Donna, I have some information about John Dunn & I am passing the information to the Chandler group also, as there might be somebody else I can help and maybe they can help me. I have been searching for Chandlers in the western area of VA & SC around the early 1800s. Specifically I am looking for the parents of Thompson Chandler b, Feb 11, 1811. (originally I thought he was born in Giles Co. VA, but now I am homing in on Surry and Stokes Co., NC) He was married in Giles Co on July 25, 1831 to Margaret Smith, and I know almost everything about his descendants from that point forward (over 500 in data base). About 1863 he migrated down the New River Valley to the Kanawha Valley (Charleston, WV area) with most but not all of his 10 children. I suspect his father was a William Chandler since he named his first son William Thompson Chandler. I have also started to think that my Thompson was also a William Thompson Chandler, but that he only used his second name. I have found this occurrence in other names I have researched. As a part of my effort, I have extracted Chandler marriages from Broderbunds Family Tree Maker CD #229 "Marriage Index: KY, NC, TN, VA, WV 1728-1850. I use this CD a lot since it is possible to find a women's name that was not listed in census records of that era unless they were the head of a household. The index lists over 582,000 marriage records in 333 counties. I have extracted 382 Chandler marriages. I have checked your names against the list and while the record only shows name, date and location, it is possible to order a photo copy of the actual marriage certificate from Broderbund resources for less than $10. I bought one for my Thompson and it does match the one I received from Giles County records. Now about Mary M. Chandler b. cir 1804 in Halifax Co. Va. m. 6 Jan 1823 in Halifax Co. Va. The marriage is listed and also an Elizabeth Chandler and William Dunn m. may 4, 1829 and Samuel Dunn and Maria Chandler, m. Dec. 18, 1844. I would guess this group are Chandler sisters and Dunn brothers. The other names might help in your search. I found 11 marriages of Martha Chandlers, but none to a Vaughn. The closest geographic match I found was a Martha Chandler to a John Faulkerson m. May 28, 1834 in Halifax Co., VA. There are a lot of John Vaughns listed elsewhere. Have you checked out the Chandler Family Association? They have over 60,000 names in their data base. I joined a few months ago, but unfortunately my Thompson Chandler branch was not on the list. If you are interested, ask and I will send their address. They have Chandlers in America by 1609.
