    1. Susan Chandler
    2. David Robinson
    3. My name is Gail Robinson and I am trying to find out information on my great grandmother, Susan Chandler. According to WV censuses, she was born July 1877 in West Virginia. She was married to Millard Stephens (also from WV) abt 15 Oct 1898 in Boone Co., WV. They had the following children: Herman William, b. Apr 1897; Carter Cecil (my grandfather) b. 1900 in Forks of Coal, WV; his twin sister Carlie; Ira G., b. 4 Apr 1903/04; Davie b. 1905/06; Millard Jr., b. 27 Jun 1910; Elda, b. 3 Oct 1913; Jodie, b. 1915; Stewart, b. 2 Jan 1918; and Mary (possibly stillborn). All the children were apparently born in West Virginia. In 1900 Susan and Millard were living in Boone Co., Scott District, WV. In 1910 and 1920 they were living in Kanawha Co., Alum creek District, WV. I have been unable to find Susan Chandler listed as a child on the 1880 censuses I've checked. I'm wondering if she may have had a different first name and perhaps Susan is a middle name or nickname. I would like to find out any information possible on Susan and her ancestors. Thanks for your help.

    1. REBECCA CHANDLER
    2. Betty Minyard
    3. I am looking for information on REBECCA CHANDLER who married RICHARD MINYARD in Franklin County, GA on Oct. 24, 1827. I found them in the 1850 census of Talledega County, AL. There it states she was born in South Carolina and from her age she was probably born in 1809 or 1810. I would like to know who her parents were and if she had any siblings. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks, Betty Minyard in San Antonio.

    1. Ezekiel Chandler 1790VA and Susannah Chandler 1800SC
    2. David Chandler
    3. Re Ezekiel Chandler (1790VA) and son "Jack" (1825-6NC) I have come to the same conclusion although no hard and fast evidence Jackson and John Wesley were one and the same. Family history has him as "Jack" but full name John Wesley Chandler. His son was also John Wesley, and went by "Wes" or "Wesley" to differentiate them. I had always thought Ezekiel was his father because of the proximity throughout Jack's short life (died in the 1860s in his mid-30s), that both had at some point in time claimed to be "Tinkers" (as was one of theJoseph's also closely associated). I think there may be a chance that the Andrew Jackson Chandler born in 1811 in TN was probably a younger brother to Ezekiel, and he kinda went his own way (although not too far, settling in the upper parts of Laurel while Ezekiel settled in the Ivy Gap area). No one that I know of has been able to associate a father for Andrew Jackson (1811TN), and same problem with Ezekiel. The 1872 Madison Co NC property action taken by Buckner named Ezekiel's son as "Jackson," dead by 1872 (and that fits my Jack), but it could be that Buckner didn't know whether he was just Jack, or Jackson, and this is the only reference I have found that names "Jackson" Chandler associated with Ezekiel. He (Buckner) also says that this Jackson's widow had taken other children with her and gone to Tennessee, which also fits with my Jack's wife Sarah L. Sams. Further Buckner says that Asa and Terrell were still in NC, and both can be found in the census (but the birth dates I have are 1851 and 1853) which match two children reported in 1860 census of Jack Chandler, although the names don't quite match up, as they are reported to be named Abner and Thomas in census. Why the name differences I wonder? So much fits, that I am reasonably certain Ezekiel is the father of Jack/Jackson/John Wesley Chandler. The Joseph mentioned in the marriage bond of Ezekiel and Susannah could be a father to Ezekiel, or a brother. I have a hunch, that Susannah Chandler may be the daughter of Josiah Chandler and Sarah Eddins, as Susannah's birth is in SC in 1800, and Josiah and Sarah had a child named Sally, or Susannah in Wattsville, SC that same year, and by 1803 were in Henry Co, VA, and 1804 were in Wilson Co, TN. An Andrew, born 1789 also appears in that family as well. I have been unable to find any other Susannah Chandler born that year anywhere, and I can't seem to find out what happened to Josiah's child, and this is a family that has been pretty well researched. Somewhere along the way they lost Susannah, and Ezekiel finds one. It takes a real leap to make the connection however, but it is worth looking at and it is for this reason I put this on the Chandler list in hopes someone reads this and has a clue. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Cc: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Wednesday, December 30, 1998 7:43 PM Subject: John Book >David, > Did I send you my update on John Chandler's family where Jackson >and John Wesley seem to be attached, or did I just think I did??? > We're still not sure of them; if you got it, did it seem reasonable to >you or spark any old stories that might make a difference. > Sorry for the delay. 1. Whites of Kentucky, Alabama and Mississippi
