3. I'd like to answer Barb Austin who in the genealogy she quotes as part of the transcription of the diary of Edward Payson Chase - see earlier emails and also below for link "http://www.rootsweb.com/~rinewpor/chase.html" does not cite Benjamin as a son of William Chase I and also lists his daughter Mary born in 1637 and goes on to say that he had a second daughter, Mary, born 1639, and names William II's wife as Alice Fish. Benjamin is definitely a son of William I as evidenced by his will wherein he leaves to "my son Benjamine...one heifer calfe and two steer Calves of a yeare old and upward." To "my son William whoe hath had of mee alreddy a good portion; the sume of five shillings...if hee Demand it. All the rest of my goods, Cattles and Chattles, I give unto Mary my wife..." What does this tell us? William and Benjamin were certainly the sons of William I. There were no other children alive then as law would have required them to share in the estate. The Scituate and Barnstable Church Records, as published in the NEHGS Register, Vol 9, page 286, says that Mary, daughter of Goodman Chase ye elder was buried Octob. 18, 1652. Her birth is elsewhere given as about 15 May 1637, and her brother Benjamin's as b. in 1639, bapt. at Roxbury 18 Apr 1652. About William II's birth being as early as 1622, it seems that it could be possible, although most references state the birth "as early as 1627". As to Alice Fish being William II's wife, I haven't seen any other references, but certainly bears research as her name continues to be unknown. I hope that everyone reads Edward Payson Chase's journal, so wonderfully transcribed by Barb Austin, for the minutiae of everyday life in the 1870s and 1880s. Judy Chace Needham

    3. Letter sent in answer to me personally from Barb Austin - who asked me to forward to the CHASE List. JCN said:: I question the following statements: Gen. from Journal: Issue: William, born ca 1622, in England; Mary, born in May 1637, in Roxbury; and Mary (2) born in 1639 in Yarmouth. II William Chase (2) born ca 1622, in England, married Alice Fish and was a resident of Yarmouth after coming to America with his parents. He died Feb 27, 1685. His children were: William, Jacob, John, Elizabeth, Abraham, Joseph, Benjamin and Samuel.< JCN said: <<First, William I, the Immigrant and his wife Mary, are said to have had three children, William b. in England as early as 1627 (You give his date of birth as 1622), Mary, b. about 15 May 1637 and Benjamin, b. in 1639. (You have a Mary listed twice, and no Benjamin.)>> Barb Austin (who transcribed Edward Chase's Journal answers:) Barb: First, I would assume that Mary (2) born 1639, was born after the first Mary born 1637 had died. Rep. Men & Old Families does not list Benjamin at all, altho a Chase biography that a friend had made up years ago, lists him as 3rd child (or 4th counting the first Mary) b 1639 Roxbury MA, d Freetown MA 1730 m 1673 Portsmouth to Phillipa Sherman. Said chart also lists Wm I & Mary married in 1622, for what it's worth. <And, then, you have William II marrying an Alice FISH when generally the names of both William's first and second wives are said to be unknown. Can you tell me the source for Alice FISH as the second William's wife?< I can tell you but you won't like it. It was a member of the Chase family who was 101 years old when she passed away in 2000. She had a genealogy chart made up years ago and lists, with no sources, Mary TOWNLEY as wife of Wm I. It lists Alice FISH as first wife of William II, m 1644 and 2nd mar to ? ca 1670. This came from the chart and I was in error not to list that as a source, although of course it is not authenticated. Have you checked Torreys early New England marriages, or whatever it's name is? With the exception of the last names of the two Marys of Wm. I and Wm II, all the rest came from "Representative Men and Old Families of Rhode Island" as stated. Let me state right here that I edited that info so as to shorten it a bit, I didn't want to write a book. I make no claims for its authenticity, I merely include it. You must do your own verification, but I'm sorry not to have mentioned the chart in the first posting. Barb Austin Judy Chace Needham

