I am fascinated with the correspondence about Hannah on the Chandler line. I have come to a brick wall on searching my ancestors in Peabody and Andover. So many of her family names seem similar to those I am seeking but I see no connection.Perhaps if I tell you what I have you may know someone who does. My mother was born Elsie May Chandler. Her father was George Bartlett Chandler born Jan 16,1861 in South Danvers, Mass. His first wife was Julia Annie Beckford[my grandmother] and his second Annie C. Blanchard. He had a sister Francis b.1854, a sister Anne b.1856 {she lived in New Boston N.H.] and a sister Mary Campbell Chandler who raised my mother on Andover St. Peabody. George's father was Samuel Chase Chandler born February 22,1827 in Randoph, Mass.Died in Peabody March 2,1895. Samuels wife was Mary Fairfield born 1828 in South Danvers..died Dec.12,1917 age 89 at 82 Andover St. Peabody where my mother was raised. Samuel's father was Danforth Chandler and his mother Hannah Madden. Danforth Chandler was baptized in Quincy, lived in Randolph until he was apparently warned out and then we lose track of him. His father was Joshua Spriggs Chandler and his mother Relief. His wife Hannah Madden. Joshua Spriggs Chandler was born May 2,1784 baptized in Quincy Christ Church' His father was William Chandler and his mother Susanna Spriggs.Joshua and Relief had Danforth, John and Samuel. William Chandler was born about 1759 ,married Dec. 1 in Hartford, Conn. and died Nov.9,1809 in Quincy, Mass. I do not have the name of his parents'He and Susanna had 7 children: Joshua,Mary,Susanna, William,Sarah,Frederic, and Ebenezer. So..who is this elusive Hannah Chandler in the area of my later Chandlers and could she somehow be a distant cousin. Did her Chandler's bring my Chandlers into the area to meet their wives? Questions. Questions. Questions. That is what genealogy is all about I guess!Wild speculation but hope for a tie in. Thank you for bearing with me. It's nice to hear about all you CHANDLER's searching for kin folks back to 1600's. Makes me kinda envious. I have been searching for any information on my father's family only back to 1899 without any connections. Help ! If anyone has any information on any Chandler family living in the state of Washington in 1899, I am looking for a CHANDLER son who says he left his father John J. Chandler's home at the age of eight ( 1907) . His mother (no name) died about 1902/3. The only record of a JOE/JOSEPH B. CHANDLER found so far is on the 1920 Pacific County, WA. census which states Joseph B. Chandler age 25 b. Illinois, father b. Indiana mother b. Iowa. Would anyone know if this might be the same Joe as my father who claimed to be b. 09/09/1899 at Spokane, WA. ? Sure would like some help from all you knowledgeable Chandler's out there. Hi all I live in Australia, and have enjoyed the list, but almost all are looking in the US. My interests are in Sussex, before 1860s then in Australia. Anyone else? Cheers Bronwyn ---------------------- Bronwyn King ACT Australia -----------------------
Just to confuse things a bit can you help with my Hannah Chandler. The in formation I have is as follows: Hannah Chandler b. 1704 d. 1779 m 4 Jun 1729 Timothy Ballard b. d. 30 Oct 1773 All of Andover, MA. Hannah was the daub of John and Hannah (Rye) Chandler Family records, The Chandler Family by Geo. Chandler, 1883 and Ballard Genealogy by Fallow. Any help on this Chandler branch? Thanks, Diana
Dear Mary Lou, RE: I am looking for information on the birth of Hannah >Chandler who >married Daniel Bixby Dec 2, 1674 inAndover, Mass. She died Nov,20 1730 in >Andover. >Her parents were Capt Thomas and Hannah Brewer. Who also married in >Andover. >However I can't find her birth and I am not to sure they married in Andover >as I can't find that either. Both her parents died there. and Hannah Brewer >was born there. So I believe they were married there but I haven't found >any proof of it or of her birth. == I am slightly confused; Was Chandler Hannah's maiden name (note above: her parents were Capt Thomas and Hannah Brewer and she married Daniel Bixby.) One of my ancestors is Joseph Chandler who was born in Andover, MA in 1682 and who had a sister named Hannah, but their parents were William and Mary (ne:Dane) Chandler; they were married in 1658. William Chandler, whose birthdate I do not have, had a brother named Thomas (and a sister named Hannah). Both Hannah and Thomas seem to have been popular family names in the Chandler family during that period. I am not sure if I have any information that will help you, but if you could clear up my confusion about Capt Thomas (Chandler or Brewer) and Hannah (Brewer/Chandler - birth/married name?), maybe I could add a little information to help your search. Sincerely, Betty