    2. Marleen Van Horne
    3. Hello All, I am seeking the ancestors of Willis C. White. He was born in Kentucky about 1790. Around 1813 he married Eliza Daniel, who was born in Tennessee, in 1799. All of their children, except the youngest were born in Alabama, and he was born in Mississippi. Willis owned property in Greene and Sumter counties of Alabama and in Kemper County, Mississippi. He died between 1840 and 1844. Willis and Eliza had three sons, John W. White, Willis D. White and Samuel White. I mention these names, because I think they may have been repeated in each generation. John W. White named his oldest son Willis Chandler White. I think that was the middle name of Willis I, also. So basically, I am looking for the ancestors Willis C. White born in Kentucky about 1790, whose father was possibly John W. White, who may have had a brother Samuel, and whose family was probably connected to Chandlers. There was a Samuel White whose will was probated in Noxubee County, Mississippi in July 1839. His only heir was John W. White. Mathew Jackson of Charlotte, Virginia was appointed John's guardian. Except for the similarity of names, I have not been able to determine if the two families are related. It is beginning to appear that Parkinson's Disease is a hereditary illness in my White line. If your White family lived in Kentucky in the period 1790-1820, and there is a history of this malady in your line, we might very well be related. I would appreciate hearing from anyone researching White families in Kentucky, in the period 1790-1820. 1. Levi Chandler of Mitchell County, NC
    2. David Chandler
    3. I'm not sure who was the father of Levi, but he appears first in an area called North Cove which is near Linnville, now county of McDowell. He was first surveyor of Mitchell County when formed in 1861. Appearance in North Cove, and trained as Surveyor lead me to believe he might be a son of the John Chandler of Burke Co, who was to view a road in progress in that same. Here are some data I have picked up on Levi: 1850 census shows he is a farmer, age 48 in Yancey Co, and in 1860 Census he is shown as Surveyor. On 6/30/1861 he was elected first County Surveyor for Mitchell County (it being formed that year). 1870 census of Mitchell Co, (Mitchell formed in the 1860s from parts of Yancey and Burke) show Levi again, with additional children. Burke Co Index Sales of Estates 1832-1838 shows Levi Purchased land in Apr 1832 (page 6). Levi may be the son or grandson of John (Jno) Chandler, who, according to Burke County records of 8 Jul 1797 was appointed to view the road from head of upper creek to found and mark from head of upper creek below Beck's Mill. This sounds like the work associated with a surveyor. This same John Chandler, in Jan 1799 (Burke County records), received a petition from the inhabitants of North Cove regarding road work. John Chandler was mentioned as the Sheriff in a deed recorded in Burke County for William Morrison to David McCracken, January 28, 1796. In April 1813 John Chandler witnessed probate for IsaacCox. Levi also had property on Ponder's Branch in the 1830's, in vacinity of Larkin and Joseph T. Chandler, was Buncombe Co, now Madison County. Also possibly related, are references to a Robert Chandler, who according to Burke County records, received a Subpoena in Apr 1779 in behalf of Adonijah Harbour in case of William Murrah vs Adonijah Harbour. There was a Robert Chandler that was a surveyor in the Halifax/Henry Co region along the VA border in the 1770s, and several of Sarah Sams close relatives were hired to work with him as Chain Carriers. Other mentions: Surry County, NC Quaker records show Willis, Jacob, John, and Levi Chandler, son of Joseph. The date is 8/10/1822 (not necessarily a birth date). Washington County, TN Marriages, Adolphus Chandler to Priscilla Thornburg, Nov 12, 1846. Levi had grandson named Adolphus also, but born in 1864, so this Adolphus may be a brother or uncle of Levi.

