he left to go to America. This is more likely to be found in the U.S could possibly be found in the Parish Records for as I have stated before it was necessary for those living in a Parish to seek the Lord of the Manor's permission to leave. Of course not everyone did this they just up and went. However by the very nature of the venture by the Mass. Bay Company it is highly likely that he would have had no problem getting permission to leave. As I have said previously I consider the search of those records to be the most likely to prove successful. The fly in the ointment is that some Parish records are in private hands. As is already known the Wivenhoe Court Records were last known to be owned by a private individual who has since died,( It is in the manor Court Records that such items as permission to leave would have been recorded). Another possible source could be the Wills,(if they made them), of the possible parents or grandparents of William who may have made bequests to him. Anybody else got any ideas where there might be a possible source of the information as to William's origins.? Keith Hume Incidentally I believe this same criteria could apply to the ancestors of Aquila and Thomas

    1. [CHASE-L] Chace/Chases of Wivenhoe
    2. Jeffrey Chace
    3. All, If William Chace came from Wivenhoe to America in 1630 and brought a Wife and an eight year old child with him, William was probably born around 1600 give or take a few years. That much, we already know, right? OK, Benjamin Chace could very well have been his father. And, Helen Harvy/vey his mother. The dates fit. But, have we all taken a very good look at the Boyd's Marriage records for Wivenhoe at that time? And have we eliminated each Chace/Chase family listed as being neither parents nor grandparents? Here are the marriages from Wivenhoe around that time. 1566 Chase John & Jone Jackson 1577 Chase John & Elizabeth Dennis 1580 Chase John & Rose Warren 1586 Chase John & Sarah Besabe 1591 Chase Benjamin & Helen Harvy 1600 Chase John & Elizabeth Puckle Have we ties between these families from other records? Look at the Essex Wills I have at my website. There is a Joan Chase, John Chace and there is a Richard Chase of Ardleigh (1574 Chase Richard & Cible Richardson, in Boyd's) whose will list a William as his son. We should really put a good family tree together with what we DO know of the Chace/Chases of Essex. Visual Thinking. 3. Good evening, I am assuming that I am writing to Lonnie Chase? I have the Chase CD that Keith Hume did and while looking through the 2000 reunion pictures, came across those of Wilson and his wife, Fay. Can you let me know where he is from? He looks so much like my father, Frank Chase, whose family lived in Caribou, Maine.I cannot find anything to indicate that they were not captured by aliens or fell off the planet.!! At least I am am not able to locate where they finally ended up. Derek Chase has suggested that the Chase forebears were of the loyalist line since they came out of NB, Canada. Anything you can tell me will be most appreciated. 3. Ginger and Keith, Good to hear from you both, you Ginger about William, and you Keith with a well received recognition of the 4th of July you posted yesterday. Thanks. I have been so very busy with work lately and have had no time to post. I am just swamped and snowed under at present. (a snowy swamp, what a mess!! :) Ginger, I am so sorry to hear that the raging fires have come so close. I don't know what the actual cause was in the Southwest and in Colorado, but it seems the fires were caused through malfeasance. What a shame. 2. While reading the most gracious holiday greeting from our "Limey" cousin Keith (His words, not mine), I was reminded of a humorous story. Many years ago my family and I were living in Bermuda. We spent about six years there. I had a very good English friend who was an employee of British Airways. He enjoyed teasing in a slightly sarcastic way. Every July 4th, he would say, "Isn't this the day that we gave you your independence?" to which I would reply. "No, it's the day that we whipped your butt and took it." That would silence him until he could think of a satisfactory comeback. To Keith and all of our other British friends, thanks it's good to have you as our allies in this war on terror. Art

Subject: Regarding the proper spelling of the name---Chase---Chace For what my opinion is worth--- Throughout history in researching any name we find many variations. I would assume this is true with our Chase---Chace name. Nuff said. The important point here is in my opinion that we need to continue pursuing the origin of our William. Perhaps through the information we gather on a cousin, nephew, brother of our William we might find further leads. Don't lose hope and continue pursuing every lead. we have to remember that we are NEVER FINISHED WITH OUR RESEARCH ON THE CHASE---CHACE NAME or any other name. Ginger in AZ. P.S. 3. And how could I have publicly omitted Ginger Reeder as one whose contributions made such a big difference - she being the one who deduced that "our" William came from the area around Wivenhoe! When I started as a novice Chase/Chace researcher, she was the one who spurred me on with her wonderful encouragement. I wanted my research standards to reach the level of hers. So, Jeffrey, you are following some mighty "heavy hitters" there................ Judy Chace Needham -----Original Message----- From: Judy Needham [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, July 05, 2002 11:13 AM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [CHASE-L] Re: Chase/Chace cd and qurey re William Jeffrey- I had posted a private response to Ginger - but I want to say public thank you to you, taking up the reins on the Continent, following in the footsteps of Keith Hume who did so much for us all (and thank you, Keith - for the good-spirited greetings to mark the celebration of the split between our countries). Sometimes we drop our research for six months or so due to family or business pressures, but then we pick it up with a "fresh" eye , a different tack, and lo and behold - a breakthrough is made! The answers to William's origins are out there, I feel sure. We're all hoping you will be the one to discover those origins..............We can wait. Best of luck! Judy Chace Needham
