    3. All of my life, I had simply used Indian. Yes, I know there are people from India and that people first coming here called the native people here Indians because they were looking for a route to India. It's just in the last few years that things have gotten so tangled up. Choctaw or any other tribal name is the only way to refer to someone if you know, but I just don't want to feel bad and what's more, don't want to make anyone else feel bad if I say the wrong thing. 3. I would absolutely think it more appropriate to say Choctaw if you know. I think a lot of the time the "Native American" is used when someone doesn't know what tribe, only that someone is Indian and think they are being more "politically correct" to say Native American. I think trying to be "politically correct" has made a lot of us into insecure blubbering idiots that only succeed in sticking our foot in our mouths and loose the sincerity of our hearts. fay ----- Original Message ----- From: Tammy Jones <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, August 21, 2000 10:04 PM Subject: Re: [CHAHTA] Is there an "exact" answer > Although you are right Fay, there is no "exact" answer most of the Choctaws > I know do not like to be called "Native American". 3. Tammy I agree. When I talk with other Indians I always say Chahta and most non Indians. But there are times for what ever reason I will just say Indian. One of the reasons I was given for disliking the term Native American is the work Native seems to bring to mind savages or wildness. I wish I had kept all of the answers but I never even thought it. 3. The thing is, most American Indians that I know when asked "what are you" don't say "Native American or American Indian" They would say only "Choctaw" or what ever tribe they are a member of. But most reject the term "Native American" and only use it when they have to, say on some government form. They don't like American Indian, but prefer it to "Native American". This is only my opinion but I would like to see us use the word "Choctaw" or Chahta" when we refer to our ancestors and not "Native American" All people born in the USA are "Native American". 3. When people are involved, is there ever an "exact" answer? Is it ever insulting to be called "Native American"? I realize that "Native American" has been used in more recent times in an effort to be more considerate of others and to not be demeaning and to show respect. You can get in a lot of trouble though, if you don't know what is "respect" to the person you are talking to. Fay

    3. Tammy: I use Indian or American Indian. I did a little person survey on this one time since I'm on several list. I got tons of different opinions. I listed preference for, Indian, American Indian, Native American. They end up by preference in that order. I found it pretty interesting. I would like to hear the opinions of the list members and why they prefer it, also. This was a good, or to me anyway, suggestion. 3. I have friends at the Pine Ridge rez and I have noticed that a lot of times there is a remark of "First Nation" or "First People". In some NA languages when translated they are referring to themselves as "human beings". Do you think there is different meanings for different tribes or maybe different locations or territories? fay

    3. Hi Tammy, That's a good idea. Lots and lots find ourselves not knowing which way to turn. Especially those of us who either (1) know there isn't much NA blood in our veins and (2) can't even prove that part. We feel a little out of tune and wish to learn from those that are, how would you say, more NA. See how awkward you can feel. It's hard. Guys how about us using this list too. fay ----- Original Message ----- From: Tammy Jones <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, August 21, 2000 9:05 PM Subject: Re: [CHAHTA] testing > I don't think anyone is posting to this list. 3. I don't think anyone is posting to this list.
