Looking for information on the subject Chamberlins - they are father (John) and son. They are enumerated in the 1910 Federal Census, Cedar Falls, Black Hawk Co., Iowa - John is 65, a widower; (Ernest) Clifford is 34, his wife Pauline is30 and they have a 10 year old son, Ernest. Pauline dies 30 May 1961 in Cincinnati, Ohio. The name on her brief obituary is Pauline Chamberlin Osborne. I am trying to determine what happened to ERNEST CLIFFORD CHAMBERLIN. Another possible location for this family, between 1920/30 is Campbell County, Kentucky. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Flavia Hodges, San Pablo, CA

I've studied the Lincoln line quite thoroughly from his family down and unless behind Abraham's father there are no Lincolns. I've found nothing proven behind his father, although someone else might. There are Hanks from his mother's side, one being the actor Tom Hanks, but no male Lincoln descendents had children. Abe's father and brother were killed in a massacre. His only son to live to adulthood had no children. Good luck on your search. Glenora Chamberlin

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AUI.2ACIB/239.1 Message Board Post: Robin has previously posted queries in Ancestry.com and GenForum sites, but this is the first mention of Alfred's second family! I've been helping Robin trace her Chamberlain/lin ancestry over the past month or so, and a detailed account of our surprising findings can be found in my GenForum Chamberlain posting dated 22 Dec 2004, listing the ancestral line of descent as Alfred Hilton(9), Benjamin(8), Ephraim Elliot(7), Nathaniel(6), Nathaniel(5) [Rev. War Soldier in VT], Richard(4), Nathaniel(3), Joseph(2), Richard(1) Chamberlain of Braintree, MA, one of the five original immigrant ancestors in New England in the early 1600s. Considerable other information about this extended family is also listed in my posting. Persons seeking additional information about this Chamberlain/lin line are requested to contact me via Email. Regarding Robin's search for Alfred's second family, she never mentioned it to me during our correspondence, so I haven't worked on this issue, of course, and have nothing to offer her now other than rather standard advice that her research be continued in available U. S. & Canadian census and other records in the areas listed, for traces of this second family. I'm going to search the 1930 U. S. census next, to see what I find... In addition to Railroad records from 1941 (which Robin believes were destroyed), it is also possible that a lawsuit might have ensued over conflicting claims to Alfred's pension or property, or over monetary damages involved in Alfred's accidental death in 1941, so court records should be checked, most likely right there in Winnepeg. Newspaper accounts of his death, etc., may also reveal more, and published telephone and residential directories might reveal traces of this second family there in the Winnepeg area, or the other locations Rob! in mentioned where Alfred or other family members were known to have resided. Alfred's probate record should also be examined, of course. Since he died, most likely intestate, with underage children, it is almost certain that probate records are available, which would also, almost certainly make reference to any other persons making claims on Alfred's estate. Alfred's marriage to Muriel Grawbarger was dated 6 Jun 1912, Sudbury, Sudbury, Ont., Canada, with 8 known children listed after that, some of whom have been traced. Robin has begun to obtain information from living descendants, including one living daughter Gloria, whose memory is no longer good, but more of these descendants have yet to be contacted, any of whom might know more. By way of a time frame, since Alfred and Muriel were married when he was only 20, it stands to reason that his other family came later - with children somewhat younger.than his first family, perhaps born after 1930 or so, some of whom should still be alive, one would think. This is speculation on my part, of course. Perhaps someone in this second family line will respond to Robin's posting here - hopefully so! Some of Robin's close relatives attended a family Reunion in Ottawa in 1984, but have been unable to locate any records of it among their effects. However, accounts of this Reunion have been published, and republished in recent years, partially because this Philemon Wright - Chamberlin family (several intermarriages) of Hull, Quebec, and Ottawa, Ont. (across the river from each other), were early pioneers there in 1801, and prominant in the early history of the area. Robin is in the process of trying to contact these knowledgable persons who wrote these histories (evidently her distant cousins), as well as to other contact persons who have been researching various branches of this family (as listed in my own research records here). It is unlikely, of course, that any of these persons would know the actual identity of Alfred's other family (evidently kept a secret from other family members while he was living), but certainly possible that other persons in this extende! d family would have heard about the Alfred Chamberlin who was killed in a railroad accident in 1941 and had a second, secret family. One would suppose that such rather dramatic information would have been grist for discussion at a family Reunion, even 43 years later! I'll continue to help Robin, as best I can, trace various branches of her family, to the extent I can do so, but I do hope I hear back from other persons belonging to this family!

