    1. Re: John Albert Chamberlin, son of Ebenezer of NY
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AUI.2ACIB/1.2.9.1.1 Message Board Post: It's good to hear back from you after several years! After about 3 hours of intensive searching, I've rather tentatively been able to trace this family a bit, mostly in census records, but also in USGenWeb data for DeKalb Co., IL. This is Ebenezer Chamberlin, b. Sep 1833, NY, d. after 1900, perhaps Cutler, Franklin Co., KS, who married Almira Murray, 20 Apr 1858, La Salle Co., IL, b. Feb 1841, IL, perhaps La Salle Co., d. after 1900, perhaps Cutler, Franklin Co., KS. Four children listed: James E., b. c1860, NY; William H., b. Dec 1866, IL, your John Albert, b. 15 Nov 1876, Remington, Jasper Co., IN (per your records); and Helen E., b. Jul 1880, KS. Ebenezer and his wife were living next door to their son William in 1900, in Cutler Twp., Franklin Co., KS. In 1880, as "Ebus Chamberlan", the family was living in Greenwood, Franklin Co., KS, with Almira's mother, Jane Murry. In 1870, they resided in Victor, De Kalb Co., IL, also with Jane Murry, with a William Ch'n & fami! ly living next door who is presumed to be Ebenezer's brother (fits well with census data I've reviewed). Sandwich, also in DeKalb Co., IL, which you mentioned (probably so named because the township is only a couple of miles wide, "sandwiched in" between other townships), is located very near Victor. In 1860, things are less certain. Since they were married in La Salle Co. only two years earlier, and since an older Ebenezer & family appears there in Northville Town, I'm guessing that they might have been living there. Ebenezer is perhaps the same person listed as Augustus Chamberlan, age 25, with wife Mary (presumed by me to be the same person as Almira), age 19, and other family members that match well, including a Mary Murray, age 43, b. NY (presumed to be the same person as Jane). Living nearby is Ebenezer Chamberlin, age 55, probably widowed, with a Benjamin, age 34, probably this Ebenezer's son, and living with other families nearby are two presumed daughters: Sarah, age 12, b. MI, and Jane, age 13, b. MI. This provides a clear Michigan connection. This same family can be found in 1850 in Camden, Hillsdale Co., MI: - 1850 Census, Camden, Hillsdale Co., MI, p. 326, #32/32, 17 Jul 1850, Ebenezer Chamberlin, age 45, farmer, $3000, b. MA; Mary, age 41, b. MA; Sanford, age 21, b. NY; Ebenezer, age 16, b. NY; Benjamin, age 14, b. OH; Emeline, age 12, b. OH; Mary, age 9, b. OH; William, age 7, b. OH; Phebe J., age 4, b. OH; Sarah, age 2, b. MI. In LDS records and in my databases, there are other Ebenezers born in 1795 and 1805, some of them in MA (but a quick check indicates that they are not this person). An Ebenezer is listed in OH in the 1840 Census, whose data matches that listed in the family in 1850 above: Ebenezer Chamberlin, Perry Twp., Lake Co., OH, p. 407: 111001-11001 (age 30-40). But I don't see this individual listed anywhere else (I checked my own research databases, census data, LDS-IGI records, Ancestry.com, etc.). I can't positively trace the family on farther back, though the census data indicate that they were living in NY State in 1830, where Sandford was born c1829. In 1830, there were two families listed in NY with data that fits, both of them unidentified at present: - Volney, Oswego Co., NY, Ebenezer Chamberlain, p. 200: 10101-10001 (age 20-30) - Saline, Onondaga Co., NY, Ebenezer Chamberlin, p. 037: 10001-10001 (age 20-30). I can't go any further back, at present. Here is the marriage citation, and a military record probably pertaining to him: Probably the individual listed in a GenWeb site for DeKalb Co., IL, Co. E, 58th Infantry: Ebenise Chamberlin, residence, Chicago. The GenWeb link to the Illinois Statewide Marriage index, 1763-1900 lists Chamberlin, Ebenezer, and Murray, Almira, 04/20/1858, Vol. C, p. ---, No. 207, La Salle Co. I'm aware that you said your Ebenezer was born c1795, but if I've identified the right person in the census data, this does not seem to be his correct age - he was born c1805, not c1795. So, I've run out of leads, at present, but would be pleased to discuss this information at greater length with you, via Email, if you wish. I hope this is helpful to you.