Hi, This is my first time to see some of the Chandlers that I have. I show Hannah Brewer who married Thomas Chandler born About 1630 in Andover, Mass. died 25 Oct. 1717 Andover, Mass. married Thomas Chandler 1650. Hope this helps. Zelma
Hi: Thats is my problem. I had the film of Andover Vital Records. That gives William son of Thamas & Hannah Chandler born May 28, 1659. It says absolutely nothing about a daugater also born that day. Also Thomas a son of Thomas and hanna Chandler died 6 June 1654 in a hand writing later on it says Thomas son of thomas & hanna Chandler born Oct 9th 1664. They had two Thomas the first born Oct 2, 1652. thats the one who died 6-June 1954. In the Printed virsion of Andover Vital Records by Topsfield Historical Society 1912 Is the following. Henry May 28, 1667 Joseph Aug 3, 1669 Sara Dec 20, 1661 Thomas Oct 2, 1652 Thomas Oct 9, 1664 William May 28, 1659 In Marriages Hannah and Daniel Bigsbie Dec 2, 1674. There are other marriages but I don't right handy have which one to connect them to to see if they are there. Deaths give Thomas the s. 6-6-1659 Capt Thomas Jan 15,1702/3 Hannah wid of capt Thomas 10-25-1717 lots of others. There is absolutely no mention of Hannah Chandler's birth in either Andove Vital Record. Thats why I am looking for it. Under the Baxby Hannah wid of Daniel died Nov. 30 1730. The marriage is also listed in American Marriage Records before 1699. By Clemens 1977. 2 Dec 1674 in Andover, Mass. So there seams to be conflicting infomation out there. Thats why I am looking for the proof. If anyone can help will appreciate it and share what I have copies of from film and books. To those of you discussing Hannah Chandler of Ipswich, Mass., I have an ancestor Hester Chandler, also of Ipswich, who married Jonathan Gage on 12 November 1667. Could Hester be a sister of Hannah? While the Gage line goes back to 1072, I no nothing about Hester's parents. Any help would be appreciated. Marleen Van Horne

Jesse Chandler of Henry and Franklin Co., VA (continued from 12/12/98 message) (Part six) This will be the last part of the Jesse Chandler series. I have told you most of what I know about Jesse and made an educated guess about where he came from. I have gradually come to realize that I have not been paying enough attention to historical time lines as related to geography and in relation to the people involved. In this mornings message I mentioned several census records that were missing and thus could explain some anomalies. Later it occurred to me that I should review the formation of the counties, both in time and location vis-a-vis Jesse and my Thompson (I think Thompson is a son of a William). Guess what? Franklin was formed from Henry Co. in 1786 - I wonder where Jesse's land was located. Patrick was also formed from part of Henry 1791. Henry was formed from Bedford in 1777. Stokes NC was formed from Surry NC in 1789 and Surry from Rowan in 1771. All of this is in the area and time we are looking at. Put this information together with the missing census documents and it causes real confusion. In this message, I will track a few of his children and finish with some random facts and dates that were gathered by the Franklin Co. genealogist, Mrs. Sigmon. The random facts were among the many documents she sent me as we were trying to establish my Thompson Chandler's parents and VA county of birth. As I have said in earlier messages, there seems to be no direct connection between Jesse and Thompson, although I would bet that Jesse may have been a great uncle or cousin or some relative not in the direct descendant line. I will try to give a reference for the random facts, but if I do not list them, it is because I do not know. All of the facts come from printed books or documents in a Franklin County or Roanoke library. First, Jesse's children. I can only track one fairly well and a second a little bit and the others not at all. Of the children, I mentioned in Jesse's estate documents, I have found a good track for Moses and a mention of Jerusha. PLEASE NOTE: according to the book Virginia Genealogy, p. 28, "To receive a license, persons had to give bond with sufficienty security (usually $150) that there was no lawful reason why the marriage couldn't take place. The bondsman was usually a family member related to either the bride or the groom." Moses Chandler was born in Franklin County, Va about 1805. He married Elizabeth W. Jesse Chandler of Henry and Franklin Co., VA (continued from 12/9/98 message) (Part five) PLEASE NOTE!! ADDENDUM 1. Reference 1810 census. I had previously mentioned that the 1800 US census for VA had been destroyed. In sorting through the many papers I have filed somewhat haphazardly, I found a reference that the Patrick & Henry (plus a few others) counties., 1810 census had been lost (War of 1812 destruction in Washington). The Franklin census was not destroyed. I also found a page