Mar 1980, residence at time of death: Zip Code 94504 (includes Grand Rapids, Standale and Walker, Kent Co., MI), which indicates that, though he evidently died in Goshen, IN according to your posting, he was residing in the Grand Rapids area. I know nothing about Joseph's descendants, other than that a son, Austin W., is listed in the census (above), and a son, Joseph W. Chamberlain, Jr., of Beaufort, SC, is one of our World Chamberlain Genealogical Society members, and a regular correspondant of mine. Please contact me via Email if you wish additional information about this family's ancestry, or to learn about other persons researching branches of this family. One of them, by the way, cited Washington Co., IN, Book H-5, p. 21, Birth Records, for a reported birth date for Joseph of 3 Aug 1902, which is evidently incorrect, I see.

    3. Mr. Parker, Thank you so much for your fast and informative response! I do have a couple of things on the Chamberlains that I would be more than happy to share. One is a copy of the death notice of Oliver Chamberlain that ran in the Cambridge Garland newspaper on Friday, August 5, 1892. It is long and has quite a bit of personal information. It also states that he and Clarissa Baccus had 13 children, and that as of Aug. 5th 1892 only 7 were alive. I also have copys of several letters written to Isadora Chamberlain (my great great grandmother), from various relatives. And an obituary of A.P. Chamberlain - Isadora's brother, dated Nov. 11, 1917, and the newspaper article on his murder Thursday, Nov. 1, 1917. (He was killed by his brother Dr. A. W. Chamberlin) I have Isadora's death notice, and Caroline Chamberlin's death notice. I also have pictures of Isadora Chamberlain and her husband Sebastian Rubar, who wintered in with 31 others and helped found the town of Cambridge Iowa. Sebastian is buried in founders cemetery, land that he gave to the town while he was living, and they built a cemetery on for the founders. And the death notice of Sebastian and Isadora's only son, Charles Rubar. If you are interested in any of these, please let me know. I will be more than happy to share. All the best! In 1638 to escape Religious Persecution. I found a websight that had direct links and eventually took me back 14 generations beyond Henry. (Henry is 12 generations before me)...i was told that two Henry Chamberlain/lin's came to mass. In the 1600's...one a shoemaker, the other the blacksmith...it was said that the origins of the blacksmith are not known...in my research I was able to connect my henry to John Count of Tankerville...I would like as much info. As possible on John Count and John Earl and any other name connected with these individuals that may be of interest...I am trying to find out if they are connected to the shoemaker or blacksmith.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/AUI.2ACIB/231 Message Board Post: I received some information from a well known name on this BB, Mr. James Parker. I know now that I am a descendant of Henry the Blacksmith who apparently fled from England in aprox. 1638 to escape Religious Persecution. Somehow I stumbled across a sight on the net much like LDS. I found the Blacksmith and continued even further back, 14 generations. Some of the dates were obviously not accurate, so I am hoping to get more accurate dates on the info. and names I found. By following direct links and eventually went back 12 generations and found JOHN EARL OF TANKERVILLE born in 1070. It was noted that John Earl was LORD CHAMBERLAIN to King Henry I, England. The Earl's father, JOHN COUNT of TANKERVILLE, Castle, Normandy France, born 1040 was noted to be a companion of WILLIAM THE CONQUEROR. The Count's father was listed as SIR THOMAS OF BERWICK & CHILLINGHAM GREY, but the birth date was listed as 1359, obviously some of this info. is not correct. What I am trying to find out is if this is part of my family line or are these people the elders of Henry the SHOEMAKER. Mr. Parker said that as of this time he didn't know the origins of the Blacksmith...so that is what makes me wonder if this info. was connected to the wrong line. If Mr. Parker or anyone else can help me it would be greatly appreciated. In my discovery of this info. I have come