I am searching for any information pertaining to Alfred Hilton Chamberlin. He is son of Benjamin Chamberlin of Sudbury, Ontario, Canada. He died in a railway accident in June of 1941 when he was squished between two cars. After his death it was discovered he had two seperate families... one in Winnipeg and another elsewhere in Canada. I am a relation of the Winnipeg family. He married Muriel Grawbarger of Renfrew, Ontario, Canada and had 6 sons and 2 daughters. Some remained in Winnipeg, many moved to B.C. We have reason to believe the "other" family may reside in Sudbury or Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. Any help would be great. I have already checked with the Candian government re: railway records and they said there is no way of tracing this other family. Most railway companys dispose of their records after a certain period. Any information would be great. I will share information! Robin Dudgeon Winnipeg, MB

Every little bit helps! In my earlier posting, I listed the 1850 census data for this family, so here are the 1850-1880 Census listings, for reference: - 1860 Census, Detroit, 3rd Ward, Mrs. Chamberlen, p. 216, #1294/1382, 15 Aug 1860, age 48, -/$300, b. NY; Lydia, age 21, teacher in common schools, b. MI; Louisa, age 19, b. MI; Daniel, age 17, clerk b. MI; Susan, age 16, school, b. MI; Erastus, age 15, school, b. MI; Charles, age 13, school, b. MI; several other persons listed, seemingly unrelated - 1870 Census, Detroit, 6th Ward, Wayne Co., MI, Desire Chamberlin, p. 358, #460/490, 21 Jun 1870, female, age 58, keeping house, -/$800, b. NY; Lydia, age 30, sewing, b. MI; Louise, age 28, at home, b. MI; Daniel, age 26, clerk in store, b. MI, U. S. Citizen; Erastus, age 23, R. R. clerk, b. MI, U. S. Citizen; Charles M., age 21, clerk in store, b. MI, U. S. Citizen - 1880 Census, Detroit, Wayne Co., MI, Desire W. Chamberlin, p. 265C, head, widow, age 67, keeping house, NY/CT/CT; Lydia A., dau., single, age 34, at home, MI/CT/NY; Louisa, dau., single, age 31, at home, MI/CT/NY; Charles M., son, single, age 28, clerk in leather store, MI/CT/NY; Leroy F., grandson, age 8, MI/CT/NY The 1880 Census confirms that Desire's husband was a native of Connecticut, and also confirms that she was a widow, but we still know nothing else about him, other than they were married about 1838, perhaps in NY State, or in Michigan, and that he probably died between 1847-1850, probably in Detroit. I've rechecked everything I can here, by computer, and can find no trace of him, but still believe he is likely the Roger Chamberlin listed there in Detroit in 1840 (data listed in previous posting). Here are some data dug out by another terrific researcher, Jeannette Voiland, of Seattle (not related to your family), from index cards to Wayne Co., MI, Probate Records she copied in Lansing: Wayne County Probate Court Records, Detroit, MI, Card Index File, lists Estate of Susan Thompson, Detroit, MI., File #14026, dated 1888. Chamberlains listed include Desire W. Thompson, her daughter; and grandchildren Erastus H.; Leroy F.; Louisa M.; and Lydia A. (all of Detroit; and grandson Charles M. of Kalamazoo. Please note that Desire was living in Detroit in 1888, according to this record, together with some of her family, and you can probably find them listed in city directories. So, this probate index indicates that this probate record does not mention Desire Thompson's son-in-law, the unidentified husband of her daughter, Desire Chamberlain, probably since he was long dead, yet it is possible that there is some clue to his identity in that particular probate file, if you wish to look it up. I did recently make a comprehensive listing of all Chamberlains (all spellings) listed in this Wayne Co., MI Probate index file from the data collected by Jeannette Voiland, which covers c1814-c1901, and I can assure you that I do not see this Roger listed as having a probate file. But, of course, he could have died elsewhere and have had a probate record in some other county or state, or perhaps his estate simply wasn't probated, though this is unlikely since he had underage children at the time. We don't even know, for sure, that he was dead by 1850 - he may have abandoned his family and died somewhat later, but, if so, he does not turn up in census r! ecords thereafter, as he should if he were alive. Maybe he went to California to dig for gold in 1848! Now, since the IGI lists Desire W. (Thompson) Chamberlain's death as 20 Aug 1889 (where? - probably in Detroit), one can attempt to find her probate record, death record, and so forth. You can probably order a copy of her death certificate there in Wayne Co., if she died there, and, if you wish, I can put you in touch with Jeannette and she can tell you how she traced the probate records, though I don't find Desire's probate listed anywhere in the same Wayne Co. MI list, so she perhaps died elsewhere, or left no estate. You can also search for obituary and burial records for Desire in Wayne Co., and State of Michigan records. Beyond that, vital records, etc., can also be traced for her children, and these records should, some of them, list the names of their father. These children were evidently all born in Michigan, probably in Detroit, and some of them can no doubt be traced and their records recovered, and perhaps even some living descendants could be found who! might know something. Maybe you can figure out other ways to trace this family, over time - hopefully so! That's the best I can recommend to you at this time. Please do keep me posted by Email, if you please, as your research progresses: <jbparker@provide.net>. I'd like to learn how this comes out.

