My CHANDLER dilemma. John Henry Chandler was born in GA 14 Aug 1831, and when grown moved to TX, where he married Elizabeth Cameron. He had 2 known sisters, RITTY Chandler and AMANDA Chandler. Cannot determine his parents, or any other siblings. I "think" John Henry is a son or grandson of JOHN Chandler a Rev. War soldier from VA. John was in Gwinnett Co. GA in 1830, then in Benton (now Calhoun) Co. AL during the 1830s and 1840s. A cousin started this research before he died, and wrote to a genealogist in Tuscaloosa, AL. trying to trace Ritty, who married a Harrison. She could not locate Ritty Chandler Harrison but had this to say: "A strange thing: John Chandler, a Revolutionary War pensioner in Benton Co., AL, on his last payment it was stated that he died Feb. 19, 1850, in Benton County and was survived by an only child, RITTA Chandler Taylor." The 1850 Census of Benton County, AL has a 60 year-old female named "RITTER" married to a man named Taylor, born in SC, and she had a daughter, Elizabeth, born in GA. "Ritter" is probably a variant of Ritta or Ritty. The cousin saw a postcard written in 1885 from an Elizabeth Ann Mathews to Amanda (Chandler) Ridgeway saying "I am the only daughter of your sister Ritty....". Do any of these names mean anything to you? May I hear from you? Kathryn [email protected]
