I have a Lydia J Chamberlin from Illinois who married John B. Forbes in Tazewell County, IL. I was searching on one of thier son's William A. Forbes when I finally found them listed on his death certificate. It appears John B died before William was 16 and Lydia remarried. I've been having some problems straightening out what happened. If you could share your knowledge with me, that would be great! Oh! William's family ended up in Seattle, WA during the logging days. Rebecca Forbes yellow_maple01@hotmail.com

Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.chamberlin/428.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My research notes, Vonnie, indicate that we corresponded via Email in late Nov. 2003, at which time I indicated that I could not positively trace this family in census data - there are several candidates in 1870 & 1880 who match, more or less, the name, age and locations you provided for William Frederick Chamberlin, b. Jan 1867, PA, who married Annie Maria Knepp (daughter of Solomon and Evanna Knepp of Lewistown, Mifflin Co., PA), with children born probably in Sunbury, Northumberland Co., PA, beginning Feb 1890. This is still the problem. More intensive research in Northumberland and Mifflin counties should reveal more. The initial priority for a focused search, I would suppose, would be to locate death (vital), burial, and obituary records, to see what they reveal, if anything about William's identity and origins somewhere in PA. Local historical and genealogical societies in these counties can be contacted for advice and assistance. Please contact me via Email, if y! ou wish, for additional discussion of this information, including the best candidates I identified in the census data (which I reviewed once again, just now).

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AUI.2ACIB/8.1 Message Board Post: I spent a couple of hours just now, struggling with census data, to trace this family on back, and have managed to positively connect it with a Chamberlain ancestral lineage in my Chamberlain research files here. Sidney Chamberlain, b. c1873, Missouri, prob. Dallas, DeKalb Co., is the son of William Chamberlain, b. 2 Apr 1850, Princeton, Bureau Co., IL, d. 2 Jan 1925, whose wife was named Nancy. I have very little information on them, but here's a census listing for them: - 1880 Census, Dallas, DeKalb Co., MO, Wm. Chamberlain, p. 215B, head, age 29, IL/VT/IL; Nancy, wife, age 29, MO/-/-; Sidney, son, age 7, MO/IL/MO; Virginia, dau., age 1, MO/IL/MO. William is 1 of 7 known children of Ebenezer (7) Chamberlain, b. 18 Nov 1821, prob. Putney, Windham Co., VT, d. Feb 1899, prob. Grand River, Daviess Co., MO, whose was married 1849, prob. in Illinois,, to Elizabeth Boyd, b. 2 Jan 1822, IL, d. 2 Apr 1915, perhaps Grand River, MO - her parents were natives of NY State. Called "Eben", he moved to Daviess Co., MO, about 1861-62. The ancestral line of descent is listed as: Nathaniel(6), Thaddeus Stone(5), Jacob(4), Jacob(3), Jacob(2), William(1), one of the five original Chamberlain immigrant ancesters in early New England. Please contact me via Email if you wish to discuss this information in greater detail.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AUI.2ACIB/265.1 Message Board Post: Following is a copy of the response I posted to your 24 Nov 2004 posting in this forum. You are not the first person, Sandie, to attempt to trace this Rebecca Chamberlin, b. 1803, Jefferson Twp., Morris Co., NJ. Her ancestry is unknown. She is probably related somehow to Benjamin Chamberlain and Martha "Patty" Byram, of Sparta, Sussex Co., NJ, the progenitors of a whole line of descendants there in that area of New Jersey, whose descendants, in the Chamberlain Family Association, hold an annual Reunion, and who are very active in the World Chamberlain Genealogical Society. So you can direct your query to them through the WCGS, if you wish, and see whether these persons can help you any. This Benjamin Chamberlain has been the subject of extensive research through the years, with a book written by A. J. Fretz about him and his descendants, as perhaps you are aware. He had 13 children, including 9 sons, all of whom have been traced except for one who probably died young. A couple of these sons were married before 1803, so could possibly be a parent of your Rebecca. But none of them has a known daughter listed whose name is Rebecca, except for one, and she was born 5 May 1816 and died young. It is possible that Benjamin's brother John was the father or grandfather of Rebecca, but this is a long shot - John's descendants have never been traced. John was living in Hardiston, Sussex Co., NJ in 1793, but it is believed he moved to William Co., VA in 1798 and later to Caswell Co., NC, so, you see, this is not a very good possibility. Please contact me via Email if you wish to discuss sources, contact persons, and other details concerning this family, and I'd be pleased to help you in any way I can.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AUI.2ACIB/264.1 Message Board Post: The Mary Chamberlin who married Georges Payette was born about 1872 or 1875, prob. Old Chelsea, Gatineau Valley area, Quebec , one of 8 or 9 known children of Josiah(7) Chamberlin, b. 1826 there [not 1845 as you have it listed], d. 1915, Calgary, Alberta, by his wife Anne Mulvihill, b. 1834, Farm Point, Quebec, d. 22 Oct 1876, Old Chelsea, Que., dau. of John & Julia (Ryan) Mulvihill. Here's some census data for this family: - 1881 Census, Hull, Ottawa, Quebec, Canada, p. 86, household 370, Josiah Chamberlain, widowed, age 54, mechanic, Baptist; Howard, age 17, farmer, Catholic; Anna, age 14, Catholic; Josiah, age 12, Catholic; Mary, age 9, Catholic; John, age 8, Catholic; Mary, age 6, Catholic; Julia, age 4, Catholic; Philip, age 3, Catholic; all persons born Quebec. Living next door is the family of Charles Chamberlain, Josiah's brother. Though the census lists the surname spelling as Chamberlain (which is correct for earlier generations), family records list it as Chamberlin in later generations. According to family tradition, Josiah(6), together with three of his brothers - Thomas, John & Leonard - came to the Gatineau area from Lowell, MA, (originally from Merrimack, Hillsborough Co., NH), together with Philemon Wright [an older gentleman, b. 1760, Woburn, MA - buried in St. James Church Cemetery in Hull, Quebec] in the early 1800s, to work in the mills. The Chamberlin family was heavily involved in millwork in the Chelsea area of Gatineau for many years, and some Chamberlin relatives still live in the area. Actually, this account isn't quite right, because these Chamberlin brothers were still quite young in the early 1800s, and probably came to Gatineau c1823 when Josiah, "age 27" applied for a land patent there. The ancestral line of descent is listed as: Josiah(6), Josiah(5), "Souhegan" John(4), Samuel(3), Thomas(2), Thomas(1) Chamberlain, one of the five original Chamberlain immigrant ancestors in the early 1600s in New England. Please contact me via Email if you wish to discuss this information in greater detail, including contact persons (your cousins). I am not related to this family, but I do have considerable reseatch data about it, that I've gathered in my Chamberlain/lin files here.

