Barbara I love it, please include in your next book. Our gnats here are nice friendly not biting kind. Worst we have are giant gallon-nipper skeeters, deerflies, & the ever vicious no-see-ums. Skin so soft works okay for most of them. Sometimes the deerflies get bad even out on the beaches. You'd think the wind off the water would keep them away. Barbs right if we did way from with them all something would be out of balance. Marcie

After the Civil War, when the army could turn its full attention to "the Indian problem" Generals Sherman (and the man's middle name was Tecumseh!) and Sheridan did the same thing. Their idea or their superiors? Does it really matter? Still later, Sheridan became an Indian agent out here on the Grande Ronde Rez. Believe it or not, the Indians said he was a very good agent. Seems the man was just really good at following whatever orders he was given. If you're really looking for a good excuse to get angry though, try this quote: In 1763 Lord Jeffrey Amherst, English Noble and Commander for whom the city of Amherst, NJ is named, gave blankets from the smallpox hospital with the orders, "Infect the Indians with sheets upon which the smallpox patients have been lying, or by any other mens which will serve to exterminate this accursed race." The Ft. Pitt Commander offered to parley with the Indians and make them gifts of the blankets. Do you have these where you live? They appear as clouds some times cuz there are so many in the swarm and there are all ways many swarms as well. I do understand your reasoning, I think. Some thing like upsetting the balance of nature..... I agree, don't want to eradicate them, just repel them from my property so I can work in the garden and yard with out getting eaten up by them. Here it's the gnats, then mosquitoes, then flies and snakes you have to watch for. Coyotes are getting pretty brave as well... kids just saw one in the front yard. I LOVE Oklahoma!!!!!!!!