    3. Barb- I have seen this posting on the RI list also - where it is easier to go on to the web site referenced at the end with just a click. And, the information therein is what I have a question about. I question the following statements: Issue: William, born ca 1622, in England; Mary, born in May 1637, in Roxbury; and Mary (2) born in 1639 in Yarmouth. II William Chase (2) born ca 1622, in England, married Alice Fish and was a resident of Yarmouth after coming to America with his parents. He died Feb 27, 1685. His children were: William, Jacob, John, Elizabeth, Abraham, Joseph, Benhamin and Samuel. First, William I, the Immigrant and his wife Mary, are said to have had three children, William b. in England as early as 1627 (You give his date of birth as 1622), Mary, b. about 15 May 1637 and Benjamin, b. in 1639. (You have a Mary listed twice, and no Benjamin.) And, then, you have William II marrying an Alice FISH when generally the names of both William's first and second wives are said to be unknown. Can you tell me the source for Alice FISH as the second William's wife? I must admit, I do not have a copy of "Representative Men and Old Families of Rhode Island; Genealogical Records and Historical Sketches of Prominent and Representative Citizens and of Many of the old Families" at hand and so cannot tell if that is where this reference is found, although you seem to indicate that is where you found his line after your discovery of the identity of the author. I know you say you have no Chase bloodline, but perhaps you have researched this and come up with a new find! Thank you so much for your transcription of Edward's Journal. Although Edward and my Chace lines diverge after William II, I really am enjoying reading them - all those old RI names are so familiar to me, a Rhode Island-born transplant. You have really done a service for all of us. Judy Chace Needham

    2. I joint your list briefly to tell you of this website. A website has been set up for the diaries of Edward P. Chase which I recently transcribed. The URL is at the end of this introduction. Mr. Chase kept meticulous records for hours worked on various jobs, with the occasional personal note. At the end of each Journal are his monthly Balance Sheets. These were sold to an antique dealer who owns the old Sisson house on East Main Road, Portsmouth, RI. (I have Sisson lines.) He called me right away because, as he said, "You know every name in these books." He was right about that. He appears to have been a crony of my g grandfather Anthony's, I knew nothing about the writer when I began the journals except that he was probably a Chase. He mentioned the birth and death of a child and from his activities the day after, I learned the burial site. A 3rd child was born and he wrote her name across the top of the page, and I was off to both St. Mary's Episcopal Church in Portsmouth, RI and the Middletown, RI Town Hall. Between the two, I discovered a total of four children, two named, and birth and death dates. He called his wife Sallie and referred to a Mrs. Dennis occasionally. I checked on a Sarah Dennis in the cemetery records at St. Mary's. She was there, and her husband was named. Final confirmation was found in one of Journals when he listed himself as one of the workers on a job. In the Chase genealogy in Representative Men & Old Families of RI I found his ancestors, which ended with Edward. This info told only of his birth and his marriage to a Sarah Dennis. I found all the gravestones for the family at St. Mary's. Daniel Chase, Edward's father, owned land on both sides of Oliphant Lane, Middletown, RI, from which, on the south side of Oliphant Lane, he sold his son 1/4 acre where Edward built his own home in 1874 and 1875. Daniel Chase's house still stands but Edward's is gone. The land was sold to Edward for $10 in 1875, after his house was already built. Middletown Town Hall, Warranty Deed, Vol 12, page 175. Edward was a carpenter, but like most men of that era, did pretty much what he put his hand to. I believe he worked for Joseph Coggeshall, who was what we would call a general contractor today. Edward did some work on his own as well. He talks of building many homes, barns, etc. and also a church and schoolhouse. I tried to discover which church and schoolhouse but was unsuccessful. In addition to the work record, the little info he tells us paints a picture of a more simple time than we share today. Their days were long and hard, pleasures were small and infrequent, but they appreciated the little things. If you find anything you don't understand, or have any input on anything you DO understand, please tell me about it. Especially carpentry terms, such as "pins" What were they? He speaks of having Bessie"sharpened". Unless that is a new euphemism for breeding, I'm assuming Bessie was a horse and her shoes were sharpened, or a horse or cow was unshod and the hooves were sharpened. Ideas? This has truly been a "journey in a Journal." I appreciated their few pleasures --(as a child of the 30s myself-- cried at their losses, chastised Edward for some of his purchases "Why can't Sallie bake cookies? It would save money." I hope you enjoy reading these half as much as I enjoyed transcribing them. I have no Chase bloodline, but I love sleuthing. Edward Payson Chase Barb Austin

