Surnames: Chadwell, James, Schoonover, Stephenson Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.chadwell/80.83.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm interested in Rebecca Schoonover. We know she married J.W.B. Chadwell in Athens Co., 26 April, 1838. In the 1840 census we find the J.W.B. Chandwll houslehold with a male age 30-40 (b. 1800-1810) a female 20-30 (b. 1810-1820) and a female child under 5. All this makes sense... they married 1838, had a child by 1840. He is in his 30's, she in her 20's. I don't have my notes, but if I remember correctly, her death is in a cemetery source...probably Peters... and says she died 1844 age 29. If so, she would not be the mother of Mary and and Sarah, daus of John W.B. But if she was 29 in 1844, she would have been born ca 1831 and would have been too young to marry him in 1838. I think it is more likely that she died 1849, age 29, placing her birth at ca 1820, making her 18 when she married and barely 20 when the census was taken. We know she drowned, with her infant daughter Caroline, when a canoe tipped over on Sunday Creek. And we know from subsequent records that John W.B. had daus Sarah b. ca. 1846-47 (married Lewis Stephenson) and Mary b. ca 1848-49 (m. Alexander James). So now we have Rebecca marrying at 18, having her first child by time she was 20 or 21 , then 6 years that produced no children- or at least none who survived past infancy, then a three daughters in three years... Sarah, Mary, Caroline. It's certainly not impossible, or even improbable, but it is does give me pause. I wish I could find something that confirmed Rebecca Schoonover as the mother of Sarah and/or Mary.