from the census index maintained in the local library that I had forgotten. In the listings, it shows Jesse as 11001-41210-00. This listing is a transposition of the male and female columns I quoted earlier which were (obtained from WFT census listings) 41210-110100. The significance of this changed listing, is that if the library listing is the correct listing, then Jesse was 46 or up in age in 1810 and could have been the Jesse who entered the militia in Henry Co. in 1777, and if we believe the WFT listing, then he would have been too young. Although I have a microfilm print of Jesse in the 1820 census, I apparently did not make a copy of the 1810 census page since the number listings were printed in the index book. Do any you have a micro film copy of the 1810 Franklin census to check which version is correct? It may not prove anything, but all clues help. ADDENDUM 2. Another found reference - Page from the Franklin Co. Tax lists for 1786. This report says it is a substitute for the Franklin County census report of 1790 from which the County was omitted. The tax lists show 3 Chandlers - Daniel, Thomas, and William. Jesse is not listed, so we know that he did not arrive in Franklin before this date. This listing helps explain the number of Franklin County marriages (before 1800) that I mentioned in part three. The information I had promised for message five (supposed to be the final message on Jesse) I will put in message six. Sorry for the confusion. Tom Dr. H. Jesse Chandler of Henry and Franklin Co., VA (continued from 12/7/98 message) (Part four) Note: In my last message I failed to list one pre 1800 marriage in the area. This was Robert Chandler to Judah Brown in Surry Co., SC (just across the border and adjacent to Henry Co., VA The following Jesse Chandlers were recorded in the U.S. Census noted (from FTM census index CDs) 1790 Jesse, NewCastle Co., DE Jesse, Newberry Dist. SC Jesse, Rutland Co., VT 1800 Jesse, Newberry Dist. It also shows that by his age over 45, Jesse was born (1820 minus 45 = 1775) by 1775 or before. Jesse is alive in August, 1828 as shown by a bill of sale for cattle, household goods and fodder, to his son Moses.Jesse is listed in the document as Jesse Chandler of Franklin Co. A document (Franklin will book 3, page 160) dated March 18, 1829 is an inventory and appraisment of Jesse's property. It mentions that he is deceased, therefore he must have died in late 1828 or early 1829. A document (Franklin will book 3, page 386) dated July 12, 1831, seems to be a final accounting of the estate of Jesse and the money paid to various individuals from the proceeds from the sale of the land. Among the individuals mentioned are Elizabeth Chandler, Lucy Chandler, Jerusha Chandler, Moses Chandler, Sarah Chandler and Henry Hodges (Note: Moses married Elizabeth Hodges in 1825, a record of Moses and Elizabeth and the Hodges family can be found on a FTM CD). A document/Indenture (Henry County Deed Book 5, p 14,) dated January 21, 1793, shows a Jesse Chandler of the State of South Carolina selling 100 acres of land to James Spencer. (NOTE the SC designation). A document (bill of sale - Franklin Co.) dated August 12, 1828 between Jesse of Franklin Co. and Mose who is mentioned as his heir. A document (Deed Book 15, p. 41) dated Dec. 3, 1836, between Moses Chandler of Franklin Co. and Ellison Chavers(?) Indenture....."It being one eight part of the lands and personal estate which Sally Chandler Widow and relic(?) of Jesse Chandler Dec. late of Franklin holds as dower estate in the Estate of Jesse Chandler. A document (Deed Book 18, p. 440)dated Sept. 7, 1844 between Jerusha Chandler of Franklin Co......granted and sold unto Charles W. Ashworth all his interest in the tract of land allotted to Sally Chandler widow and relict(?) of Jesse Chandler......being one seventh part.. Jesse Chandlers estate. Note: I was unsure of where to place the following item in the sequence of documents and I am not sure of the origin. It is a page from a book that I can not identify, but perhaps some of you will recognize the item. At the top of the page is the page number 8 and a title "Gone to Georgia." The page is composed of 4 numbered paragraphs 12 to 15. Each paragraph is about a different individual. Paragraph 14 is titled Solomon Chandler 200010-10100-5. I will quote the first half of the paragraph which contains information that may be relevant to our discussion of Jesse. "The Chandler family from Southside Virginia, arrived in South Carolina before the Revolution; among its members was Shadrack, born in Lunenburg County, Va., c1756. (NATIONAL GENEALOGICAL QUARTERLY, March, 1945, p.27; Stewart, 1800 Pendleton, p. 52) Parkes Chandler (No. 962) was one of the first settlers in Jackson County. Shadrack moved from Newberry district, S.C. to Greenville District, S.C., after the war; in 