Surnames: Chandler, Holbrook, Maybrick Classification: Biography Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/iUI.2ACIB/1986 Message Board Post: Mobile, Alabama Newspaper Sun., Jan. 31, 1904 "Lloyd's Weekly Newspaper says this morning that Mrs. Florence Maybrick, the American woman who was serving a life sentence on the charge of having poisoned her husband, was released from the Aylesbury Female Convict prison ... January 26." Mrs. Maybrick had married James Maybrick, of Liverpool, England, in 1879. April 27, 1889, he was taken ill and died. Mrs. Maybrick was convicted of the murder and sentenced to death, with a sentence commuted to life imprisonment, according to the newspaper. "Mrs. Maybrick's ... mother was Miss Carrie Holbrook, daughter of a rich New York merchant, who married in New York William G. Chandler, of Mobile, a member of the commission firm of St. John A. Powers. ... Soon after William Chandler's death in 1862, Mrs. Chandler and her little son and daughter moved to Macon, Ga., and thence to Europe, where Florence received an education. ... "Florence met James Maybrick in Germany. He was a cotton merchant of Liverpool, Norfolk and Galveston. ... "As to the mother, she was a brilliant society woman, stylish, though not pretty. She had gone to Mobile about 1868, visiting her uncle, the Rev. J.H. Ingraham, D. D., author of 'The Prince of the Peace of David,' etc., and at that time pastor of St. John's Church. She became very popular in society, being a good conversationalist, handsome and prepossessing. Young Chandler was the favored suitor of Miss Holbrook. He followed her to New York and there they were married. Returned to Mobile, they lived in good style. Mrs. Chandler increased her influence in society, and was even as much of a belle as before her marriage."

Surnames: Maynard, Shaw, Chandler, Womack, King, Cole Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/iUI.2ACIB/1949.1.1.1.1.1 Message Board Post: All I can tell you is what I 've been told. My GGgrandfather John Bethel(Bothel) was born in Dec. 27, 1855 in Va. Don't know the county or town. His mother died soon after he was born. He went to live with his Granny Nancy James and George JAmes. They are on the 1850 Census of Meck. co. They moved to Carroll Co. Tenn. around 1856 or little later . They are on the 1860's Carroll Co. Census. I was told by another emailer that his father's name was William Chandler . William's parents are suppose to be Joel and Hannah (Davis). of Virginia. William 's nickname was Sandy, This was told me by a woman who said her husband was a direct descendant of George James (Woodell). There was also another son called Joseph. We believe a daughter Elizabeth raised by the Isaac Martin Family was also a sister. She shows up in the 1870;s Carroll Co. Census living with John Chandler and his family. A wife and son George L. Chandler. I know nothing of John Bethel's life except where my mother tells ! me this: John B. went to work on the Russell farm. He met Viola Russell . HE was 33 and she was 16 when they got married. Her parents were against the marriage but they were married anyway. They were married in Limestone Co. Ala. They met in Wales Tenn. Wales fits in somewhere but don't remember exactly. They lived in Ala for several years. They had Nettie in 1894 and Maggie the next year I think. Henry Louis was born sometime either in Ala. or in Texas. Rose Etta was born in Paris, Texas along with Solon in 1908. There was a Roise who died when he was in his teens and Royce Edgar Chandler was born in Hillsbora Texas. I'm sorry but my papers are packed. Maggie married a David Land from Limestone Al. Nettie Ann married a Marvin Wallace Womack.Ala. Rose Etta married a Maynard Ala. Shaw_Tex. Henry Louis married a Sally Ann Riley Tex Solon married a Tine Cole Tex Royce married a Ann Matthews.Tex I did find a Tn. William Chandler whose parents are Joel and HAnnah David Chandler. They were born in Va. William in Tennesse. That could account for not being able to find him. The source said he was married to a Anna Stone. I haven't been able to locate anything to compare this to. John and Viola moved to Hillsbora , Texas where they had Royce Edgar , and later moved to Pettus, Texas in Bee Co. Texas. They lived there and are in the 1830 Census. Also in 1920 Census of Lamar Co. I believe the older Chandler's could have been from North Carolina. Joel Chandler's parents were David Jr. and Millie Vaughn. When Rose Etta was about 4 either in Ala. or Paris, Texas, she said a lady and a boy around 6 with a cousin came to see them. She was married to John's father and told him that the boy was Robert Cleveland Samuel Chandler. He was born in Fannin Co. HoneyGrove in Nov, 6, 1885. Robert later came to live with them when he was around 16 while they were living in the Paris area. They lived just outside of Paris in some small town. Holland or Howland. ?It's listed on my Solon's birth certificate. He lived with them till he married Viola's cousin Gertrude. Her parents lived in the Valley and ran a grocery store. I'm sorry I can't give you a clearer picture. Hope this might help. I'll get my paper out and look up the exact dates soon. I would love to find out more about my Grandpa Solon's father's people . I often thought that was why they moved to Texas to be closer to his family. I don't know. He might have been married before he married Viola and had children . Thank you, B! ertha

According to C. Horace Hubbard's _History of the Town of Springfield, Vermont_, Theophilus had two children, Job and a daughter, by his first wife. The book gives the 8 Jan. date for Esther's marriage, by the way. There's a picture of Theophilus Bates in the book--I'm not sure if it's this one or his nephew, but if you find a link to him you might want to see it. So far this morning I can't find anything on Theophilus Bates Chandler. Theophilus Bates of Springfield was a notable citizen, and it may be that one of the other siblings of Esther named a son for him, or could it be this is another Chandler family altogether? I have to get to work--I'll look later, but I don't have any reason to think I'll find anything if you haven't.

I have for years been trying to find the parents of my great grandfather, Theophilus Bates Chandler, who was born in Vermont possibly 1812. (date from cemetery). From various census I had figured maybe 1816 or thereabouts. Ages in census always seem to vary. Census showed him as T.B. Chandler, Bates Chandler, and even Chandler Bates. Dad said he WOULD NOT answer to Theophilus. If it had turned out that his mother for some reason had been named Theophilus, I could understand that he wouldn't like having the same first name as his mother. I always thought he just didn't want to be called "the awfullest" Bates Chandler. Don't suppose you might have info as to any children born to Esther Chandler Bates?

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/iUI.2ACIB/1980.1 Message Board Post: You wrote, "A gedcom on Family Search. org. reported a marriage which occurred on Jan, 8, 1804 in Chester, VT. No sources were given for the information. If there are any of you fellow researches who might be in that vicinity or have access to any records which might be relevant, I would be most appreciative of your input. The marriage was supposedly between Henry Roswell Chandler (a Wm. and Annis descendant) and Theophilus Bates. Theophilus is a common name for a male, but this is the first I have heard of it being used for a female." Yes, isn't Family Search entertaining? According to George Chandler's _The Chandler Family_, Theophilus Bates was indeed a male, and no, Vermont, though ahead of the curve on gay marriage, was not this far ahead. Theophilus, according to the book, married Henry's SISTER Esther on that date. Of Henry it says he "went as a teacher to North Carolina and died there." No further record appears in the book.
