He was born in Hamilton and moved to Kentucky and is related to my husbands side of the family. Prince William Chandler had 18 children. I don't know how many wives but based on the ancestry boards I have seen at least two. He was related somehow to one of the David Rings or maybe Reams who was a dean at Oxford University. I believe my husband is related through his mother (Peggy Ann King). This is going to be confusing since I just wrote this during a conversation so will need to find out a bit more. She said that it was her mothers(Fannie Loraine Chandler), fathers, mothers, brother. I think that would make it Fannie's great uncle??? Now without knowing names and other pieces of information I know I am not much help. We have just found his mother two days ago after 32 years of seperation so we are just trying to catch up in general much less all the genealogy with I am frothing to find out about! (that is anoth! er whole long story though and too complex to get into) If you have any information on this family I would greatly appreciate whatever you have and maybe it will help her memory and get her to find more information through her siblings. I am sure this is the same family. She also mentioned something about Oklahoma. If this sounds like we are related please email Lazyoakscottage@aol.com Thanks...Liz Butcher

    2. Hi ! Cary, You found what I also thought was my father Joe B. Chandler in 1920. The research shows this was not my father because he died before my dad. My dad was born 1899 in Spokane, WA. and died 1984 in California. Here is the death information on the Joseph B. Chandler you found. Chandler, Joseph B. died: 01-26-1954 age: 60 place: Kennewick, Benton Co. Cert. # 19 Thanks so much for looking and keeping me in mind. I do appreciate your efforts. Carey From: Famsource@aol.com [mailto:Famsource@aol.com] Sent: Friday, March 05, 2004 9:30 AM To: faemystique@acsalaska.net Subject: Chandler - Culbertson Les. Hi Carey, I have been corresponding with a man named Michael whom you have talked with over the years about the Chandler-Culbertson family lines. I have been searching for my father Joe's family for many, many years and this just might be the link. My father came to San Diego in the mid 1920s. His name is Joe Buster Chandler, b. 09/09/1899. He said he was born in Spokane, WA. where he spent his youth. I have made an exhausting search of all of Washington, Oregon and Idaho without finding a trace of him or his family. The one place I did not search was California, as he said he left WA. and came here in 1925. He married in 1930 and I have history from that point on. While searching for my Joe on the 1930 census, I ran across a Joseph "Joe" Neal Chandler, who was married to Ida Culbertson and had a daughter Bessie. I noticed that Bessie was born in Washington, so searching further, I found she was born in Everett, WA. and the family was apparently there in 1910. There is an indication from a list of the Chandler's listed in Washington in 1910, that Joseph, Ida, Joe and Bessie were of the same family. I have not been able to confirm this census report yet. I found my father in the 1930 census. It says that his parents were born in Michigan. That wouldn't be correct if he is from the Joe Neal line. I know Joe Neal was from Georgia. My father told me orally that his father was from Des Moines, Iowa, and I have seen the 1930 census stating Michigan. Something went on in his life that he blocked out most all of his childhood days and family remembrances. I tend to think that many things that he told us boys were just figments of his imagination. The fact that I have never been able to find anything on his past in Washington, leads me to think this may be his linage coming to San Diego in the mid 1920s. I have requested a look up for the 1910 census in Everett, WA. that may show this family. It was indicated that they were together in 1910. If the census shows Joe (Jr.), born in 1899, it will be one more step in the proof that I am searching for. I sure would appreciate hearing back from you Carey. Michael says you are quite an Historian on the Chandler Family lines. I wonder if you would not mind telling me something about the Chandler's & Culbertson's. I see that there were a couple of marriages into the Chandler lines. Do you know if any of the Cubertson's had RED HAIR ? Do you now if any Culbertson relatives ever lived in Eastern Washington 1900-1930 ? Have you ever heard of a Joe Chandler that lived in Eastern Washington with another family at age 11 through 18 ? Thanks again for any help, Best regards, Dave Chandler - Famsource@aol.com

