Chamberlin was reported missing at the Battle of Fort Wagner the year before the submarine Hunley sank in 1864 although his identification tag has been located aboard the wreckage of the Hunley. It's a very interesting story and, while I have nothing to do with the search or the family, one I felt that you as researchers needed to be made aware of. Wanda VanderVeen

    1. [CHAMBERLIN] Re: Chamberlins of Sadsbury, PA - turn of the 19th century
    2. I have no imformation on parents or siblings of Jonas Chamberlin. He immigrated in 1731 as a single young man and I assume he was born before 1710 but I have no documentation of his birth date. Sadsbury Meeting Minutes record: Jonas Chamberlin, Certificate of Seperation from Edenderry Meeting, Kings County, Ireland dated 5th, 11m., 1731, recieved 31st, 1m., 1733. Jonas had a son Joseph, born 4, 2m., 1749 but he died 20, 10 m., 1751. Joseph was a common name through the generations of Chamberlins but I can connect your Joseph. Sorry that I can't be of any more help.

    1. [CHAMBERLIN] Re: Chamberlins of Sadsbury, PA - turn of the 19th century
    2. Do you know anything about Jonas Chamberlin's son, Joseph, or if he had a brother or nephew named Joseph?. I am a descendent of a Joseph Camblin whose last name has been spelled many different ways. He was born around 1739 in Ireland. He married Eleanor Evans and lived in Washington County, Pennsylvania. I think he may have lived in Chester County at one time because his son David married Sidonia Evans possibly in Chester County. This web site http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~usbios/West_Virginia/Bios/Berkeley/jamesbarrettchamberlin.txt mentions that Jonas had a brother Joseph who went to Pennsylvania. Any information you may have on a possible connection to my Joseph would be appreciated

    1. [CHAMBERLIN] Chamberlins of Sadsbury, PA - turn of the 19th century
    2. I am stuck at the 1790-early 1800 period. I have documentation back to Obed Chamberlin (b. abt 1790, d. abt 1830?). I am unable to connect him to a father/mother. There were several Chamberlin/Chamberlain families in the area, which is on the border of Chester and Lancaster counties in PA, as the fourth gemeration was coming along. They descended from Jonas Chamberlin, were Quakers and the first three generations are very well documented. The turn of the century saw a lot of accusations and disownments within the Quakers. One Chamberlin was accused and apparently was eventually cleared and accepted back into the Friends, but then the whole family appears to have quit attending and they were disowned for that. (They may ahve became Presbyrterians, but I am looking for proof of that as well) Once they were disowned there are no more church records. I find one census record of Obed in West Fallowfield Twp. (neighboring Twp to the S.) in 1830 and I found that he served in the War of 1812. He seems to disappear (I assume died shortly after 1830), but there were a wife (widow) and two sons and two daughters. Obed had three brothers; George (b. 1795) who married Elizabeth Slokom and moved his family to Redford, Wayne County, MI in the 1840's. William Marsh Chamberlin (b. 1809, d. 8 mo., 1879) married Rachael (Pennington?) (b.1813, d. 1893) was a prominent farmer in the area around Sadsbury (Christianna, PA). Both are buried at the Sadsbury Friends Cemetary. Thomas Chamberlin who apparently served in the Military and was on pension in Salisbury Twp (neighboring to the N.) in the 1870's With the Military connections it appears that some had broken completely with the Quakers. Any information on the parents or any other siblings will be greatly appreciated. I also have considerable information on the earliest three generations that I can share.

    2. My maternal grandfather is Aurthur M. Chamberlin. He is about to pass away. We have a book written by Maria Louise Barrett chamberlin. I believe she was his grandmother. The name of the book is Looking Back from Eighty-Five. Her sons were Henry Barret and Arthur Marshall. My grandfather must be Henry's son because she dedicates the book to Arthur "who left us before the journey was ended. We are looking for info for an obituary for grandpa.

    1. [CHAMBERLIN] Edmund Chamberlain and Elizabeth Kingsley
    2. Hi Sara, I'm going to pass on your msg to the others and maybe someone will recognize the names. Subj: Re: CHAMBERLAIN Date: 03/26/2001 9:01:53 AM Pacific Standard Time From: mlevi@ctsi.net (Mark Levi) To: Suttafran@aol.com Hi Fran, I still have a problem with the family of Edmund Chamberlain and Elizabeth Kingsley. They married 20 Nov 1766 in Woodstock, CT. There are 3 different entries in the LDS family search program - one says their 12 children were born in Woodstock, CT, another says Woodstock, VT, and the third says they were born in Sturbridge, MA. I have looked at the town vital records for all three towns. I found birth records for the first 5 children in Woodstock, CT (Rufus, Lucinda, Ralph, Elisabeth, Edmund), but not the other 7 (Jonathan, Nancy, Susanna, Adonijah, Wyllis, Myra, Experience) . I found no birth records for any of them in Woodstock, VT (those records were barely legible) or in Sturbridge, MA. However, the family did have ties to the other two places, as some of them lived in Sturbridge later on, and my Elisabeth (Betsey), who was the 4th one of the 12, was married in a town near Woodstock, VT. I'd love to figure out where the later siblings were born and trace their families. Best wishes, Sara Levi ~~~~~~~~~~~ TTYL, Fran Daniels ©¿©¬ Suttafran@aol.com http://www.lvcm.com/reuthers/genealogy.htm Join a free mailing list or search the archives at: http://lists.rootsweb.com/ Great Search Sites: http://www.ancestry.com/share/awt/main.htm http://worldconnect.genealogy.rootsweb.com/ http://www.familysearch.org

Date: 03/22/2001 9:55:29 AM Pacific Standard Time From: lkgraham@qwest.net (Linda Graham) To: SuttaFran@aol.com Hello, and thanks for your website. I found it after it was listed in the Surname Search Daily list today. I have a whole family of Chamberlains that start in Massachusetts and Vermont and New Hampshire, and go to NY, especially Allegany County. MY line comes through Joseph Chamberlain and wife Hannah Gilbert, their son Simon Chamberlain and wife (unknown--yet!), his son Simon, md. 1756 in Dudley, Worcester, MA to Elizabeth Dodge, their son Elisha, md. to Hannah Twitchell in NH, and so forth. Do you know any of these guys? Are you interested in having these lines? I'd be happy to send you a GEDCOM file with my Chamberlain line, if you'd like it. I have 3 Benjamin Chamberlains, none of whom seem to appear in your lines. Popular name, I guess. Let me know if you recognize this line, or if you'd like to add it to the website. The website is great, by the way.
