    1. [CHAMBERLIN] Theodore H. & Joseph Chamberlin/Chamberlain of NY and Paterson, NJ
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Chamberlain, Chamberlin Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AUI.2ACIB/211 Message Board Post: Hello All, My friend's paternal great grandfather was Charles H. Chamberlin. I found him in the 1880 Census living with his parents at 345 Totowa Avenue in Paterson, Passaic Co., New Jersey, U.S.A. with a birth year circa 1875. He has 2 sisters listed: 4 year old Mary F. and 1 year old Jennie E.. Both their parents are listed as being born in New York. His father is listed as 33 year old Theodore H. Chamberlain & his mother as 33 year old Amy (both born circa 1847). Theodore is a printer in Paterson. Both his parents are listed as being from England. Amy keeps home and her parents are both from New York. Theodore’s older brother 38 year old Joseph Chamberlain lives next door at 347 with his wife Martha, 13 year old daughter Annie and 8 year old Franklin. According to the Census, Joseph was born in England so, Theodore’s parents must have moved to New York sometime between 1842 and 1847 in order to have Theodore in New York. Does anyone have connections with this Theodore H. Chamberlain/Chamberlin from New York and Paterson, NJ and/or his brother, Joseph? Any idea where in England or which ship records between 1842-1847 I can check to find their parents. Thanks for the help!! Miguel Labrego mlabrego@pobox.upenn.edu

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AUI.2ACIB/201.1.1.1 Message Board Post: Your earlier Ancestry.com and GenForum postings said that Robert Earl Chamberlin and Rachel Louella Holliday were married in Columbus, OH, and now you say they were married in Ashtabula, OH, based on "a marriage record for him and Rachel" - what kind of record - is this their actual marriage certicate that you have obtained, or what? You may wish to contact me via Email to confirm your actual source for this marriage data (I'd like to know exactly what the marriage record says), and also to provide the identifying information that you say you have from Robert's military papers, which might list the names of his parents, for instance. If in fact Robert was married in Ashtabula, then almost certainly he is the following individua, from my transcription online of the microfilm image - some of the data very difficult to read: - 1930 Census, Ashtabula City, AshtabulaTwp., Ashtabula Co., OH, p. 006B, #131/143, 3 Apr 1930, #523 Lake St., Earl Chamberlain, head, age 27, married age 21, (occupation listed but illegible - could be some kind of machinist), PA/PA/PA; Irene B?, wife, age 26, m. age 20, MO/MO/OH; Robert C. son, age 4 2?/12, OH/PA/MO; Margarite? L?, daughter, age 2 3/12, OH/PA/MO I have not been able to trace this family on back, but it could be the following individual identified in LDS records: Earl Chamberlain, b. 1904, Jefferson, OH, d. bef. 1978, prob. Jefferson, OH, m. c1926, Irene Leonard, b. c1904, d. bef. 1978, with two living daughters - names withheld. Son of George Chamberlain, b. c1874, of Crawford Co., PA, and Edith S. Prusia, m. 27 Mar 1895, Spring Twp., Crawford Co., PA, with two other children listed: son, name withheld: Irene, b. 1 Mar 1900, who married Frank Baylor, with 2 children listed for her. His parents were natives of Pennsylvania. Edith S. Prusia was born 1874, Spring Twp., Crawford Co., PA, d. 1935, Jefferson, OH, daughter of George & Emma V. (Rushmore) Prussia. Data from LDS Ancestral File, submitted by Arlene Hanneman, 33702-A Chula Vista, Dana Point, CA 92629. This George Chamberlain appears to be the individual listed in the 1880 Census, as follows: - 1880 Census, Summit, Crawford Co., PA, Charles Chamberlain, p. 211B, head, age 27, laborer, PA/PA/PA; Sarah, wife, age 26, keeping house, PA/PA/PA; Elizabeth, dau., age 7, PA/PA/PA; George, son, age 6, PA/PA/PA; Fredrick, son, age 2 months, PA/PA/PA Jefferson, in Jefferson Co., OH, is about 100 miles due south from Ashtabula Co., but I suppose this could be the same family - more research would required to confirm this. Please also refer to my earlier suggestions to attempt to obtain marriage, death, obituary, burial and other records in Columbus for your Robert Earl Chamberlain, whose birth & death dates are known. Please contact me via Email, if you wish to discuss this information in any greater detail. I hope this information is helpful to you.

