I am a literary scholar research the life of mystery writer Raymond Thornton Chandler and have just begun digging into his genealogy. He was born July 23, 1888 in Chicago, IL and died March 26, 1959 in La Jolla, California. He was the only son of Maurice Benjamin Chandler (I've also seen it as Morris B. Chandler), born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania of Irish Quaker stock, and Florence Dart, an Irish immigrant. Maurice Chandler apparently attended the University of Pennsylvania and later made a career as an engineer, working for railroad companies out of Chicago. Has anyone on the list made a genealogical connection to Raymond Thornton Chandler and/or Maurice Benjamin Chandler? Any information on their ancestors would be a great help. I'd be happy to share what documents I have turned up already (e.g. military service records, death certificate, etc.) with anyone who is interested in them. Thanks, Robert F. Moss

Hello All, again, As it happens, I am doubly blessed with Chandler ancestors. On my father's side, I am a descendent of Hester Chandler, who married Jonathan Gage the son of John Gage of Ipswich, Massachusetts on 12 November 1667. According to a deed recorded in Ipswich, Vol. 4, page 333, "the widow of Jonathan Gage married John Wilson of Elizabethtown, NJ and no further record of this family appears in Massachusetts. The daughter of Jonathan and Hester, Naomi Gage, married Stephen Bedford in New Jersey. For more information on this line, visit my web site at: http://www.jps.net/msvnhrn Click on The Van Hornes and Bedford. Please let me know if you have information on Hester Chandler's ancestors. Thanks, Marleen Van Horne
Hello All, More on Willis Chandler. Yesterday, I found an entry on Ancestry.com indicating there was a Willis Chandler in the 1790 Federal Census for Kentucky. I am not a member, so I could not pull up the record. I went to the genealogy library, and could not find a Willis Chandler in the Kentucky reconstructed census indices. My g-grandfather was Willis Chandler White, born about 1848 in Kemper County, Mississippi. His grandfather was Willis Chandler White born about 1790 in Kentucky. It seems, that somewhere along the line, a daughter of Willis Chandler married into the White Family. If there was a Willis Chandler living in Kentucky in 1790, it is a pretty good bet that either his daughter or sister may have been the mother of Willis Chandler White I. Based on family legend, I think the Whites and Chandlers came from Virginia. The daughter or sister may have been Alice Chandler, and the man she married may have been John W. White. As you can see, I am grasping at straws. I have some other information, as yet unverified that indicates the Whites may have come from Charlotte County, Virginia, and that is next to Halifax County, so there might be a connection. Any help here would be greatly appreciated. Marleen Van Horne http://www.jps.net/msvnhrn Researching WHITE and CHANDLER in Kentucky and Virginia.

Hi Everyone, I am looking for any information on Lewis E. (Ed) CHANDLER. I have him in 1910 in Liberty Twp, Clay Co., Missouri. The census indicates that Lewis was born in Iowa and his age was 39. He is there with his wife, Clara NICOLA, age 27 and born in Riverside, Washington County, Iowa and their daughters (my ggrandmother) Frances, age 7, born in Iowa and Eva, age 5, born in Missouri. They also had a son Lewis that was born abt 1915 in Missouri. Lewis and Clara were married in May of 1901 in Clay Co., Missouri. I next find Clara and the children in Alva, Woods Co. OK. in 1920. She indicates at that time that she is a widow. Would very much like to correspond with anyone researching my CHANDLERS. Thank You, Mike Cattin [email protected]

Estelle, Sorry it's taken so long for me to get my ducks back in a row. I've been in and out of town so much lately. You wrote...that I wrote... <<I, too, have a Shadrack M. Chandler, who was the son of Samuel Chandler and Elizabeth??? (we think Lisbon). Samuel was born in Rockingham, Harrisburg, VA in 1803 d. 25 Sept 1882 and b. Old Amite Bapt. Church, Livingston Parrish, LA.>> I've check the information I furnished to you (Feb 28, March 3, 5 & 8) several different times, and can't fine where I said Shadrack was son of Samuel and Elizabeth Lisbon??? If I did, it was an error and I did furnish you info that said Shadrack had several brothers and sisters...and was the son of Samuel Chandler and Annie Efferson, and that Samuel was the son of Samuel and Elizabeth (we think Lisbon). I, too, have the information from the book that I copied...and the story on the Kinchens and others...while in Salt Lake City. thanks for the offer. My records show that two sisters married Mintons, and that Elizabeth md. Kinchen Stewart on 19 Dec. 1841 and she died 12 Oct 1902. My records show that Martha Malinda md. Elbert Stewart in 1849...she died 1888. Also, Adeline Tucker, wife of Shadrack Chandler, is the daughter of Beza Tucker and Mary Kinchen......another Kinchen. I don't show a Mahaly Chandler, but do show a Mary M. Chandler b. 16 Aug 1843 and d. 2 Feb1900. She md. J. W. Minton. Let me know if this is wrong. I have a census somewhere, but no documented info other than that and family histories that my grandmother wrote from "word of mouth." Thanks. Mary Phillips Orlando, FL
