Greetings, I have vols. 1 and 2 of George Calvin Waldreps "Halifax County (Virginia) Cemeteries." These 2 vols. contain the names and locations of over 300 cemeteries located in Halifax County Virginia. The books contain inscriptions from gravestones found in these 300 plus graveyards. Information containing surname, given name, date of birth, date of death, etc. was copied from the graves. Mr. Waldrep stated in Vol. 2 that he had info on about 80 more cemeteries in Halifax Co., that he did not get to cover, so these two books do not cover all cemeteries in Halifax Co Va.------------------------------------ I also have a booklet :"Tombstone Inscriptions taken from Private Cemeteries In Halifax County, Virginia vol. 1" Compiled by Kenneth Harvey Cook. The date on the booklet is November 1969. The booklet is 40 pages long, and contains info on about 54 cemeteries. The cemeteries tend to be small. In this booklet, I found about 9 cemeteries not covered in George Calvin Waldreb IIIs "Halifax Co. (VA) Cemeteries" books. Also included in my file, is info from about 800 Afro-American Obits from Halifax Co., VA. which I copied. I will do surname lookups. In order to not clog up this list for those not interested, I will not answer requests posted to this list. Please, send your requests to me at: lchand3835@aol.com Larry ============================================================ SEARCHING HALIFAX CO. Seeking information pertaining to the Chandler family of Montgomery Co., NC. The information I have is rather sketchy and based primarily on the census records for that area in the years between 1850 and 1900: Montgomery Co., NC, 1850: Henry Chandler, 35, laborer, NC Catherine, 25, F, NC William S, 15, M, laborer, NC Martha Jane, 13, F, NC Winny, 6, F, NC Duggin, 2, M, NC John, 2/12, M, NC Fork District, Montgomery Co., NC, 1860: Henry Chandler, 59, M, miner Catherine Chandler, 30/31, F Douglas, 14, M John S, 12, M Susan, 2, F After 1860, Henry and Catherine disappear from the area. Henry may have died, and Catherine may have remarried. Of the children, the only one I have found still living in the area is my direct ancestor John S. Chandler, listed on the 1870 census thru to the 1900 census as living in Eldorado, Montgomery Co., NC. John is shown in the marriage bond information below as marrying Susanah Hambleton/Hambelton, but I suspect she was a Hamilton, as there do not appear to be any Hambleton/Hambelton families in the general area. That census gives reported dates of birth, and these are Sidney, Dec. 1868; Mary, May, 1870; Harry, Oct., 1891; Lewis, May, 1893; Lyle, May, 1897. They had been married 9 years. All the children were born in Iowa. If they were born in Sioux County they ought to be in the records which are available on microfilm from the Family History Library > Birth records, 1880-1928; index 1880-1917 > Authors Sioux County (Iowa). You didn't ask about parents, but Sidney seems to be the Sidney in the 1880 census in the household of A(bner) L. Chandler. Abner was in Wheeler, Sac, Iowa at that time. In 1900 it is reported that he was born in PA (as were both his parents) in April 1845. In 1870 Abner L. Chandler was in Libertyville, Lake Co., IL with wife Henrietta and son Sidney. Perhaps you will find birth records for Sidney and marriage records for Abner and Henrietta there, although Henrietta was also born in PA so it may be they were married in PA not IL. From what I saw at the FHL catalog though, it may be that there will be no records for Sidney's birth there. Apparently you have this from some source though. Both Rootsweb's WorldConnect and the LDS ancestral file have ancestors for Abner, but they do not have primary sources noted, only references to other webpages, etc. At one point these trees jump from Woodstock, Windham, CT to PA. That's possible, but I'm skeptical. Perhaps you know all about this.