    2. I received a response from the gentleman who provided me with the information on Hannah Chandler. It is as follows: Your letter lists Hannah Chandler as b. 1657 and d. 11-20-1730. I don't have a death date for her, but this is where the 1657 came from. This book details events during the Salem and Andover Witchcraft trials as well as relationships of the Chandlers, Danes, and Phelps. Salem Witchcraft and Hawthorne's House of the Seven Gables Enders A. Robinson c. 1992, Heritage Books, Inc., Bowie MD p. 233 "Daniel Bigsby was born about 1651 in Ipswich, son of Sara (Wyatt) Heard and Joseph Bigsby. the family lived in Ipswich and then in Rowley Village (in 1685 Rowley Village was incorporated as a separate town and its name was changed to Boxford. The town then embraced parts of the present towns of Groveland and Middleton). In 1674 in Andover, Daniel Bigsby married Hannah Chandler, born about 1657, the older daughter of Hannah (Brewer) and Thomas Chandler, an original proprietor of Andover. In 1682 Hannah's sister, Sarah Chandler, married Samuel Phelps. In 1687 Hannah's brother, William Chandler, 3rd, married Eleanor Phelps." "In 1692 Daniel Bigsby, a carpenter about 41; his wife, Hannah, about 35; and six children were living in the south part of Andover. Hannah (Chandler) Bigsby, together with her niece, Sarah Phelps, Jr., were part of the afflicted circle at the examination of the widow Mary (Ayer) Parker on September 1. Mary Parker was hanged on September 22, 1692. Hannah was one of the afflicted at the Andover touch test on September 7. At the examination of Henry Salter on September 7, it was attested that he afflicted Hannah Bigsby among others." Hope this helps. Jayne

    3. Benay, Your Mama Chandler sounds like mine.My grandfather is William Frank Chandler born April 1905 and died October 1983 in Colbert Co AL. My dad knows only that her name was Ada, can't remember what her second husbands last name is, nor where grandpa was born. Her first husband was a Davis and had 3 children who lived and died in Russellville, AL. With her second husband she had aunt Ginny who lived and died in Tuscumbia, AL. Next was Chandler. I know that grandpa had an older half-brother, Chester, who died in the 1930's. Her last husband was a McDowell and had Moses who died in Mobile AL and Calvin, who I understand died in TX. Because of all the unanwered questions, I finally broke down and ordered Social Security information on my paternal grandparents and maternal grandmother. I may have to order the same on my great-uncles to get their father's names. All I have to say is, Ada must have been one healthy woman to have 7 children and out live 4 husbands in her lifetime. Death records do exist for 1902/03 for Spokane Co. where I believe the wife (my Grandmother) died, but they are very limited and of course, I don't have a name other then Chandler to look for. 2. Okay all you Hannah inquirers, here is what I have found on our birthdate debate. My original posting (seems like a lifetime ago) was INCORRECT, just as Cheryl ([email protected]) pointed out. This must have been a keying error on my part (Thanks to Cheryl for this!). However, after going through some of my hard copies, I did find a date that makes more sense, but I am unsure of how reliable my sourse was. This was downloaded from an e-mail from another Chandler researcher and although he does list reliable sourses for the information that he gathered, I do not know where he got this date from. When I got this information I was fairly new at this stuff and did not properly record sourses. I do have an old e-mail address for him and I will attempt to send him a note to confirm his sourse. IF I hear back from him, I will post for everyone. I appologize for all of the confusion that my original posting caused. It has been exciting though, hasen't it? 3. Zelma: Do you have any source for this information. That Hannah and William were born the same day. I can't fine it in the records anywhere. Always a blank on Hannah. I have proof of her marriage to my grand parent Daniel Bixby. Thats not my problem. 3. Capt Thomas Chandler and Hannah Brewer were the parents of Hannah Chandler who married my Daniel Bixby.Dec 2, 1674. All reports say she was born in Andover but I have not been able to find her in any Vital Records of Andover. I belive your William is My Thomas Chandlers Brother. as the William Chandler baptised 20 Marach 1635/6 Married first Mary Dane married 2nd Bridget Henchman, they also had a sister Hannah but that is not my hannah she married George Abbot, m.2nd Francis Dane.. There were & children in all two died young. These are the children of William Chandler and Annis Bayford. Who is the generation that came over from England on the Abigail. a ship in the Winthrop Fleet. Annis married John Dane then John Parmenter. Also most every generation had a Hannah and a lot of the sons also had daug. named Hannah. opes this helps you clear up the confusion. Some of this came out of a privately published book "William and Annis Chandler's Descendants. Compiled by Helen Hunt Reed. of Toledo, Oh. in Dec 1983. There is also a great article on the Chandlers in the NEHGR 1931, April , Vol 85. pages 133-145. This article has 4 generation of Chandlers back in England and William and his Children here in New England. I still have no date for Hannah.
