Hi Theresa: Thanks for asking. It's not like we fill in census forms every so often! Sandi :)
You go girl, the number of NA that do not have dark skin eyes or hair are to numerous to count. Besides the thinking that all full Indians have brown eyes is incorrect. The pure Choctaw pre white/Spanish/Mexican/Black blood had Black eyes not brown. Coal black hair not brown. So.......... There are allot out there who have CDIB that say full but somewhere at sometime there was a different blood mixed. We go to schools and teach elem. children that all NA are not alike unlike what Hollywood would have you believe. One principal said that they had ask these other people to come before (ones that I know are Mexican playing like Indians no proof, no names no census cards no nothing that they are NA & one white guy who I know that has changed his Tribal affiliation three times since I first met him) anyway, she said, Well I thought that they were more Indian, they had pony tales ;-/ Theresa Harrison, Liaison Okla Chahta Clan of CA Inc ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, February 12, 2000 6:50 AM Subject: Re: [CHAHTA] Native Census Info > I'm going to put NA - Oklahoma Choctaw, we need all the help we can get. > I know they will probably question me since I don't have dark skin, eyes or > hair but their problem, not mine! > > > ==== CHAHTA Mailing List ==== > Home Page: > http://freepages.cultures.rootsweb.com/~choctaw/index.htm > Choctaw Chat: > http://freepages.cultures.rootsweb.com/~choctaw/chat.htm > >

Hi Theresa: On the census form are you allowed to put in more than one line of Native American blood? I have several. Or, do you pick the line in which you have the most blood? Thanks, Sandi :)
Hi Folks, I got my Choctaw Language Workbook and Tapes in the mail today. I'm ready for February 22, 2000 to get here. I hope that I am a lot of you as classmates. I am excited and hope that we all put out some effort to bring us all closer together Until later Ellen
I'm going to put NA - Oklahoma Choctaw, we need all the help we can get. I know they will probably question me since I don't have dark skin, eyes or hair but their problem, not mine!
Question - I have my CDIB but I'm only 1/32 Choctaw. I never know what to put on application - caucasion or NA. I'm new at this - tribal name? Also, I never was in the 1990 census, what do I do if they miss me again?
Please answer the census as OKLAHOMA Choctaw for your whole family. It is my understanding from our last Chief that if you only put Choctaw it goes to Mississippi. you must specify Oklahoma. To fill out an application or birth cert. for a new baby no one can tell you what to do. Your heart must tell you. If you love your Choctaw heritage and are proud and live your life Choctaw, by all means put that you are Choctaw Indian. Otherwise, if your heart tells you it is sorta cool to be Choctaw but your heart and mind say that you are white. The answer is clear. Remember weather you are full blood or another degree, when you claim your heritage, that makes the numbers go up on NA for federal information. Tribes get their funding for medical, etc. on the number of NA people. So regardless of your degree you are helping your people when you claim her birth right. FORWARDED TO LIST: This came to me instead of the Choctaw-Southeast List.. I thought I would post it here for those who are interested. Makrie >Date: Fri, 11 Feb 2000 15:37:46 -0800 (PST) >Old-Date: Fri, 11 Feb 2000 15:37:53 -0800 >From: "Andre P. The answer is the 2000 Census. Current funding level is based on the results of the 1990 Census. American Indians were severely undercounted in 1990, which resulted in severe reductions in funding and services throughout the entire country. Census data is what is used to determine not only CSBG funding levels, but virtually every federal program that benefits American Indians and Alaska Natives (e.g., education, housing, health, energy assistance, job training, child care, head start). We need to make sure Indian people are not undercounted again in the 2000 Census. Make sure your tribal members understand the critical need for an accurate count. You can assure them that all answers provided are strictly confidential, with no way to connect answers or personal information to an individual. Provide the following information to your tribal members on how to answer the Census: o Check Indian as the only race listing no other admixture (white, black, etc.) o Enter the name of your tribe using only 19 letters. o Check with tribal officials to ensure everyone in the tribe is using the same tribal name with the same spelling. o Make sure that the person #1 on the Census lists as Indian, because everyone in the household will be counted as the same race as #1. Be sure to have a tribal representative attend any Inter-Tribal Complete Count Committee meetings that may be being held in your area. -------------------- The 2000 Census surveys will be mailed out on March 20 to all residential addresses. April 4 is the actual count day, when those without residential addresses will be counted. There will also be a house-to-house canvassing of homes that do not return the mail-out surveys. Lets make sure that WE are not undercounted in the 2000 Census. -- André Cramblit, Operations Director The Northern California Indian Development Council ( http://www.ncidc.org ) NCIDC is a non-profit organization that helps meet the social, educational, and economic development needs of American Indian communities.