For those of us who were around on Pearl Harbor Day let us remember the END of WWII not the beginning and let those who lost loved ones grieve in their own way without all of this razzmatazz over 9-11. We still have our own way of dealing with such a tragedy and some of us are offended by how it has been handled. Perhaps the Media loves it. Ginger

    2. k.hume
    3. Other than the phrase "In Memoriam" one of the most common phrases used on memorials to those who have died in tragic circumstances is "Lest We Forget". Today virtually the whole world will remember the events that happened a year ago. Some commentators have referred to it as the "Day We Lost Our Innocence" but they would be those with short memories. That happened at least 88 years ago. So billions of people will remember this day,a year ago, when the difference between "Freedom Fighters" and terrorists was brought into sharp focus and no longer would those who used the bomb and the bullet nor the slaying of young children as a means to so called self determination be tolerated. The real tragedy was that it took such an event to bring this message home to so many. However the question I must ask is for how long will we not only remember those who died and, equally, the dear ones that were left to mourn. Forever? 100...50...20 years? Certainly 50 years for the immediacy,in both time and location, will ensure that.... but any longer ? There is an Autoroute,(Freeway), known as the A26, that runs from Calais in France down to the French Riviera. Some 75 miles from Calais the road passes only one and a half miles from a village named Bony. I would be surprised but also delighted if any who read this recognise the name but there are 1,844 American soldiers buried there among them 3 who were awarded the Medal of Honour. one from New York. Not far away, near Bellicourt, is one of the most beautiful and impressive war memorials I have ever seen. It was erected by America in memory of those men of the 27th and 30th American divisions who are buried at Bony and it also commemorates 333 others who are still classified as "Missing Presumed Dead". A total of 2,177 brave men for brave they were. as was borne out in the story I related of my father who fought alongside them in the battle to break the Hindenburg Line, when one of them helped save his life. Apart from beig graphic in design it is also most informative as, set in the finest marble, is a depiction of a compass and a map showing the movements of the U.S. Divisions so it is not difficult to envisage those brave men pouring across the fields towards where we stood and them geting mown down by German machine guns, for despite the assistance of the crack Australian battalions the objectives were not reached that day I know this is repeating what I have already written but every year, on the Monday following another 11th day,, 11th November 1918, 2 friends and I return to the World War I battlefields, tracing the route my father followed during his 2 years and 2 months on the Somme You could describe us as an unlikely group,an Australian, an Irishman and a Spaniard to make such a pilgrimage,( for pilgrimage is what it is). I make the arrangements, Danny, the Irishman drives the car and Francis, the Spaniard buys 3 small crosses, about 6 inches by four with a Flanders Poppy fixed at the centre. I place mine on any of the graves of my father's battalion I come across, Danny places his on the grave of his uncle who was killed near Amiens and Francis places his where he feels is most appropriate. For the last 2 years this has been at the American memorial for the very simple reason that apart from the wreaths placed by the local French there are no signs of Rememberance from the country from whence those heros came. Do not ask me why they appear to be forgotten for no other memorial built by the Allies is so sorely neglected. In saying "neglected" I refer to the lack of rememberance not of its codition for it is a pristine as the day it was built. Indeed the marble was so clean it seemed close to sacrilige to walk on it I know there is a U.S Commission responsible for the maintainence of the memorials and that it is located in France and surely the placing of a wreath once a year is not asking too much. I make no apology for raising this issue on this day but I hope you do not think it inappropriate. Our thoughts, here,in the UK are with you and although we are sometimes accused of living in the past, I would rather that than being found guilty of never visiting it at all, So "Lest We Forget" I will continue to make my annual pilgrimage. 