In tracing my "direct CHANDLER line", I have gone back to ca 1740 when Joseph CHANDLER was born in Caswell County, North Carolina. He died December 9, 1805, in the same county, leaving a will dated May 1800. CHANDLER, b ca 1825 THOMAS BOSWELL CHANDLER Thomas Boswell G'fiANDLER, son of William and Sally (BOSWELL) CHANDLER, was born 22 Oct 1813 in Caswell Co, NG. He died in Webster Co, MO 10 Jan 1872-75. About 28 Nov 1838 (date on Marriage Bond) he was married to Sarah (Sally) Elizabeth HIGHTOWER, dau of Devereaux and Cicely (GOOCH) HIGHTOWER. Sarah was b 15 Nov 1821 in NCi d 7 Mar 1875 in Webster Co, M0. Although there are no grave markers to verify this, both Thomas and Sarah are said to be buried in the old Hightower graveyard near Niangua, Missouri, now known as the Hamilton Graveyazd on Bill HAMILTON's farm. CHANDLER and his family left North Carolina and came to Missouri, but according to the l860 Webster Co, MO census, they probably came about 1858, as their son John S. was four years old, born in NC and his s is ter, Elizabeth D. was two years old and born in Missouri. Julia Ann was born March 8, 1856, two days a married at sixteen. They lived near Niangua, Webster County all their lives. John farmed, and owned and operated a store and a blacksmith shop in a little set tlement consisting of that shop, two stores and two houses. This settlement, located in Northeast Glebster County about six miles f rom Niangua, was called San Diego or Little Diego. AR KIN, Yol. IV, No. 4 The Chandlers lived in one house back of the store, and John and Betty TH and their children lived in the other. The Smith house sat some distance from the but later Charlie McELFISH bought it a.nd moved it up by the road. He built a canning facto ry there a short time later. After John CHANDLER's death, the community became knosm as Vance, Missouri. Located about a quart.ec- of a mile north :f San Diego was the Cood Spring Mission- ry Baptist Church, where John a,nd Julia and their family were in attendance every time the doors were opened. John was a decan until his death he took care of the church, and Julia and the children continued caring for it ater his death. John died on Decernber 6, 1903 at the age of 47 years and Julia died on January 3, 1925, aged 69.