Her ancestry is unknown. She is probably related somehow to Benjamin Chamberlain and Martha "Patty" Byram, of Sparta, Sussex Co., NJ, the progenitors of a whole line of descendants there in that area of New Jersey, whose descendants, in the Chamberlain Family Association, hold an annual Reunion, and who are very active in the World Chamberlain Genealogical Society. So you can direct your query to them through the WCGS, if you wish, and see whether these persons can help you any. This Benjamin Chamberlain has been the subject of extensive research through the years, with a book written by A. J. Fretz about him and his descendants, as perhaps you are aware. He had 13 children, including 9 sons, all of whom have been traced except for one who probably died young. A couple of these sons were married before 1803, so could possibly be a parent of your Rebecca. But none of them has a known daughter listed whose name is Rebecca, except for one, and she was born 5 May 1816 and died young. It is possible that Benjamin's brother John was the father or grandfather of Rebecca, but this is a long shot - John's descendants have never been traced. John was living in Hardiston, Sussex Co., NJ in 1793, but it is believed he moved to William Co., VA in 1798 and later to Caswell Co., NC, so, you see, this is not a very good possibility. Please contact me via Email if you wish to discuss sources, contact persons, and other details concerning this family, and I'd be pleased to help you in any way I can.

I am looking to see if anyone has any information on Alfred Hilton Chamberlin. He was born c. 1890 in Kingston, Frontenac, Ontario and died June June 21, 1941 In a train accident in Winnipeg, MB. He was married to Muriell Grawbarger June 6, 1912 in Sudbury, Ontario. One son Benny died of Pnemonia and Double Pleurisy at the age of 14, a daughter Hannah Fay Vida died of crib death. A daughter Gloria lives in Vancouver, a son Arthur runs a lighthouse in BC. My relation Charles Robert (aka Bob) Chamberlin married Jeanne Marie LeBas and had 5 daughters. I also know that after Alfred Hilton's death two families tried to collect the money from it. One was Muriel's family here in Winnipeg and the other family is unknown to us but apparently was from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario. I have heard another story from a family member about our ancestry. Apparently our first Chamberlin we know of landed at Plymouth Rock and settled in Salem, Mass. USA. Eventually the family moved to Pennsylvania and then to Ottawa, Ontario. In Ontario they got involved in politics. I dont' know what happened from there on. There was a family reunion in Ottawa c. 1985 at a big house with a crater lake and a "mountain". There was a very large family tree that was posted up on the walls. I was too young to attend and my family cannot remember anything more about this family. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
