No sources were given for the information. If there are any of you fellow researches who might be in that vicinity or have access to any records which might be relevant, I would be most appreciative of your input. The marriage was supposedly between Henry Roswell Chandler (a Wm. and Annis descendant) and Theophilus Bates. Theophilus is a common name for a male, but this is the first I have heard of it being used for a female. Thus I would like to verify the accuracy of this marriage record.. Henry Roswell was the son of John Chandler and Esther Painter., grandson of ThomasChandler and Elizabeth Elliott, g-gs of John "C" and Mary Raynomd, gg-gs of John "C" and Elizabeth Douglas, ggg-gs of William "C" and Annis Agnes Bayford.

Anyway, I checked and your Dr. Robert Chandler born 1759/60 is NOT in the Book of Descendants of 1610 John Chandler of Virginia (actually, just a data base), which contains more than 93,000 and adding. In fact, it is HIGHLY UNLIKELY that a Chandler born in Connecticutt at that time would have been part of any of the Virginia families and the family of 1610 John is the only Chandler family of which I am aware that descendants have been found. It is far MORE LIKELY that your Robert descends from one of the New England families, the earliest of which was founded by John Chandler who arrived at Plymouth Colony in 1621 aboard the "Fortune," 364 days after the Mayflower. I seem to recall there was also some back-and-forth between one or more Connecticutt and New Jersey Chandler families that may be worth checking. Their trails can be picked in a lot of places - maybe even a half-way reliable clue on the WWW, but be careful and always "trust but verify." JC

There you will find the most complete (to date) and accurate of this John Chandler who landed at Jamestown on Sunday, June 10, 1610. Begin with the August/September 2000 issue, which contains everything known to that date about John (a few largely corroborative facts have been obtained since then), together with a great deal of background about the expedition in which he traveled and many of the unknowns of his experience. The article is meticulously documented. Subsequent articles (5 of them) expand upon some of his known descendants through the 5th generation. If you know the name of most remote ancestor, you may find him there. You can also post another message with the name of your most remote Chandler or send me a personal e-mail and I will attempt look to see if your ancestor is already in the Chandler Family Association (CFA), more than 93,000 names and adding, and let you know if I find him. TIMOTHY became a very common family name beginning in the 4th generation. He did arrive aboard the ship "Hercules" and he did marry Elizabeth -?-, the widow Lupo, widow of Lt. Albiano Lupo whose will was probated (now lost) in October 1626. JC

Do you know who Steward Chandler's parents were and where they lived? I assume he and Adolpha Boyce married ca 1870-1875. Do you know where they married? I don't recognize the Steward Chandler name. However, I will keep it in my files and if I run across it, I will let you know. Until then, if you have a bit more information on this Chandler, it will help to pin down to which Chandler line he belongs. Do you know the names of his children? That might give you a clue as to who his parents were.

Do you know what the initial 'B' stood for? Was his name John Bethel Chandler, or was that the name of a son? Do you know when he was born? The date could help pin down who he was, and possibly who his parents were. Do you have a clue abt. his parents? Who was the wife of John B. Chandler? What about the names of any children? Often those names provide excellent clues about grandparents. Annamae Barber Chandler has several John B. Chandlers listed in her Chandler book, but not a John Bethel Chandler. However, he may be one of the John B. Chandlers in the book, if you could provide a bit more to go on. John Bethel is not a name I've run across in my Chandler line, as yet. That is not to say it isn't there! The Chandlers were a huge family, and he may very well be amidst the many offspring.

But, regarding the "sources" you mentioned, I am completely conversant with the few that your source listed don't contain all of the conclusions attributed to them - far from it, and your presumably professional genealogist should have so informed you if he/she was worth the money you paid him/her. The original, legitimate sources that say anything directly about the first few generations of Virginia Chandlers are actually relatively few - many often sited sources are actually secondary (i.e., copies or extracted from original sources) or tiertiary sources (i.e., third-hand or worse). Frequently, they become "embellished" in repetition, but a lot of the misinformation arises from suppositions presented as fact without caveats or admissions distinguishing facts from guesses. Anyway, 5 minutes with my articles and CFA "Newsletter" articles and you will see the difference between junk genealogy and real research. If you have additional questions after reading these sources, please post more queries. JC
