    3. Jesse Chandler of Henry and Franklin Co., VA (continued from 12/1/98 message) (Part two) If you are a Chandler descendant, you should look into the Chandler Family Association (CFA). This association is an excellent organization that focuses on Chandler Family genealogy research and publishes professional research in their Newsletter (three per year). They have traced the lineage of John Chandler (landed at Jamestown in 1610). The history has progressed to a time in the early 1800s and more research is published with each issue of the Newsletter. It should be noted that there were more than one group of Chandlers that immigrated to this country and that the CFA research addresses the group that descended from John Chandler. They have also published a family index that contains over 65,000 names. I you want more information, please contact Gayle Keough (e-mail Sec) at [email protected] and ask for information (be sure to ask about back issues of the newsletter). Two different Jesse Chandlers are noted in the CFA research in their newsletter. Additionally their special publication "Chandlers in the American Revolution VA - NC - SC - GA lists 5 Individuals named Jesse Chandler (not all were Revolution Veterans) who were alive in the period of the Revolution. This list of 5 includes the two mentioned as being outlined in the earlier Newsletters. Of the two Jesses profiled in the CFA newsletter, only one appears to have the possibility to be the Franklin Co. Jesse under discussion. The Newsletter (June 1994) is quoted: "Jesse [Joell, Robt., Robt., John] was born ca 1726 in Henrico Co., Va In 1754 he was in Cumberland Co., VA (WB1, p100) and on the Cumberland Co. 1759 Tithe List. & by 1770 Pittsylvania Co. Tithe list. In 1793 he appears in Henry Co. records (DB5, p56) as "Jesse Chandler of S.C.". In the U.S. Census of 1790, 1800, & 1810 Jesse appears in Greenville Co, SC. Neither Jesse's wife or children's names are known. He may have died after 1810 in Greenville Co., SC. The SC wills for two contemporary Jesse Chandlers, one in Abbeville Co. (d. 1804 and one in Richland County, SC." I should be noted, that in 1790 maps, Henry Co. and Franklin Co., VA are adjacent - Franklin to the north and Henry to the south on the NC border. The combined north/south size is about 50 miles. Henry was the wider of the two and is about 75 miles wide.. In 1791, Henry is split to form an additional county named Patrick. At this point Henry is only about 25 miles wide. A Jesse Chandler does appear in the 1810 Franklin Co., VA census. (41210-1100100). This indicates that the oldest male is age 21-45 and oldest female is over 45. It should be noted that the 1800 US census for this area does not exist. Who is this Jesse Chandler? There are a number of documents that were gathered by Mrs. Sigmon that seem to indicate that it may have been the Henry Co. Jesse. Facts against this premise are that the 1793 deed mentioned by the CFA does call him "Jesse Chandler of S.C. This does not absolutely mean that they are not the same Jesse, he may have moved to SC and later back to Franklin Co. The 1810 census age recordings also seem to indicate that the Franklin Co. Jesse was not old enough to have been the Jesse that was appointed Lt. of Militia in Henry Co. in 1777. At this point I will quit. I will continue in the next part with documents relating to the Franklin Jesse and his descendants. It may be after the weekend before I continue with part 3. Dr. H. 3. Hello, I am new to this list and must enter with a very sparce posting. I have a Bridgett A. Chandler who married a William Stevens. (his father was also a William, H. is what I think the middle initial was.) Both were born in Iowa, I would guess in the late 1860s to early 1870's. They had a son in 1892 in St. Louis, Mo. I am told that both Bridgett and William died relatively young. That is all that I know. I am hoping someone might be able to send me in a direction other than the wall I am facing. I realize this is not much to go on, but I thank you for what direction you might be able to provide. LynD

