Seeking help on the ancestry of Garrett Sandridge Chandler. Parents were probably John and Rhoda Chandler. I have stuff on Garrett's family (Lauderdale Co., Ala forward), but John and Rhoda are a dead end right now. Does anyone have stuff on John and Rhoda? I feel like the name "Sandridge" must be a family name from SOMEWHERE! Any clues out there? Thanks! Sharon Stephens <[email protected]>
Hi Wizzzaerd, This is what I have on Elizabeth Chandler/Alvin Simons: 1. Thomas5 CHANDLER, Jr. (Thomas4, John3, John2, William1) was born 23 September 1740 in Woodstock, Windham Co., CT (Source: (1) Town Clerk, Chester, VT Town Records, Bk A/p 143., (2) VT Town Clerks, VT Vital Records Index., (3) Clarence Withrop Bowen, The History of Woodstock, CT Genealogies, (1926)., (4) Proceedings At Chester, Vt. June 29, 1909 On Old Home Day.), and died ca 1798 in Chester, Windsor Co., VT. He married Sarah LORD 21 July 1763 in Chester, Windsor Co., VT (Source: (1) VT Town Clerks, VT Vital Records Index., (2) Clarence Withrop Bowen, The History of Woodstock, CT Genealogies, (1926).), daughter of Joseph LORD and Sarah RAND. She was born 18 May 1742 in Athol, Worcester Co., MA, and died 22 May 1791. Notes for Thomas CHANDLER, Jr.: Source! "Men of Vermont Biographical History of Vermonters & Sons of Vermont"/compiled by Jacob G. Ulley 1894: p. 66: "Thomas Chander, Jr., the second son, first secretary of state for a few months, then for nearly three years speaker of the General Assembly, was born Sept. 23, 1740, and died towards the close of the century in poverty and embarrassment, like that of his father. He was also for nine years, 1776-'75, an assistant judge of the inferior court of common pleas, a court which New York seems to have made a family snap for the Chandlers. But he was soon after active among the Vermont men, was a delegate in the Westminster convention of October, 1776, and January, 1777, was elected to the first General Assembly in March, 1778, and chosen its clerk, but abandoned the post to take the secretaryship of state, was re-elected in 1778 and 1781, was a member of the council in 1779 and 1780, a commissioner of sequestration on the estates of Tories, and was judge of the first Supreme Court, elected in October, 1778. He resigned the speakership of the Assembly in the middle of the session of 1780, because of charges brought by Azariah Wright of Westminster, alleging that he had acted as an attorney for a negro while speaker, and that he also invited the massacre at Westminster in 1775 by misleading the sons of liberty by writing to them that he knew his father's mind in their favor. Chandler brought a libel suit against Wright because of these charges, and finally recovered some $50 and costs, but they nevertheless brought him into "great discredit" and he sank into a rapid decline politically. He was once elected a judge of the Windsor county court in 1786, and in 1787 again represented Chester in the Assembly, but the prejudice against him was too great to permit his successful advancement. He was, however, an undoubted patriot during the war, and exerted himself much for the patriot cause in Chester town meetings. The records of the Governor and council in October, 1792, show that like his father he was a petitioner for an act of insolvency in his favor, having been reduced to poverty "by a long series of sickness in his family." Children of Thomas CHANDLER and Sarah LORD are: 2 i. Lucy6 CHANDLER, born 28 May 1764 in Chester, Windsor Co., VT (Source: (1) Town Clerk, Chester, VT Town Records, Bk A/p 145., (2) VT Town Clerks, VT Vital Records Index.). She married Ezikiel COLEMAN 23 May 1782 in Chester, Windsor Co., VT (Source: (1) Town Clerk, Chester, VT Town Records, Bk 1/p 141., (2) VT Town Clerks, VT Vital Records Index.) 3 ii. Sarah CHANDLER, born 30 September 1766 in Chester, Windsor Co., VT (Source: (1) Town Clerk, Chester, VT Town Records, Bk A/p. 145); died in Ogdensburg, St. Lawrence Co., NY. She married Daniel FIELD; born 9 September 1764 (Source: Field Genealogy/F.C. Pierce;). 4 iii. Thomas Lord CHANDLER, born 24 August 1768 in Chester, Windsor Co., VT (Source: (1) VT Town Clerks, VT Vital Records Index., (2) Town Clerk, Chester, VT Town Records, Bk A/p 145.). He married Asanath ADAMS 14 September 1794 in Chester, Windsor Co., VT (Source: VT Town Clerks, VT Vital Records Index.). 5 iv. Elizabeth CHANDLER, born 10 May 1770 in Chester, Windsor Co., VT (Source: Town Clerk, Chester, VT Town Records, Bk A/p. 145.). She married Alvah SIMONDS 12 September 1790 in Andover, Windsor Co., VT (Source: Town Clerk, Andover, VT Town Records, Bk 1/p 270.). 6 v. Persis CHANDLER, born 18 February 1772 in Chester, Windsor Co., VT (Source: Town Clerk, Chester, VT Town Records, Bk A/p. 145.). 