I Have now uploaded some pages to the CHASE/CHACE web site,(www.surnameweb.org/centers/c/chase/index.html The item, Image map,is at the bottom of the opening page.I have placed it there until I start loading the finished pages when it will be moved higher in the "Menu" The opening page gives 2 alternatives for accessing a persons web page. Constructive comments are invited from all Please note the Item "Comments" Immediately above it relates to the site not the Image map project, Please note the comments about loading times. I have put a straight Image of a map of the US up so people can see how long it takes to load. I feel that it may be necessary to break the maps into sections because for the sake of the Image Maps the scale needs to be reasonably large and, relatively, states such as Rhode Island are not, Keith

I hauled out my HUGE old dictionary and looked up "ensign"; here's a condensed version: Ensign, n. from L. insigna, a standard, badge; L insigne, neut. of insignis, distinguished by a mark, remarkable. 1. a badge, symbol, or token of office or authority. 2. a flag or banner, especially a military or naval banner. 3. in the British Army, formerly, a commissioned officer who served as standard-bearer. 4. in the U.S. Navy, a commissioned officer of the lowest rank . . . 5. a signal or sign. I wonder if common usage caused the word to be used to designate any person who carried the flag? Jean Edwards in Citrus Heights CA

And there's a VERY easy solution to the problem of replies going to the originator and not to the list (in most cases): there's a switch the ListMom can set so that the list default is reply to the list. Keith, I did your test and it loaded very quickly. But I have the high speed connection. Thanks for getting this project underway. I live in Alberta in Western Canada, but I am researching Chase families from the Maritime region of Canada (especially Nova Scotia). When I find the place of birth of my elusive Thomas Chase (born abt 1792) who lived in Lunenburg Co, NS and used the alias Thomas Linnell, I can expand my research to that area. I agree that it would be nice to to be able to connect with others who are researching the same area. Hello Keith and fellow Chase researchers: I have a 56K modem (we just haven't done the DSL thing yet, although I know we should) and the page loaded fairly quickly (less than 30 seconds). I agree that you may have to break up the map into sections, just to accomodate some of our smaller eastern states. Nice start Keith. Thanks for all that you do. May I make a request. I know Keith will agree. I subscribed to this list to learn more about the Chase family and I read every post. People ask good questions and it becomes frustrating to see no reply to that post only to find out that the replies were sent to the poster and not to the list. I was guilty of this to but it was because I thought I was replying to the list. What I found out is to reply to the list you need to "reply to all" then the person who made the post and the list are listed in the to line and both will get a copy. Soooooooooo, please post to the list so we all can enjoy the information. Rochelle Jacobs

I use a cable modem so the loading time was very quick. The pages were easy to read. If you feel that the map needs to be broke up may I suggest that the northeastern states be enlarged even more or allow the map to be enlarged. Good job Rochelle Jacobs
Dear Dick, You are very prompt and very thorough in your answer. You have filled out the welcome detail that we all love to have present in our accounts of the "old ones." Thank you so much for your quick eye and ready reply. Sincerely, Ellie Pelcyger
All right! Baptists! I have so many upright Presbyterians in my background that a Baptist--indeed probably a whole line of Baptists--is most welcome! Thank you so much. You have provided some wonderful, colorful history here with people in snow-shoes waging war on the native people. You are drawing me inexorably into the web of American history. I have looked up the word, "ensign" and discovered that, although it is the lowest ranked officer in the US navy, in England it was the Ensign who carried the flag. This is an abbreviated definition. We don't know if a snow-shoe officer carried the flag. Gratefully, Ellie Pelcyger
I could use some information about James Chase, born 15 Sept 1685. He is number 10 on page 39 of Seven Generations of the Descendants of Aquila and Thomas Chase. His biographical info should be somewhere around page 50. I need to know when he died, whom he married and when; any juicy little pieces of info about where he lived and what he did; and who his kids were. Also, why was Ensign Moses Chase and ensign? I seem to remember that's a naval title. And what religious denomination did the early Chases subscribe to in Newbury? The title of Deacon was important enough to include in the biographical material, so I gather their church was their rock. Thanks in advance, Ellie Pelcyger
Here's to a lovely lady from California, Virginia Chase, who has offered many Chases the service of copying out their line from the book, Seven Generations of the Descendants of Aquila and Thomas Chase. She sent me, at her own expense, many pages, highlighted where my line came in. This is the kind of generocity that makes a site like this great. With her help, I will be able to fill out my line up to my grandfather and add it to the Chase data base, wherever it is. Kudos to Virginia, who gets her kicks by helping others. Gratefully, Ellie Pelcyger

Hi,Donna, Not quite sure what you mean but it will never be too late to beincluded in the project. At the moment I am working on a web page showing my details to put on the web. This will include a map showing where I live in England. Please do not send me any information yet until I have received all the comments and made it so the "vital" parts of the 90, that is how many have "enrolled" . On reflection I have decided that the basic details such as Name, email, location, research and descendant information should be sent to me in a standardised format so I only have to convert to html to put on the Web site ----- Original Message ----- From: "Donna Dunham Jones" <[email protected]> To: "KEITH HUME" <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, October 17, 2002 12:31 AM Subject: Re: [CHASE-L] Sally Chase abt 1761 Plympton MA > If you are not already "In" for the Image Mapping project do you wnt this > information listed.? > > Please do. Janae, In the "Seven Generations of Aquila and Thomas Chase" page 398, family 1037 lists Benjamin Chapman Chase (Moody, Capt. Moses, Daniel, Ens. I don't know if my first request for Map In went through, however count me in. Harold Chase [email protected]
I'd like to participate, but I don't have much to share.
Can someone tell me who Benjamin Chapman Chase's parents are? He was born 8 Sept 1793 in Cornish, New Hampshire. He married Eliza Stevens Royce. Thanks, Janae
