    3. Fay and Patsy, thanks so much for the quick responses. I have a list starting with where in the State of Mississippi they were located (very important so I can create my fictional town close by) and what contact they had with non-Native Americans of that area around 1855-1865. Thanks again, Katie who will post more questions tomorrow if that's ok.

    3. The following is taken from "After Removal, the Choctaw in Mississippi" Edited by Samuel J. Wells and Roseanna Tubby, Chapter 1 by Ronald N. Satz page 18: "Some 180 Choctaw men living in the counties carved out of the 1830 land cession were mustered into the service of the Confederacy in 1862. Their unit, the First Mississippi Choctaw Infantry Battalion, was trained and led by whites and was assigned to the Department of Mississippi and Eastern Louisiana under Lieutenant-General John C. Pemberton. The entire battalion was surrounded and captured while it trained at Camp Moore in Louisiana in 1863 during the Vicksburg campaign. The fate of these soldiers remains a mystery, but their kinfolk in Mississippi assumed that they had been sent to the West. The loss of so large a number of men, together with the turmoil and disruption of the war and Reconstruction, undoubtedly encouraged the Choctaw to remain as inconspicuous as possible." 3. The largest concentration of Choctaw in MS would be in the Philadelphia, MS area which is Neshoba County. Some of the towns around are: Arlington, Burnside, Spring Creek, Fairgrounds, Dixon, McDonald, Williamsville and DeWeese.