    1. Dr. William H. H. Chamberlin & brother Dr. E. K. Chamberlin of Beaver Co., PA
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/AUI.2ACIB/263 Message Board Post: I'm posting the following information, for general interest to other readers, and to seek further information on these individuals. Hist. of Beaver Co., PA, pp. 373-374, provides the following account: William H. H. Chamberlin was born in Litchfield, Conn., June 22, 1810. He graduated in 1834 from the College of Physicians and Surgeons of New York City. The same year he came to New Brighton, where he formed a partnership with Dr. E. K. Chamberlin, which lasted eight years. He died December 21, 1847, in New Brighton, of typhus fever. E. K. Chamberlin, a brother of the preceeding, practised his profession in New Brighton for some years successfully. In 1842 he removed to Cincinnati, Ohio, and later served as a surgeon in Taylor's army in the Mexican War. He was a great favorite with the troops, who lovingly nick-named him "Old Medicine." Afterwards he served in the Mexican Boundary Survey and as State Senator in California. During the cholera epidemic of 1834, Dr. Chamberlin was very active in the work of relief. He died in 1852 or 1853, while on his way from Panama to San Francisco. That's all I know about Dr. William H. H. Chamberlin, but I've dug out the following additional information on his brother: West Virginia Archives & History Internet site, located through Google, contains a letter written at Monterey, Mexico, by Dr. E. K. Chamberlin, Surgeon of the First Regiment Ohio Volunteers, under date of April 23, 1847, says: "The Virginia Regiment under Colonel Hamtramck escorting a train of one hundred and eighty wagons from Comargo, arrived here yesterday. They have been sixteen days on the way, having been detained by heavy rains. They were obliged to build several bridges over streams that three weeks ago had not a drop of water in them. The Regiment is one of the largest and finest appearing ones I have seen in the field. The officers are generally military men of experienc[e] and appear to be gentlemen of high honor and bearing. The 'Old Dominion' may well feel proud of the force she has sent into the field." From Monterey, the march was continued by way of Santillo to Buena Vista. No braver Regiment did battle on the plains of Mexico than this." - 1840 Census, New Brighton Borough, Beaver Co., PA, E. K. Chamberlin, p. 002: 100011-10002 (age 30-4)) 1 person employed as Learned Professionals & Engineers - 1850 Census, Cincinnati, Ward 7, Hamilton Co., OH, E. K. Chamberlain, male, p. 429, #1117/1537, 29 Aug 1850, age 45, physician, b. CT; Kendrick H., age 13, b. PA; Edward K., age 6, b. OH; living with family of Elijah Kendrick, age 55, physician, b. NY; Lydia, age 57, b. CT; Oscar D., age ? (omitted), physician, b. NY; also other persons listed So, I'd like to hear back from anyone with additional information on this family, its hisory, origins, and descendants. I've posted an identical message in GenForum Chamberlin & Beaver Co. sites.
