    1. [CHASE-L] Wayland Chase
    2. I am hoping to find descendants of Wayland William Chase, born 1865 who married Ruth (last name unknown). Wayland was the son of John Nelson Chase, born In Amesbury, Mass. in 1833, and Elizabeth Allen. Wayland was a professor at University of Chicago in the early 20th Century, so his offspring may have been born in Chicago, IL. In the early 1900's, my grandfather, Will Simonds, who was Wayland's younger cousin, wrote him a long and colorful account of their Grandfather, John Chase of Nashua. It contains wonderful details about life in Nashua in the 1860's and 70's, and character sketches of John, his wife, Martha, and their offspring. He details where family members were buried and provides the framework for generational research into that branch of the Chase family. I have a copy of that manuscript, and hope that Wayland's descendants have the original; but if they do not, I am happy to share it with them while I compile my Chase family tree. Please reply to: Eleanor Pelcyger

    1. [CHASE-L] Ensign-Tall
    2. Meg Stockwell
    3. The Chase men in our family are all tall. My father, David, the youngest was 5'11", his father and brothers were all taller than 6 feet. My son, Loren is 6'4". Is this true in other Chase families? It would be interesting to see if there are any special features or coloring linked to the Chase line. Our family were all blue eyed with blond hair. My nephew was interested in health histories, too. The women, all from different lines because this is my male line, were all short.

    3. Ensigns in the militias or Continental Line during Revolutionary War were officers under Lieutenant. A direct male descendant of such is eligible for the Society of Cincinnatie. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, October 20, 2002 4:48 PM Subject: [CHASE-L] Re:The tallest man problem > In a message dated 10/19/02 6:32:33 AM Pacific Daylight Time, Treborchas > writes: > > > > Hi Ellie -- I was waiting to see if you got an answer to your question re > > "ensign." 1. Re: [CHASE-L] Re:the rank of Ensign
    2. According to the Naval Historical Center, while the title of Ensign was first used to designate the bearer of the flag in medieval times, the French first adopted the title for the lowest rank of an officer in infantry units, and that rank was also used by American military units for the lowest commissioned officer rank in colonial times. It did not become a naval rank until 1652 when it was adopted and applied to graduates of the Naval Academy. Dick Chase

    3. Hi, Thank you. See my earlier response to the list, It appears that the US map takes about 30 seconds to load. I have found an easier one to use but will format it so that New England is an enlarged section so you will click in the area of New England and be shown an enlarged view of that area. You can then select the appropriate State. So far I have had no specific comments as to the using 2 methods to access an individual i.e. via the Country map or the Lst method. It is virtually no extra work so unless anyone comes up with any ideas that is I will retain it. 3. Rochelle, How right you are. One of the things I wished to bring to everyone's attention (for there seem to be quite a few new faces on the list these days), is that all of the previous messages on this list concerning so many interesting and oft bespoken subjects are not only browsable, but also searchable. What a treasure chest of past correspondence. Searching http://listsearches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl?list=CHASE Browsing http://archiver.rootsweb.com/CHASE-L/ Yours, Jeffrey Chace

Moses, my notes show:   Records show Moses as owner of 100 acres of land in Newbury.  He was a self-styled weaver, and also acquired the title "Ensign" when he served from 1704 to 1710 with that rank in Captain Hugh March's Company of snow shoe men.  (Note: this period coincided with what was known as Queen Anne's War, during which the French (from Canada) and their Indian allies raided English settlements throughout New England where they were engaged by both British troops and local militia.  Presumably Moses was involved in this conflict. And about their religion, my notes for Seth (Grandson of Ens. Moses): "a comb maker";  also, a Deacon of the Baptist Church in Sutton, Mass.[cb.FTW]      Seth was the third child of Moses Chase and Elizabeth Wells.      Records show him to have been a comb maker.   Also of interest is a comment that while he had been a member of the Congregational Church in Sutton, he joined the Baptist Church, becoming a Deacon.
