His sister Elizabeth was raised by the Martins or Rodgers. They lived in Meck-Co. Va. The family moved to Carroll Co. Tenn. around 1860. John lived with till he was able to take care of himself. We found them on the 1860 census. Also found John and his family along with Elizabeth on the 1870 census. He named his children George, Henry Louis, Maggie, Nettie Ann, Rosa Etta, Solon, and Royce Edgar. Solon named his children John Henry, Jimmy Dwane, Jerry Davis, Robert Solen, Bertha, JoAnn, Joyce, and Danny Loyld. Would appreciate any information you might have or know. Thank you, Bertha

I've spent quite a lot of time looking for a Chandler, also, and I try to leave no stone unturned! In my case, the missing ancestor is IRICK CLAY CHANDLER, b. abt. 1846 in N.C. or N.Y., depending on which document you read. He did come to Texas from N.C. That much is documented. And he died in Waco, TX in 1911. If you could possibly post some background information on OLIVE BELLE CHANDLER and JULIUS CHANDLER, such as locations and time frames, some of the other searchers just might have some info you can use. Keep trying and good luck. Lois

It sounds as though someone perhaps gave Emory's name as "Em," and the enumerator wrote "M." I looked at the image of the 1860 census page with Solomon's family, and the name of the 74 year old doesn't look like "Senie" to me, although I can't do any better. The last two letters look more like "VE" than "IE" to me, but that doesn't look like a name I've ever seen, and I'm only familiar with Sene/Senie as a nickname for the woman's name Asenath. Maybe the 1850 census would help, or maybe there's a death record for the 74 year old.

    1. [CHANDLER] Joe Chandler - 1899-1984
    2. I am still searching for any information on my father Joe Buster Chandler b. 1899 Spokane, WA. Joe left Washington in 1925 and migrated to San Diego, CA. by 1926, where he married in 1930 and eventually died in 1984. He said his father was from Des Moines, IA but I have no way to make any connections since there were no brother's or sister's to Joe, nor do I have a consistent name for Joe's father. He states on (1930) Marriage cert. that his father's name was A.J. Chandler and on his (1937) Social Security application it was John J. Chandler. In the 1930 Calif. census he states his parents were both from Michigan. Joe said his mother died when he was about three years old (1904) in Spokane. Joe said he left home at eight years of age, so his father may have died about 1909. He said he was raised by an Aunt which may have been his father's brother's wife. His Uncle was supoposed to have been in the service in WW1. Dave Chandler - Famsource@aol.com

    2. Dick Chandler
    3. Thomas/Harlow I have looked at the Ancestry image of the original 1880 Census, and confirm that the initial is definitely M Chandler. The wife's name seems to be spelled Rachael. I have looked in the 1870 Census for Madison County, North Carolina (where the townships are numbered and not named, so I can't home in on Marshall) - the only possibility I can see is James M Chandler shown as aged 25 living with Farmer father Martin Chandler (68) and his wife Lucinda (61). The problem is that Martin's birthplace is shown as South not North Carolina, but the 1880 Census could be inaccurate. It is possible that James M stands for James Martin and that when his father died he used the name Martin instead of James. Sorry not to be able to help further. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/iUI.2ACIB/1959.1.1.1 Message Board Post: I don't know of an easy way to do this. First, this is not my Chandler line, and I'm not familiar with them or the area. So what I would do is probably not the best way to proceed. First I guess I'd want to confirm that the "M" is correct by looking at an image of the actual census page. Unfortunately my HeritageQuest subscription doesn't cover 1880, but I believe that an Ancestry.com census image subscription would, so if you could find someone to check that it might be a good start. Often the children of one family would live next to their parents, but there seemed to be no other Chandlers in Marshall. The other families were in Ivy and White Rock, and they tended to be clustered. I didn't check all of them, so I guess the next thing I'd do, since I have the images available, would be go through all of them and see if there's a male the right age who looks possible. I've got a slow dial-up connection, though, and it takes me a long time. If you can get to a Family History Center you might want to check some of the filmed records of marriages, land records, and so on that you can rent from the LDS Family History Library. You can search the catalog online here: http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp Marshall is on the county line I think, so maybe the family was from an adjacent county--I did try one and didn't find anything. Madison County was formed from Buncombe and Yancey Counties, and there's an Old Buncombe County Genealogical Society that might be able to help. Their website might give you some ideas http://www.obcgs.com/ Madison County was named for James Madison and Marshall was named for John Marshall. This happened more or less around the time of the Civil War and feelings were probably fairly strong. I noticed in the census index that there were James. M and John M. individuals as well as some Andrew Jackson _____ individuals, so it is possible that if that "M" is correct it's a middle name (I noticed one Jackson Chandler seemed to be the Andrew Jackson Chandler I saw elsewhere). So you might possibly be looking for a James or John. Incidentally, Ida Belle was a hugely popular name in the latter 1800s, but I have no idea why--perhaps from some popular figure in history or literature.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/iUI.2ACIB/1959.1 Message Board Post: The LDS 1880 census extractions show Ida in the household of M. Chandler age 33, b. NC as were both parents. He's in Marshall, Madison Co. NC with wife Rachel, 22 and other children Robert, 5 and Alexander, 1. I looked quickly atthe 1870, 1860 and 1900 census images for Chandlers in Madison Co. for households that looked likely, but didn't find anyone who might be this M. Chandler. The extraction could be wrong--it might not be "M." and I didn't cover all the Chandler families indexed. It might be that in 1870 he was in another county. It's also possible, since in 1880 the husband was 33 and the wife 22 and since the oldest child was 5, that Rachel was a second wife.
