Looking for any information on Thilman Chandler. He's in Therese Fisher's book "Marriages of Caroline County ..." as married to Ursilla Chandler in 1821 by Willaim Bishop, a black minister. His bondsman was Turner Grymes. Thilman shows up in the Caroline County, VA 1830 census married to Ursilla Chandler with three children. Neither he nor his family are in the 1840 census of Caroline County; however his wife and chuldren appear in the 1850 census of Caroline. Assuming that Virginia was racist (segregated?) in 1821, was it unusual for a white man to be married by a black minister? What cicumstances would permit this behavior?