7 vi. Henrietta CHANDLER, born 28 November 1779 in Chester, Windsor Co., VT (Source: Town Clerk, Chester, VT Town Records, Bk A/p. 145.); died 27 March 1784 in Chester, Windsor Co., VT (Source: Town Clerk, Chester, VT Town Records, Bk 1/p 156.). My line of descend is Arrilucia7, Chauncey Cheney6, John5, Thomas4, John3, John2, William1. Hope this helps. I have just been introduced to a most fabulous website which should be extremely useful to all those with genealogical interests. It is as follows: http://www.cnde.iastate.edu/staff/swormley/maps/maps_waypoints.html. When at the WAYPOINTS homepage select Thesaurus of Geographic Names and search for the place name in question. E.g. a "Kenvir" search will yield information telling you that this is an "inhabited place" in Harlan County, Kentucky at Latitude 36 degrees 51' N, Longitude 083 degrees 9' W. Any good library atlas should enable the researcher to pin point that location. If you are researching a state, other than the original 13, that state's Hiway Department probably publishes County Highway Maps which are chock full of information and should be in the hands of anyone doing serious investigative work. In most states the charge for these is considerably less than a buck per county. In all but heavily populated urban areas the most useful information to be found -- in addition to place names -- and in addition to the precise location of all highways, roads, trails and many paths -- is the location of virtually all cemeteries. Hello. I am looking for information on Art, William, and Carrie Chandler b. approx 1880-1890's, possibly in California. I believe their mother was Mary Hunter Baird Chandler. Carrie later became Mrs. Carrie Marshbank and lived in San Francisco, Calif. Does anyone have any information on these names? Thank you. Sherri [email protected]
Dave My roots are also "New English"; I'm descended from William and Annis Chandler who immigrated to Roxbury, MA in 1637. I just looked up "McCoy" in my copy of George Chandler's book about William's and Annis' descendants. The only one was "John" who married a Mary Chandler. I think it's unlikely Sarah was descended from this CHANDLER branch. Have you tried locating Sarah's birth record? (Vital records from town or county in NC) It would most likely give the names of her parents. Best wishes in your search!! Hi, I have a Chandler mystery! Bear with me while I explain.... My ancestor Monroe Brown Chandler b. 1851 lived in MS at the time of the Civil War, later moved to Louisiana. The family story is that his father was Weldon E. Chandler, born in Kentucky, and moved to MS sometime before the Civil War. He died during the war in the confederate army. Married 1) unknown, before 1851, died young (children Monroe and Gabriel); married 2) Widow Stephens before 1860 (4 more children). Weldon's father was supposedly John Y. Chandler who lived in Kentucky. I have found a lot of information on Chandlers in Webster and Henderson Counties, Kentucky, and someone sent me a tree of these Chandlers (including a John, son Weldon E.) going back to North Carolina. I've found a John Chandler with wife Malena, son Weldon E. in the Henderson Co. KY 1850 census. I also have a marriage of Weldon Chandler to Martha CREWS in Henderson Co, KY in 1850. However, the will of Martha Crews's father Williamson in 1880 (KY) bequeaths 1 dollar to "my daughter Marthy Chandler wife of Elden Chandler". According to my family story, they would have moved to MS and both be DEAD by that time! I also found a database on the web that lists Weldon Chandler and wife Martha Crews having a son John born 1854 in KY. That doesn't match. I haven't found any Chandlers in MS yet that match up with mine. I'm looking for anymore info anyone might have about Chandlers in KY or MS that can help me figure this out. I would like to order military records for Weldon Chandler, but I don't know his county, unit or anything. Help! Thank you! Kelly Hokkanen
First time caller, short time listener. Oh excuse me . . . wrong medium! Actually, my 2G Grandparents were Martin McCoy and SARAH Chandler and though I've been able to trace Martin's ancestry back just one generation to Northern Ireland, Sarah's immigrant ancestry has successfully eluded me. I have this: Sarah Chandler was born June 2, 1818 in Randolph Co., NC. She and Martin were married March 30, 1837 in Smoothe Prairie, IL. She died June 2, 1818, in Harrison Twp., Winnebago Co., IL. Martin McCoy came to Southern Illinois in 1834, resided there for a little over four years and was married there. In April, 1838 he and his bride moved to Rockford (Northern IL) and resumed their farming life. Sarah had a brother living near them and I'm almost positive that his name was Henry Chandler. Not much to go on. The North Carolina part is interesting to me because almost all the rest of my ancestry is New English. Help! Dave Bardue

Looking for information on the parents of William Lawrence Chandler (b. 1810? - d. 1836). He was born in Fredericksburg, VA, married Adeline Mackey, and bought property in Fredericksburg. They had a daughter, Susan Catherine Chandler who died in 1835 and is buried in Fredericksburg. We don't know where. Then, they moved to Zanesville, Ohio where William died in 1836, leaving his wife and a son, William Henry Chandler. We have been looking for his ancestor's for years. I really think our only hope in finding his family is if someone else has William Lawrence Chandler listed as a brother on their family tree. There just doesn't seem to be any other way. The family Bible just lists his birth date -- so we don't have the Bible that belonged to his parents. His Bible was given to him in 1824 by the Fredericksburg Bible Society. Does anyone have Wm. as a brother of their relative???? Thanks, Mollie

Rebecca, It looks like your Chandler's is my family. Walton Co. was the kicker because my Owens lived there before that part of Walton became Newton. So I guess that makes us cousins. :) Sharon
Theresa, I am sorry I said William's brother but it was William Jr. son Thomas who had a son John. Sharon
Theresa, Thank you so much your website is very nice. William's brother Thomas had a son named John and he is born the same year as mine. Looks good so far. I also want to thank all the people who have sent me mail. Thank you, Sharon