across a new question as well...I have always been under the impression that Surnames were based on the individual's trade...in kingdoms there are positions of respect and power that are given titles...IE...The Earl, The Count, The Duke, ect...it appears that "Chamberlain" is also a title and that may have been how the last name came about. This is just a theory of mine. I would like to find out what a "chamberlain" was in/to a kingdom and also what the origin of the name CHAMBERLIN are. Lastly, I would like to find a family crest for Henry the Blacksmith. If anyone knows a good websight I can go to, please let me know. Thank you so much. Ashley M. Chamberlin, A1C, USAF

Chamberlin and Roxannah Covell, 19 Apr 1837, Dana, Worcester, MA. Their children can be found listed in census data. The 1850 Census lists the following two families living in the same dwelling: - 1850 Census, Dana, Worcester Co., MA, William N. Chamberlin, p. 325, #14/21, 26 Aug 1850, age 33, teamster, b. MA; Roxana, age 31, b. MA; Alphonzo, age 7, school, b. MA; Elmer W., age 1, b. MA - 1850 Census, Dana, Worcester Co., MA, p. 324, #14/20, 24-26 Aug 1850, Amasa Chamberlin, age 53, laborer, b. MA; Sarah C., age 46, b. MA; Laura E., age 21, b. MA; Charles S., age 18, farmer, school, b. MA; George W., age 16, farmer, school, b. MA; Harriet E., age 12, school, b. MA; Mary Jane, age 8, school, b. MA; Henry A., age 6, school, b. MA; Harden M., age 3, b. MA Note that these two families live in the same dwelling. The 1860 Census lists the following for William: - 1860 Census, Westfield, Hampden Co., MA, William N. Chamberlain, p. 844, #232/304, 7 Jun 1860, age 40, piano leg factory?, $150, b. MA; Abby, age 34, b. MA; Frank W, age 18, piano leg factory?, b. MA; Elmer W., age 11, attends school, b. MA; Ella I?, age 3, b. MA; John F., age 33, piano leg factory?, b. MA; also, @ #232/305; Edward Whitney, age 24, piano leg factory?, b. MA; Fanny L. Whitney, age 16, b. MA The 1870 Census lists the following for William: - 1870 Census, Westfield, Hampden Co., MA, Wm. Chamberlin, p. 367, #98/107, 7 Jun 1870, age 51, policeman, $300/$200, b. MA, U. S. Citizen; Abbie, age 44, keeping house, b. MA; Franklin, age 27, work in high school, b. MA, U. S. Citizen; Jennie, age 22, at home, b. MA; Elmer, age 21, at home, b. MA, U. S. Citizen; Emma, age 19, house keeping, b. MA; Ella, age 13, attending school, b. MA; also Mary Lattson?, age 32, housekeeping, b. ENG, parents of foreign birth; Bruce Lattson?, age 8, mulatto?, attending school, b. MA, mother of foreign birth So, you can see that William N. is very likely a son of Amasa [a fact which was previously completely unknown], and Ella is a daughter of William N., either by his wife Roxana, or by his next wife Abbie (further research in birth, marriage and death records in Massachusetts should permit you to determine which). William N. was born about 1819, probably Petersham, Worcester Co., MA. Based on the above census data, he is almost certainly the son of Amasa(7) Chamberlain, b. 14 Aug 1796, Petersham, Worcester Co., MA, d. after 1870, prob. Westfield, Hampden Co., MA, and his first wife Sylvia Skinner, b. c1798, d. bef. 1823, whom he married 11 Nov 1818, Dana, Worcester Co., MA. Amasa married 2nd) Sarah C. Gleason, 8 Mar 1823, in Petersham, with 9 children listed for them. The ancestral line of descent is listed as: Amasa(7), Samuel(6, Samuel(5), Samuel(4), John(3), John(2), William(1) Chamberlain. For your future reference, Amasa(7) is identified as LN9443 in the lineages of the Chamberlain/lin genealogist, David Conrad Chamberlin, Sr., who has prepared formal Family Group Records (FGRs) containing considerable information, for each generation on back to William(1) Chamberlain of Woburn & Billerica, MA, who was one of the five earliest immigrant Chamberlain ancestors in New England in the early 1600s. I'm hoping to locate someone from this family so that this wonderful old family treasure can be returned to the family. