    3. Hi Sue, Thanks for your note. I am not familiar with the CDIB cards. Can you give me more info. on this? My gggrandfather was Choctaw ,but he did not go to OK. with his father{ white-mother Choctaw. From his estate papers and a relative we learned about all of his family ,except him and a brother, going to OK. A niece of his went out abt. 1907 and proved her connection. Through the estate papers we can prove she was his niece. This is all the proof we have at the present that he was the son of Daniel Anderson. Is that enough to get any kind of papers. I would appreciate any help you can give. 3. I hope you don't mind if I but in here, but maybe I can give some information. I know that this is not fair, but it is the way it is. The CDIB stands for " Certificate of Degree of Indian Blood" and is given by the US Department of the Interior Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) Only people who have a CDIB cards can become members of the tribe. Only people who can prove "Direct" descendant from a ancestor who enrolled on the "Dawes Rolls' can get a CDIB card. Even if your ancestor was on rolls taken before the Dawes, but did not enroll on the Dawes, you will not be eligible. You must prove "Direct" descendant. Your Direct ancestor must have enrolled on the Dawes Rolls Example: A full blood Choctaw man has two sons, but this Choctaw man dies before being enrolled on the Dawes. One of his sons (1) proves his Choctaw blood and is enrolled on the Dawes. The other son(2) for what ever reason (see below) does not, and is not enrolled. The descendants of son (1) if they can prove their ancestor was son (1) will be eligible for CDIB cards and tribal membership. The descendants of son (2) will not be eligible for a CRIB card and tribal membership, even if they can prove a connection to the first son and the father. REQUIREMENTS FOR ENROLLMENT 1. Applications had to be submitted during the enrollment period (1899 to 1906) 2. Membership by blood, intermarriage, or adoption into the Tribe 3. Actual residence within the area occupied by the Tribe Persons born after March 4, 1906 were not eligible for enrollment Congress closed the rolls as of March 4, 1907 In a lot of cases people of Indian blood were excluded from the rolls because they did not meet the residency requirements. Some chose not to be included because of the social stigma attached to being Indian at that time. I hope this has help with your understanding of what a CDIB card is and who can get one. As you can see it does not prove who is and who is not Choctaw. Both sons are Choctaw, and the descendants of both have a ancestor who was full blood Choctaw and should be proud of there Choctaw heritage.
