Jesse Chandler of Henry and Franklin Co., VA (continued from 12/1/98 message) (Part two) If you are a Chandler descendant, you should look into the Chandler Family Association (CFA). This association is an excellent organization that focuses on Chandler Family genealogy research and publishes professional research in their Newsletter (three per year). They have traced the lineage of John Chandler (landed at Jamestown in 1610). The history has progressed to a time in the early 1800s and more research is published with each issue of the Newsletter. It should be noted that there were more than one group of Chandlers that immigrated to this country and that the CFA research addresses the group that descended from John Chandler. They have also published a family index that contains over 65,000 names. I you want more information, please contact Gayle Keough (e-mail Sec) at [email protected] and ask for information (be sure to ask about back issues of the newsletter). Two different Jesse Chandlers are noted in the CFA research in their newsletter. Additionally their special publication "Chandlers in the American Revolution VA - NC - SC - GA lists 5 Individuals named Jesse Chandler (not all were Revolution Veterans) who were alive in the period of the Revolution. This list of 5 includes the two mentioned as being outlined in the earlier Newsletters. Of the two Jesses profiled in the CFA newsletter, only one appears to have the possibility to be the Franklin Co. Jesse under discussion. The Newsletter (June 1994) is quoted: "Jesse [Joell, Robt., Robt., John] was born ca 1726 in Henrico Co., Va In 1754 he was in Cumberland Co., VA (WB1, p100) and on the Cumberland Co. 1759 Tithe List. & by 1770 Pittsylvania Co. Tithe list. In 1793 he appears in Henry Co. records (DB5, p56) as "Jesse Chandler of S.C.". In the U.S. Census of 1790, 1800, & 1810 Jesse appears in Greenville Co, SC. Neither Jesse's wife or children's names are known. He may have died after 1810 in Greenville Co., SC. The SC wills for two contemporary Jesse Chandlers, one in Abbeville Co. (d. 1804 and one in Richland County, SC." I should be noted, that in 1790 maps, Henry Co. and Franklin Co., VA are adjacent - Franklin to the north and Henry to the south on the NC border. The combined north/south size is about 50 miles. Henry was the wider of the two and is about 75 miles wide.. In 1791, Henry is split to form an additional county named Patrick. At this point Henry is only about 25 miles wide. A Jesse Chandler does appear in the 1810 Franklin Co., VA census. (41210-1100100). This indicates that the oldest male is age 21-45 and oldest female is over 45. It should be noted that the 1800 US census for this area does not exist. Who is this Jesse Chandler? There are a number of documents that were gathered by Mrs. Sigmon that seem to indicate that it may have been the Henry Co. Jesse. Facts against this premise are that the 1793 deed mentioned by the CFA does call him "Jesse Chandler of S.C. This does not absolutely mean that they are not the same Jesse, he may have moved to SC and later back to Franklin Co. The 1810 census age recordings also seem to indicate that the Franklin Co. Jesse was not old enough to have been the Jesse that was appointed Lt. of Militia in Henry Co. in 1777. At this point I will quit. I will continue in the next part with documents relating to the Franklin Jesse and his descendants. It may be after the weekend before I continue with part 3. Dr. H.