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: CHAMBERLAIN, CHAMBERLIN, DAFT, BOWERING, LEATHERLAND Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AUI.2ACIB/211.1.1 Message Board Post: Dear Mr. Parker, Thank you for the wonderful information! I am looking through the IGI Records from the LDS Church website as we speak for more information. The only marriage taking place in the County of Nottingham between a William Chamberlain/Chamberlin and Ann (Last name unknown) between 1795-1805 is one between William Chamberlain and Ann Bowering on 24 November 1800 in Markham, Nottingham which makes sense for the christening date you found for William in Newark-Upon-Trent, Nottingham on 9 August 1802 since he is the eldest son and the dates fit perfectly for such. Also, Markham and Newark-Upon-trent are only 18 miles from one another--very possible distance. Also, I think that Fanny Leatherland and Frances Leatherland are one and the same. The marriage record found for William Chamberlain and Frances Leatherland on 16 December 1828 in Radford, Nottingham and the christening of a Fanny (a common nickname for Frances) Leatherland on 15 July 1804 in the very same place (Radford) make it highly probable they are one and the same. I also found only one marriage taking place between a John Leatherland and a Hannah in Nottingham sometime before 1804 (John Leatherland and Hannah Daft on 28 March 1796 at St. Peter's Church in Nottingham (just a few miles from the area of Radford where Frances was christened). If you have anymore information, I'd love to hear from you. My friend is ecstatic and I continue searching through the IGI. His great grandfather was Charles B. Chamberlin, eldest son of Theophilus & Amy Chamberlain. My personal e-mail address if mlabrego@pobox.upenn.edu or guinnesscub@hotmail.com Looking forward to hearing from you. Most Sincerely, Miguel Labrego

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AUI.2ACIB/211.1 Message Board Post: Actually, his name is Theophilus, not Theodore, as listed in the 1860 Census when he was living in North W. Paterson, NJ, with his parents, William Chamberlain, age 54, and Frances, age 54, both born England. William H. Chamberlain (or Chamberlin), is listed in the 1850 Census in NYC, Ward 13, with his wife Frances and 3 children, all born England. As indicated by the ages and birth places of their 7 known children in Census records, they came to America from England between 1842 and 1848, and settled initially in NYC, it appears. Ref. GenForum posting, dated 11 Apr 1999, by Sue Pierce, for a query pertaining to this same family. William's wife is believed to be Frances Leatherland (not Leatherhand), whose marriage to William is listed in an IGI record as 16 Dec 1828, Radford, Nottingham. She might well be Fanny Leatherland, chr. 15 Jul 1804, there, daughter of John & Hannah, per IGI record. If so, she was a couple of years older than she reported consistently in the ! 1850-1870 Census in the U. S., which suggests that her husband might also have misrepresented his age. The only William I can see listed in IGI records as having been born in Nottingham in the 1802-1807 period of time is William Chamberlain, chr. 9 Aug 1802, Neward Upon Trent, Nottingham, son of William & Ann. I have no idea whether this is the same person - no way of knowing whether William himself even came from Nottingham, though this is a good assumption. One can see at least one William Chamberlain listed in the 1881 Census in Nottingham, who may or may not be related, so there are definitely traces of Chamberlain/lins in Nottingham that can be researched further. That's as far as I can take this analysis, and hope it is helpful to you. I could not locate either William or Frances in the 1880 Census in NJ, and presume they were deceased by this time. Several of William & Frances Chamberlin's children can be traced in Paterson, NJ, by the way - you mentioned Theo'! s older brother, Joseph, but daughter Sarah and her husband John Holli day were living right next door in 1870, and son Thos. H. is living elsewhere in Paterson in 1880 with his family. The 7 children are: William (birth date and place unknown); Sarah Ann, b. c1833; John H., b. c1835; Israel, b. c1837; Thomas, b. c1840; Joseph, b. c1842; Theophilus H. "Theo", b. c1847. I didn't take the time to try to trace all of them in all the available census records, etc., but this should be done, of course. Please contact me via Email if you wish to discuss this information in greater detail.