1790, those enumerated in Newberry included Bailey (No. 554 below), James, Jesse, Johnathan, and two John Chandlers. Parkes Chandler was granted headright land in Oglethorpe County, Ga., during the 1790s but did not remain there long. Solomon K. Chandler was in Greenville District 1790-1800. THE PARAGRAPH CONTINUES with other information and refers to other numbered paragraphs. FACTS There was a Jesse Chandler in Henry Co. VA ( as shown by Henry document listings).in the period 1777 through 1782. There is no record of him in the area from this time until he appears on other Henry listings in 1790-91-92. There was a Jesse Chandler in the Newberry Dist. SC in the 1790 and 1800 census, but no Jesse in VA in either the 1790 or 1800 census (he may have been present for the 1800 VA census, but this census was destroyed). There are three Jesses in SC in the 1810 census and one Jesse in Franklin Co. VA, however the age ranges in the show the oldest male as under 45 (perhaps the mark was placed in the wrong column, since the oldest female, probably his wife is listed over 45). A 1793 Henry Co. deed lists a Jesse Chandler of SC. There are no Chandler marriages in Henry Co. before 1800 in spite of the presence of a number of male Chandlers (shown in documents deeds - Robert, Joseph, Jesse, Thomas)., however many Chandlers were married in Franklin Co. during this period (Benjamin, Daniel, Shadrack, Thomas, William - plus in Patrick Co. an Issac). A fact unlisted above (my oversight) is that a Bailey Chandler is mentioned (1805) the Henry Co. General Index to ended law.... It is a fact that the article about Solomn Chandler in SC quoted above also mentions a Baily Chandler - I wonder if they are the same. MY CONCLUSION (EDUCATED GUESS) A Jesse Chandler was present in Henry Co., VA as early as 1777. This Jesse probably moved to SC in the period between 1782 and 1790. This Jesse, or possibly a son of the same Jesse also named Jesse, moved back to Franklin Co. VA in 1790. If he arrived late in 1790, he may have missed being counted in the census. In either circumstance, the Franklin Co. Jesse is either the son of Joell Chandler as listed in the CFA documents or he is the grandson of Joell. Note: Once again I made this part too long, but it is difficult to know what to leave out. I have told you my conclusions and I will do one more part in a few days to give additional information on a few of Jesse's children and grand children, plus some random information about other Chandlers that may or may not be part of this group. Your guess is as good as mine - What is your theory about the VA Jesse Chandler. Please let me know. Tom Dr. H. Looking for any information whatsoever about Malinda Chandler (Born - about 1820 South Carolina (according to census), Died - Itasca, Hill Co., Texas) married Joseph Melton Pruitt (Born - 1819 Abbeville County, South Carolina, Died - 5 Mar 1891 Itasca, Hill Co., Texas) on 17 Feb 1842 in Benton County, Alabama. The Benton County, Alabama Chandlers who could be her father were John Chandler (born 1780-1790) and Richard Chandler (born 1790-1800). Possible brothers were Tyre Chandler (Born - 1815 South Carolina), Emory Chandler (Born - 1810 South Carolina) and James Chandler (Born - 1806 South Carolina). There were a lot of Chandlers in Benton County, Alabama in those days. Does anyone have them sorted out? Thanks for any information. Ken

Hello; I am new to this list, hoping to find out all I can about the Chandler family of early Chester Co. Pa. in hopes that it will help me research my line of Garrett's who were very close to this family (as documents show). They both came from England and bought of William Penn's land in the 1680's, and in the 1700's moved on to New Castle Co. Del., and my Garrett's then went on to Loudoun Co. Va. (and always the Chandler name appears with them) Can anyone give me the information I search for?? Thank you so much in advance, Carol Garrett
Jesse Chandler of Henry and Franklin Co., VA (continued from 12/3/98 message) (Part three) There are several items to mention before I plunge into part three. I am finding a lot of information unconnected to Jesse. At the time she was concentrating on Jesse, but sent me other tidbits of information relating to various other Chandlers in the area. At the end of the discussion of Jesse, I will post a list of items gleaned from the papers. I will not post the source with the item unless you send me a message and ask where did a specific item come from. I am a two fingered typist and that will save me a lot of work. Third item. Does anyone have any information concerning the William Chandler (02-01-03-00-00) that appears in the 1790. Stokes, NC census? There is also listed in 1790 a William Chanley (01-03-02-00-00) in Surry Co., NC that I surmise is a Chandler with a misspelled name. In the 1800 and 1810 Stokes and Surry census, only the Surry William remains. The listing is (30110-210100). ON WITH THE JESSE STORY - A Jesse left footprints (i.e., a track record) in Henry County., VA and later the same or another Jesse left footprints in Franklin Co., VA, the county adjacent to and north of Henry County. In 1791 Henry Co. was split in two parts as Patrick Co., VA was formed. In our consideration of this sequence of events, we need to list a series of happenings that might help us make an educated guess at what happened. 