    3. Recently, I responded to a request for information concerning Jesse Chandler of VA. The request was posted via [email protected] and I responded by the same vehicle. This has led to several additional people requesting information. Since this seems to be a subject that interests a small group, I decided that rather than answer on an individual basis, I would summarize what I know about this Jesse and put it on the web for those interested both now and in the future. The explanation of how I happen to have this information, the volumn of the information, the necessity to sort it and then summarize same will take a little time. So, I will place it on the web in several parts. If you want a copy of any of the referenced documents, please ask. Some of the documents are photo copies of ledger size documents and I only have a home size copy machine which is to small. However, I will attempt to reduce the size of the documents or copy them in segments if necessary. ON WITH THE STORY----- Jesse Chandler of Henry and Franklin Co., VA (Part one) Over several years, I have been attempting to discover the parents of Thompson Chandler, my oldest known Chandler ancestor. Almost everything is known after his marriage in Giles Co., VA in July 25, 1831. A copy of his marriage certificate exists and a bible of one his 11 Children, lists his birth as Feb. 11, 1811. In several post 1850 census documents, Thompson lists his birthplace as VA. Thompson died in Kanawha Co., WV in 1877 after having lived a number of years in Giles Co., VA and Monroe Co., (VA/WV) before moving to Kanawha Co. One of my older relatives, Wilma Gardman, had searched for years without success (in an era before computers) to locate Thompson's parents. I have many of her notes. About two years ago, I dove into genealogy as a hobby (I am retired) using many resources, but mainly my computer and numerous Family Tree Maker CDs and the local Fairfax VA genealogy reading room. I have made a great many advances, but not with identifying Thompson's parents. As part of my analysis, I started with the assumption that he was born in VA, probably within a 100 miles or so from the Giles Co. location where he was married. I looked to the 1810 census (he was born in 1811) to identify any Chandlers in that SW VA area who could have been his parents. There were only three possibilities (I thought) and two of the three were only remote possibilities. The third was Jesse Chandler. Seemingly in corroboration, a Moses Chandler (son of Jesse) lived in Giles Co. during the few years before and after Thompson's marriage. Because of his young age, Moses could not have been Thompson's father, but could have been his brother. At this point, while writing to local Genealogy groups in the Giles area, I was told of a Franklin County genealogist named Edith McGhee Sigmond. Convinced that Jesse was the father or at least an uncle of my Thompson, I hired Mrs. Sigmon to research Thompson with a particular emphasis on Jesse. She did a fantastic job and sent me well over a hundred pages of photocopies of book pages, wills, legal documents and registers, marriage certificates and other documents. Many of the documents concerned Jesse and his descendants. At this point, before I outline what I know about Jesse, I must say that the research confirmed to me that there was no close (if any) connection between Jesse or Moses and Thompson. I must also tell you that I have found another possibility that I am exploring. I found a marriage between a William Chandler and Polly Harris in 1809 in Patrick Co., VA. This William never appears in a census (I have several theories why). I surmise that this William was the son of another William Chandler just across the adjacent border in Surry/StokesCo., NC. This is another story that I am working on. Now that I have given the background about how I happen to have a lot of information on Jesse Chandler of Henry and Franklin Co. VA in the period before and after 1800, I will summarize the information I have in my possession. This information will follow in a later message (i.e., I have not written it yet). 3. Hi, I'm still searching for any information on Earl A. CHANDLER. The only information I have is that he was born in St. Louis, Missouri about 1901-1902. He lived in Colorado in 1928-1930. He disappeared after that. I have searched the social security death index and found two Earl Chandlers. One lived in Texas and one in California where they both died. Does anyone know if one of these two CHANDLERS could possibly be the one I'm looking for? Please let me know. Thanks so much. Susan (should be Chandler).

Following are their known children and spouses (other children were possibly born before 1832). Elizabeth 1832 OH Samuel Rankin 1834 OH m. Emily Taylor PITCOCK Margaret 1837 OH Martha 1839 OH m. Thomas STEPHENS Susan Rebecca 1841 IL Mary Ellen 1845 IL m. Greenberry WHITECOTTON. The earliest known record on Mary Ellen CHANDLER is her enumeration as Ellen RICHARDSON, head of household, in the 1850 Williamson Co., IL census indicating she was 45 years old and born in PA. The death certificate of Mary Ellen (Richardson) WHITECOTTON identified her parents as James RICHARDSON and Mary Ellen CHANDLER. Any leads would be greatly appreciated. 2. Tom, Ii feel like I have gotten an early Christmas present!! I would love a hard copy of your data and I can either post my address or I can send you a SASE and check to defray expense of copying. Does your info mention Jesse's parents? I have his wife's name as Sarah. Any information is greatly appreciated. Obviously theeChandler Family Association is using the deed that I mentioned in my original post. Perhaps Jesse did live in SC for a short while. There is 11 years between this land transfer and Lucinda's birth. plenty of time for a re-location. Since his son Moses is listed as being in Giles County in the 1800's and Lucinda was married there in 1833. It seem probable that the family move to GIles or lived nearthe border of Franklin . Perhaps Thompson was a nephew of Jesse's who he raised. We too often miss that connection. Lucinda was married in Giles to Levi Vaught who was 7 years her junior. I have picture of her although it is a poor one. They both died in Mercer County WV where they moved later in life. She died 6 days after her husband of Cholera. They had 5 children 3 sons Ransom, Rufus and Augustus and 2 daus. Ellen and Mary. I descend from there son Ransom who married his first cousin Sally M. Vaught. Have you found any link to the Farguson family? In the 1860 Giles County census in Levi's and Lucinda's home there is a Robert Farigisom living wiht them. I figure that is may be a maternal grandfather? Do you have other Giles County connections? I am looking forward to hearing from you. If you would prefer to Post the abstracts that would work for me although it is a lot of work for you. Isn't it great that someone can benefit from your research even though it did not pan out for you? I know I have ahd tht Happen to me and it makes me feel as though my work was not wasted.

    2. Hello Tom, Your information on Jesse Chandler was most interesting to me, as it covers the same time frame and general locations of my own personal 'brick wall'... I would like to know if your Chandler material mentions a JOEL CHANDLER who lived in Lunenburg Co., VA, before the Revolutionary War, and later lived in Greenville Co., SC. I descend from his daughter, Millandra Chandler, who married Moses Sullivan, son of Charles Sullivan, both of whom gave service from Greenville Co. during the Revolution. JOEL, as well as Moses, Charles, and several dozen more, are listed on a DAR monument in Greenville County. Also mentioned are Solomon and Shadrack Chandler. There are so many Joel Chandlers of the appropriate age range in and around Lunenburg County, and I have not been able to pinpoint his parents. He did sign a proclamation in this county at the beginning of the War...something about British money no longer usable within their county, I believe. This is confirmed by information given in Greenville County which states he was the same individual who signed the VA proclamation. I realize this is grasping at straws, but I am reduced to desperate measures with this Chandler!