So you probably have better information than I on this. The census, in which I put very little faith, did list Oscar Edson Chandler's birthplace as NY. In Phoenix, S. Whitney,_The Whitney family of Connecticut, and its affiliations : being an attempt to trace the descendants, as well in the female as the male lines, of Henry Whitney, from 1649 to 1878 : to which is prefixed some account of the Whitneys of England_(New York: Priv. print., 1878) there is information, naturally without sources, on this line. For what it is worth, it gives the birthplace of Oscar Edson Chandler as Leon, NY. (page 1644) It goes on to say he was married to Sarah Clevenger, daughter of Eli and Elizabeth (Vaughn) Clevenger on 20 June 1864 by "Esquire Harris of Putnam Co. Ohio." It says they were living at Pacific Junction Iowa, Feb. 1877. What I recall from the census was that Oscar had chi! ldren born in three or so states, and I believe I remember Iowa was one. Oscar is one of the children listed of Truman Adams Chandler and Ruth Maria Gillet. of them (page 797) it says Truman was b. Camillus, NY 18 May, 1808 and Ruth, dau. of Phylarmon and Electra (Newell) Gillet of Tinmoth, VT at East Hamburgh, NY 2 Feb., 1838. She was born Nov. 19, 1819. It says as of 1877 they were at Delphos, Ohio. Truman is said to be the son of Absalom Chandler and Polly Maria Wood. Absalom is said to have been born 14 Oct, 1776 at Goshen, NY and to have married Polly in 1807 at Camillus. It says they settled in Canada, but returned to Buffalo when the War of 1812 broke out and he served in the U S Army through the war. He's said to be the son of Abram, and Sarah Chandler, of whom no more information is given. Polly is said to be the dau. of Nathan and Zilpha (Sprague) Wood.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/iUI.2ACIB/2007.1.2.1 Message Board Post: The Edson Chandler in the census is listed as born May, 1900 (in the 1900 census, taken in June, 1900). At that time he was in Central City, Merrick, NE. You have SS information [SSDI: Name: EDSON CHANDLER SSN: 507-03-4253 Last Residence: 68826 Central City, Merrick, NE Born: 22 May 1900 ]. If that is the Edson you are interested in, it would seem a pretty good match. The census, working backward in time, has this information (keep in mind that the census is almost always contradictory in some details from one to the next). 1920--Central City, Merrick, NE. The household of Charles F. Chandler, age 53, born in Indiana, father b. NY, mother born U.S. He's a carpenter. He's married to Celestia C., age 47, born in Canada as were both parents. Daughter Carrie J., 23 and son Edison (sic), 19, both b. NE. 1910--Central City. Charles (L?). This time has both parents b. IN as is Charles. Wife Celestia is listed as immigrating in 1875 ( in 1900 census it was 1873. Carrie and Edson (this time spelled Edson) are there. Other information substantially as in 1920 except occupation appears to be "restaurant" (difficult to read). 1900 Weeping Water Pct, Cass County, NE. Charles F., born Oct. 1866 Indiana, both parents Ohio. Celestia C., b. Sep. 1871 (I may have read it incorrectly or it may have been reported or written down incorrectly). They had been married four years. Carry J., Nov. 1896, "Babe" May, 1900. There's no census for 1890 of course. 1880 Eight Mile Grove, Cass Co., NE There's an O. F. Chandler, age 40, born in NY, Parents both NY. He's married to "Juraldine" age 25, obviously not his first wife as he has a 15 year old son, William. Second son is Charley F. age 13, father b. NY, mother Ohio. I believe this is almost certainly Charles F. Chandler, father of Edson. In the 1900 census O. F. Chandler is listed as Oscar (wife's name is now spelled Geraldine.) His birthdate is listed as Oct. 1842 and birthplace as NY, father's as NY, mother's as VT. As I said in the previous message, in 1870 Oscar's wife is Sarah E., born in Ohio. The census was taken by people who went from house to house and asked questions--at least they were supposed to. There are stories of enumerators who just asked the neighbors or anyone they could find. In any case, they were sometimes semi-literate judging by what they wrote, and they wrote down what they thought they heard and spelled as best they could. (The best example I know of is when I was trying to find a man listed in the census by his first initial, "M." It turned out that's what the census taker heard, but the man's name was Emerson and he was called "Em.") The person giving the information may not have known all the facts. In following a family it has been my experience that there is virtually always some disagreement from one census to another, but a big picture does emerge, and some facts, such as place of residence, are fairly certain to be correct. I don't know if this is your Edson--it's just what I could dig out of the census.

Edson appears in the census from 1900 on. In 1900 his birthdate is given as May 1900 and he seems not to have been named yet as he's listed as "Babe." (That census was taken in June, so he was a newborn.) There is, as seems always the case, contradictory information from one census to the next. His father's birthplace is given as Indiana consistently when Edson is found in the father's household. Edson's father is, I believe, Oscar Chandler, born (according to the census) in NY in Oct. 1842. Oscar moved around a lot. He had children born in Michigan, Indiana, Iowa and Nebraska. In 1870, when Charles F. Chandler's mother was still alive, he was in Bronson, Branch Co., MI and married to Sarah E., age 23 born in Ohio. By 1880 Sarah had died--I guess--and he was married to a Geraldine (or Juraldine as it is in the 1880 census). I have a page of notes scribbled from the census for 1870, 1880, 1900, 1910 and 1920 that gives more detail, but since I don't know if this is what you're interested in I won't write it all out now.