    1. [CHAMBERLIN] Lydia A. Chamberlin, b. c1839 MI, dau. of Desire Chamberlin, b. NY 1811-1813, long-time resident of Detroit
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AUI.2ACIB/207.1.1 Message Board Post: This family long-time Detroit family has been identified in the 1850, 1860, 1870 and 1880 Census in Detroit, with considerable identifying information available for them, gleaned just from these census records. Lydia A. appears to be the oldest child in the family, with the next children: Louisa, b. c1841, Daniel, b. 1841-1843, Erastus, b. c1845, and Charles M., b. c1847 (all in MI). In each census, Desire is listed without a husband, so it is likely he died 1847-1850, probably in Detroit. The 1880 Census shows that he was a native of Connecticut, as were Desire's parents. I don't have any record here that Desire's surname was Thompson, as you have listed it, though I do see one possible match in an IGI record, with a Desire W. Thompson, b. 15 Jan 1811, NY, d. 20 Aug 1889 (place not stated), dau. of Daniel Thompson, b. 1787, CT, and Susanne Bradley. I'd appreciate knowing what you have come up with in this regard. This Thompson family might be related to the family that Desire's son Daniel was living with in 1850: - 1850 Census, Detroit City, Wayne Co., MI, Daniel Chamberlain, p. 139, #89/89, age 8, b. MI, attends school, living w. Bradley Thompson, etc. The IGI lists a marriage of Bradley H. Thompson to Eleonora St. Amour, 14 Mar 1844, Detroit, Wayne Co., MI. Evidently Desire placed her two oldest children elsewhere in 1850, and kept the 3 younger children at home with her: - 1850 Census, Detroit, 27th District, Desire Chamberlain (female), p. 039, #892/114, age 39, b. NY; Louisa, age 9, b. MI; Erastus, age 5, b. MI; Charles, age 3, b. MI Lydia A. was evidently placed in the following family: - 1850 Census, Detroit, 27th District, Wayne Co., MI, Lydia Chamberlin, p. 130, #1570/1876, age 11, b. MI, attends school, living in boarding house, Samuel Barrett, etc. Daniel and Lydia were both back home, living with their mother and siblings, once again, in 1860. So, If this Chamberlin family lived in Detroit in 1840, which is very likely, there are only two families listed there who could be candidates: John Chamberlin, p. 177, and Roger Chamberlin, p. 181: 0000001-100001. John appears to be age 50-60, operating a hotel or institution of some sort, and I can't find anything more on him or his family. The data for Roger's wife (age 30-40), and daughter (age 0-5), match pretty well with data for Desire & Lydia A., and Roger is not listed in 1850 anywhere in the U. S. (I double-checked this). So, best guess is that Roger was born in CT, he was the husband of Desire, they were married about 1838 in CT, NY or MI, and he died 1847-1850, prob. Detroit. But I can't find any way to identify/trace this Roger Chamberlin. This needs to be done. Neither John or Roger appear in Detroit in the 1830 Census, and Roger is not listed as head-of-household anywhere else in the U. S. in 1830, unfortunately. It would certainly be helpful if you or someone else could obtain death records for Desire, or birth, marriage or death records for any of her children, to see what additional information they contain. Also, since Roger probably died 1847-1850 in Detroit, his death record should also be requested. Land, probate and other Detroit, Wayne Co., MI records (including early Detroit City Directories which I know begin in the 1830s) should also be examined. Please contact me via Email if you wish to discuss this information in greater detail.

    1. Re: [CHAMBERLIN] Re: Lydia J Chamberlin>IL>KS>OR
    2. Hi, I'm not sure if this will help, but Mr. Chamberlin may have been one of the two brothers of John G Chamberlin. John is in my line and had no children named Lydia, but he had two other brothers who could have married - William Chamberlin, III and Aaron Chamberlin. William was born in 1808 and Aaron in 1812. Their father was William Chamberlin Jr born 1771 in Hunterdon, NJ, married in NJ but moved to Michigan and died there. I know they were in Michigan by 1828 as that is when my gr gr gr grandmother was born. But I am not sure when they came. John Chamberlin was married to Rebecca Wilson and both are buried in Oak Hill Cemetery in Bloomfield, Oakland County, MI. - as is their father William Jr. and his wife Nelly (nee Sutphin). Let me know if any of this helps. Sylvia Link

    1. [CHAMBERLIN] John CHAMBERLAIN or CHAMBERLIN & Elizabeth LOBDELL plus BALLOU son-in-law
    2. Tim Sherman
    3. I'm looking for information regarding my ggg grandparents John CHAMBERLIN & Elizabeth LOBDELL. According to the LDS search info she was born ca 1806 in Westport, Essex Co., NY. The site also has her middle name as "Betsey". I've found one reference of a Betsey LOBDELL m. John CHAMBERLAIN from the New England Historical & Genealogical Society, but without any dates. The locality of the LOBDELL family is Westport, NY. NEHGS information lists Betsey's parents as Sylvanus LOBDELL & Eliza Ann KNAPP. My gg grandma Francis "Fannie" Fidelia CHAMBERLAIN was their daughter. Fannie was b. 23 Jul 1824, Westport, Essex Co., NY. She married Hiram BALLOU 11 Mar 1841, in Greggsville, Pike Co., IL. The 1880 Fed Census lists her father's birth place as RI. Hiram BALLOU was b. ca 1813, possibly in VT (according to the 1850 Census). I also have 29 Mar 1815, Westmoreland, Cheshire Co., NH as his birth information. Hiram's father was Ichabod BALLOU b. 4 May 1790, South Parish, Mendon, Worcester Co., MA, d. 9 May 1879, Keene, Cheshire Co., NH. Hiram's mother was Philia Philena BALLOU b. 1791 (she was a 4 cousin once removed from her husband), d. 1817. Both are descended from Maturin BALLOU & Hannah PIKE (I have some of the information, but not the documentation for tracing back to Maturin). If anyone can help me with information about these families, I'd be overjoyed. Thanks, Tim Sherman Oregon TimDS1957@mac.com

