Connecticut and entered service September 6, 1861. His ID tag was found in the Confederate H. L. Hunley -- the first submarine in history to sink an enemy warship (the U.S.S. Housatonic). The article and picture of the ID tag are in the National Geographic, July 2002 on page 97. A great find for any descendant of Ezra Chamberlin. The article supposes that the ID tag was kep by a confederate crewman as a trophy of battle...not that Ezra Chamberlin was on board the submarine.
