    1. [CHAMBERLIN] Re: Theodore H. & Joseph Chamberlin/Chamberlain of NY and Paterson, NJ
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AUI.2ACIB/211.1 Message Board Post: Actually, his name is Theophilus, not Theodore, as listed in the 1860 Census when he was living in North W. Paterson, NJ, with his parents, William Chamberlain, age 54, and Frances, age 54, both born England. William H. Chamberlain (or Chamberlin), is listed in the 1850 Census in NYC, Ward 13, with his wife Frances and 3 children, all born England. As indicated by the ages and birth places of their 7 known children in Census records, they came to America from England between 1842 and 1848, and settled initially in NYC, it appears. Ref. GenForum posting, dated 11 Apr 1999, by Sue Pierce, for a query pertaining to this same family. William's wife is believed to be Frances Leatherland (not Leatherhand), whose marriage to William is listed in an IGI record as 16 Dec 1828, Radford, Nottingham. She might well be Fanny Leatherland, chr. 15 Jul 1804, there, daughter of John & Hannah, per IGI record. If so, she was a couple of years older than she reported consistently in the ! 1850-1870 Census in the U. S., which suggests that her husband might also have misrepresented his age. The only William I can see listed in IGI records as having been born in Nottingham in the 1802-1807 period of time is William Chamberlain, chr. 9 Aug 1802, Neward Upon Trent, Nottingham, son of William & Ann. I have no idea whether this is the same person - no way of knowing whether William himself even came from Nottingham, though this is a good assumption. One can see at least one William Chamberlain listed in the 1881 Census in Nottingham, who may or may not be related, so there are definitely traces of Chamberlain/lins in Nottingham that can be researched further. That's as far as I can take this analysis, and hope it is helpful to you. I could not locate either William or Frances in the 1880 Census in NJ, and presume they were deceased by this time. Several of William & Frances Chamberlin's children can be traced in Paterson, NJ, by the way - you mentioned Theo'! s older brother, Joseph, but daughter Sarah and her husband John Holli day were living right next door in 1870, and son Thos. H. is living elsewhere in Paterson in 1880 with his family. The 7 children are: William (birth date and place unknown); Sarah Ann, b. c1833; John H., b. c1835; Israel, b. c1837; Thomas, b. c1840; Joseph, b. c1842; Theophilus H. "Theo", b. c1847. I didn't take the time to try to trace all of them in all the available census records, etc., but this should be done, of course. Please contact me via Email if you wish to discuss this information in greater detail.