    1. [CHAMBERLIN] Frank(lin) CHAMBERLIN in Cleveland, OH
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AUI.2ACIB/205.1.1 Message Board Post: Here's some additional information. The Obituary Files of the Cleveland Public Library contain the following indexed statement from his obituary: "May 16, 1916; Source unknown; Chamberlin - Franklin L., father of Mrs. E. W. Moore, Frank H. Chamberlin, deceased, and Burt S., Sunday evening, at the home of his daughter. Funeral Tuesday, 2 p. m., from 11129 Euclid Ave." Franklin Chamberlin's mother, Sarah B. Shepard, was remarried, 26 Apr 1864, to Lucius M. Pitkin, b. 17 May 1825, Marshfield, Washington Co., VT, son of Dudley & Nancy (Batchelder) Pitkin. They are listed in the 1880 Census, as follows: - 1880 Census, Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH, p. 28C, Lucius M. Pitkins, age 55, manger iron works, VT/VT/VT; Sarah B. Pitkins, wife, keeping house, age 62, VT/VT/VT; Ina F. Pitkins, dau., single, age 18, at home, OH/VT/VT; Dudley Pitkins, father, widowed, age 81, at home, VT/VT/VT; Martha Pitkins, sister, single, age 53, at home, VT/VT/VT; also, Susan Collin, relationship "other", single, age 25, servant, IRE/IRE/IRE. So, this information shows that Franklin's mother Sarah B. Shepard, was born c1818, VT, and her parents were natives of Vermont. The IGI lists a marriage of John F. Chamberlin and Sarah B. Shepard, 3 Oct 1840, Foxboro, Norfolk Co., MA, which appears to be this same family - probably the parents of Franklin, who was born 13 months later in Cleveland. Lastly, in 1870, there was a Hamlin family living right next door to Franklin Chamberlin: - 1870 Census, Cleveland, Ward 4, Cuyahoga Co., OH, p. 437, #1796/1785, 6 Aug 1870, Hny? H. Hamlin, age 34, Patent Rgt. Agt., $2000, b. OH, Citizen; Jennie, age 30, k. house, b. OH; Fannie, age 6, b. OH; Marie, age 3, b. OH; Heny? S., age 1, b. OH; also Alfred Pearson, age 33, Ret. Dry Goods, $4000b. MA, U. S. Citizen; Sarah Pearson, age 72, b. MA; also Molog? Brodg--?, female, age 32, H. Servant, b. IRE, illiterate, parents of foreign birth Perhaps some of this additional identifying information will be helpful.

Franklin Luther Chamberlin, b. 15 Nov 1841, Cleveland, OH, d. there about May 15, 1916 [buried in Lakeview Cemetery], m. Louisa Snow Hamlen (date unknown), who d. 22 Jan 1912 in Cleveland, with three children listed for them: Louisa Snow Chamberlin, b. 17 Nov 1866, who m. Edward W. Moore; Frank Hamlen Chamberlin, b. 29 Jul 1870, who m. Alice Abigail Coleman; and Burt S./N. Chamberlin, who m. Marion Eleanor Coleman. My data are collected primarily from Mormon/LDS IGI records and from the Obituary files of the Cleveland Public Library, which contain the following record for Louisa: "January 24, 1912; Source unknown; Chamberlin - Louisa Hamlen, wife of F. L. Chamberlin and mother of Mrs. E. W. Moore, Burt S. Chamberlin, and the late Frank H. Chamberlin, Monday, Jan. 22, 1912, at her residence, 2227 E. 4! 0th St. Funeral Wednesday at 2 p. m." At the time of the 1880 Census, Louisa's mother was visiting Franklin's family in Cleveland, so the following listing will provide you with her first name (Cynthia), her age (born c1804), and the fact that her parents were natives of CT. Perhaps this information will assist you in tracing her. - 1880 Census, Cleveland, Cuyahoga Co., OH, p. 142D, Frank L. Chamberlain, head, age 37, Variety Iron W., OH/VT/VT; Lavina, wife, age 36, keeping house, OH/MY/CT; Louisa, dau., age 13, at school, OH/-/-; Frank, son, age 9, at school, OH/-/-; Bert, son, age 6, at school, OH/-/-; also Cyntha Hanlin, mother, age 76, widow, visiting, CT/CT/CT Franklin's ancestral line of descent is unknown, but he was evidently the son of John & Sarah (Shepard) Chamberlin, natives of Vermont, who I've not been able to locate in census records, but who probably died before 1860, when Franklin and his younger sister, Sarah J., b. c1845 OH, were living with the family of Lucius Pitkin, and attending school. At that time, curiously, Sarah owned property worth $6000, which suggests to me that she might have inherited the house or business property of her parents. If this was the case, Probate Records in the Cleveland area should reveal more about this family. Please contact me via Email if you wish to discuss this information in greater detail, or if you have additional Chamberlin data to share.