1. There is no Jesse listed in the Family Tree Maker (FTM) census CD of Colonial America 1607-1789. This is not surprising in a collection of various census records before the first U.S. Census in 1790. 2. There is no record of a Jesse Chandler in Henry Co., VA in the first U.S. census of 1790. This is also not to surprising, even though Jesse left many footprints before this census. He may have been missed or may have been in transit to a new home at the time of the census. There were 3 Jesse Chandlers listed in this first census. One in DE, one in VT and one in the Newberry District or SC. (FTM census index). 3. In the US 1800 census, there are 2 Jesses, one in Newberry SC and one in VT. There is no Jesse in VA - but- the 1800 VA census was destroyed (all counties except Accomack & Louisa) and does not exist, although some records have been reconstituted from other sources such as tax records, etc. 4. There are 6 Jesses in the 1810 census. They are located in DE, MA, SC, SC, SC, and Franklin VA.. 5. In the 1820 census, there are only 4 Jesses, 2 in DE, one in MA and one in Franklin, VA. At this point, I will list a Jesse Chandler's foot prints in Henry Co. VA and also a Jesse Chandlers record in the adjacent county of Franklin, VA. Some of the information I will list is from the CFA research and some is from the documents supplied to me by Mrs. Sigmon. Some are from both sources. 1. The CFA documents say; Joel Chandler held some land in common with his brother Joseph, which they sold jointly in 1743. ...Joell's son Joel did move to Lunenburg Co. and lived in close association with his Uncle Joseph Chandler.... The younger Joell, son of Joseph and Priscilla had 6 siblings named Robert, John, David, Jesse, Timothy, and Rebecca. The Jesse mentioned is the same Jesse mentioned earlier as born in 1726 in Henrico, Co. VA. In 1754 he was in Cumberland Co. VA and by 1770 on the Pittsylvania Co. Tithe list. The CFA says that in 1793 he appears on the Henrry Co. Records as Jesse Chandler of S.C. and in the 1790, 1800, & 1810 census he appears in Greenville Co., SC. 2. Joseph Chandler (mentioned above) is listed in CFA documents as taking the oath of Allegiance in Henry Co. in 1778 together with Robert, Bally (sic), & Jesse. They also list Jesse and John (1782) as submitting claims for a gun for the militia. 3. From Mrs. Sigmon; A copy of the Henry Co, General Index to Deeds, Trust Deeds and Miscellaneous Liens. This page is for Grantors and only lists Chandlers. It shows Robert Chandler 1777..., Joseph Chandler..., 1779, Jesse Chandler 1793...., and several other listings for Joseph and Thomas Chandler in 1792 and 1794, plus some more modern Chandler listings for 1926 to 1950. 4. From Mrs. Sigmon; A copy of the Henry Co, "General index to Ended Law & Chancery County Court. The document has a column for Plaintiffs and one for Defendants. The Plaintiffs column on this page are all Chandlers. The first (1777) listing is Jesse "Appointed lieutenant of militia of this county, Took usual oath to commonwealth." Other Chandler listings are for various items (payment to witness, etc.) for James, Jesse, Benjamin, John, Joseph, Thomas (last in 1795). Jesse is listed in 1777, 1780, 1782, 1790, 1792 & 1793. At this point, I should say that I like to look at marriage records because they show names between the 10 year US census cycle and they also show males and females who may not have been listed as the head of a household in a census. Before 1850 only the names of heads of households were listed >From FTM marriage CD. Chandler marriages FRANKLIN Co. (before 1800) (Note, I have photo copies of most of these) Benjamin Chandler to Jane Fallis 1793 Daniel Chandler to Margaret Roan 1797 Shadrach Chandler to Anne Brummett 1789 Thomas Chandler to Charity Elliott 1787 William Chandler to Jane Douglas 1788 HENRY Co. (before 1800) none PATRICK Co. (before 1800) Issac Chandler to Elizabeth Stultz 1791 John Chandler to Elizabeth Bennett 1794 I see that that Part 3 is much to long, but rather than try to narrow it down, I will quit and continue in part four. I hope I am not boring you with this information. Please keep in mind that my Thompson Chandler seems to have no direct connection with Jesse. I just happen to have this information and I wanted to pass it on. See you in a few days. Tom. Dr. H.
