The Choctaw language was not a written language...there are no absolutely correct ways of spelling Chata words..we spell it like we first saw it and/or the way it sounds...so you'll see different spellings quite often, but that's not a dialect difference...that's a whole 'nother thing. The Leni Lenape people who would become many tribes, one of which was Cherokee, trace their lineages back to the people who came across this supposed land bridge. The "Wallum Olum" is a fascinating account of this and I would reccomend it to anyone interested in the origins of Native Peoples. The Wallum Olum consisted of "wooden tablets" with entries showing the trip across the Beiring Straight and ends with an entry that reads something like, "White people in Great Ships? Who are they?"... the location of that entry for the people was in Delaware, and you guessed it, the Delaware trace themselves back to "the grandfathers...aka The Leni Lenape." According to history, after this last entry was made, the ships were found to be that of a Swedish expedition to the Americas and that particular band was virtually wiped out due to disease. Yakoke , Theresa , now I know !
Thank you. I had come across the Chata a few times, and had wonder about the difference. I don't know any Chahta in my area, plenty of Cherokee though, so had no one to ask. I wish I could make contact with Chahta in the state. Thanks again. Dodie Harrison wrote: > The spelling is Chahta. That's true. There's a new mound site(ritual place) found and completely catalogued near Ponchatoula, Louisiana in Tangipahoa Parish. Call the library there. I think some of the publicly accessible info is there. Phone 504-386-6554. I attended a public forum there on it a couple of years ago. It's a horseshoe shaped mound. There's also alot of uncatalogued sites around here that are defiled. Folks have their little collections. Please note I have another e-mail address now. It is [email protected] -----Original Message----- From: Barbara Ellison <[email protected]> To: [email protected] <[email protected]> Date: Wednesday, August 23, 2000 10:17 AM Subject: Re: [CHAHTA] Chahta people.....pre-B.C. > Halito Hishi Ohoyo >Just got done having to delete over 100 emails, mostly from this place. :) >It wasn't the Aztecs who were in this area, Aztecs were down in Mexico, yes? Yes, I know the story but some friends and I are always saying, some of our people left here and went the route to Mongolia. Just having some fun. The spelling is Chahta. As you hear people pronounce it some who do not speak the language will say it like chadda, I was told in Mississippi that is where the Chata came from. If you listen to those who speak it because of nasalized sounds it is Chah ta. If you check the Choctaw Language Dictionary you will see the spelling of Chahta ----- Original Message ----- From: Dodie <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, August 23, 2000 7:42 PM Subject: Re: [CHAHTA] testing( Isuba Chata) > I would like to know why some spell it Chahta and then I see it Chata. Halito Greetings from CA. In Fresno there is a Choctaw named Jake McKinney who is a fluent speaker of the language. I do not know if you have ever attended any of our meetings or came to the California Gathering for Choctaw it is the 3rd weekend of April each year, there you will find many many Choctaws (2000 over the weekend for this year) Many of whom are fluent in the language as well as beginners like yourself.