3. Hi All, The 1st response gives the rootsweb link to the Chase Cemetery "Furnace Woods" in Westchester Co., NY. If this helps anybody, please let me know as we may tie into the same line. My Chases are fr. Westchester Co. and I will have to find time to look into this. Did not see anybody that was immediately familiar. By the way, would anybody know of a Quaker Cemetery in Westchester Co., especially Chatham, NY. I know there is one there, but do not know the name. It is right by a house that was a Quaker Meeting House and has Chases buried in it, but again, I don't know the names of those buried there........! I do know that some of my relatives are buried there. Another note while I'm at it. When my Chase relative went to Chatham a number of yrs. ago, he did not see a Benjamin Chase buried in the above cemetery. However, at that time, he didn't know what other 1st names to look for. We have Benjamin and Benj. Jr. Obviously Benj. Sr. isn't buried in Chatham, but I would bet his 1st wife Pheobe Barnard Macy Chase is buried there. Soon after her death, Benj. & Benj Jr. left Chatham and resided in Williamson (Sodus), NY with their wives and families, where Benjamin is supposed to have given land for a Quaker Meeting House. I have checked on line in Ontario Co (where Sodus and Williamson) are & also nearby Wayne Co. to no avail. I did see........and I believe it was under rootsweb someplace info on a Phebe Chase, but was unable to get into it. It was awhile ago........and I don't remember offhand why. Think it was because I didn't belong to ancestry.com. If anyone comes across this info or would be willing to look, I would much appreciate it. Benj 5 was 1st m. to Elizabeth Durfee and 2nd, Mehitable Thurston, fr. whom we are descended. Benj. 5 was lst m. to Phebe Barnard Macy Chase, then Lydia Macy Chase. Am also looking for Cornelius Chase and wife Mary Swayne, all from Chatham. It is interesting that the info you all found verifies what our Chase info says, that they received their papers to go to Farmington, NY (Ontario Co.), but they actually ended up in either Sodus or Williamson, NY., also Ontario Co., I believe. Sodus & Williamson are on Lake Ontario and Farmington is about 15-20 mi. south. We have no explanation for this.........! We have come to the conclusion that BenjaminJr. and wife must be buried here in the Rochester suburb of Henrietta. Unfortunately.................., the little Quaker Cemetery which was right near their home, is no longer there and there are no records of it that ANY Rochester area historian can find. Wegmans, which is a big supermarket chain here & and in PA, paved over the cemetery...........!!!! So.......it does look like I will not be able to substantiate the final resting place of some of my ancestors. I have to wonder how a business could be allowed to pave over a cemetery without moving the bodies and recording it. I know that the Quakers didn't believe in big headstones, but you would think there would , at least be markers, AND that the cemetery records would have to be recorded SOMEWHERE...........by law, if the remains were, in fact......., moved. Anybody have any ideas???????? 3. Hi all, I somehow inadvertantly deleted your 9/11 message Jeffrey. I had started to read it, and intended finishing after deleting all the junk mail. It was very interesting as far as I got. So.....would or anyone, please forward it to me again. It appeared to be info that I would like to pass on to friends. Thanks so very much! Barb Chase Thompson [email protected]

    3. Can anyone tell me the connection between Sarah Bella Dunlop Ludlow Chase or Salmon P Chase and Samuel Lewis? The burial record at Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati, OH for Sarah Bella states that her body was removed from Samuel Lewis' vault in Spring Grove and interred in a plot owned by Salmon P Chase. Thank you. Ed HERRON
