Theophilus is a common name for a male, but this is the first I have heard of it being used for a female." Yes, isn't Family Search entertaining? According to George Chandler's _The Chandler Family_, Theophilus Bates was indeed a male, and no, Vermont, though ahead of the curve on gay marriage, was not this far ahead. Theophilus, according to the book, married Henry's SISTER Esther on that date. Of Henry it says he "went as a teacher to North Carolina and died there." No further record appears in the book.
