It's not out of the question and would make for one of those genealogy nightmares of who is whom. On the other hand, if there is only one, there has to be some glaring mistakes made someplace. >From the dates you listed James who married Susan Sutton dau. of Thomas and Hannah Lawson Suttonand James who married Amanda Yeary dau. of Jacob and Serelda Chadwell Yeary seem to be a generation apart. Could they be 2nd cousins? They couldn't be first cousins because that would make to two Adams brothers. The only way they could be uncle and nephew would be if the older James had a father named Adam and a brother named Adam and the brother named one of his sons after his brother--James Whitten Yeary. I also need to go back and review the relationship of Jacob and Adam Yeary. But anyway it slices everyone appears to be related. Send me your snail mail address to famroots@aol.com, and I'll send you what I can find from the book.

I am getting confused too. I went to Rootsweb.com and looked at the trees posted. There are several that lists James Whitten Yeary and his wife as Susan Sutton. That James Whitten Yeary has a birthdate listed as Dec 20, 1820. Then there are two trees posted with a James Whitten Yeary that was born in 1866 and he is listed as being married to Amanda Yeary, the daughter of Jacob and Serelda (Chadwell) Yeary. Both James are listed with a father named Adam. If you have it, would you mind emailing me a copy of the page that says Serelda Chadwell was Lee Majors' great grandmother? I'd really like to see it. Does it state who the child was of Serelda Chadwell and Jacob Yeary that was supposedly Lee's grandmother or grandfather? Stacy Smith

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/2NI.2ACEB/11.13.24.51.2.1 Message Board Post: Stacie, Pleasant Murphy Chadwell and Elizabeth Brown Chadwell had a son named Pleasant Millard "P.M." Chadwell. "Millard", as he came to be known in the later census tables of Kentucky, married Nancy Jane Smith in 1897 in Knox County, KY. In Millard's wedding records, he also listed his parents as Pleasant Murphy Chadwell and Elizabeth "Betsy" Brown Chadwell. Jerry Gregory, the author of "Touching the Past", also has William Chadwell listed as Pleasant Murphy's father. Early Claiborne County, TN and Lee County, VA census tables show them in close proximity to each other. David Chadwell, William's father, may have had a will. I suspect there may be deeds that connect William Chadwell (1779-1859) and Pleasant Murphy Chadwell (1820-d. early 1860's), believed to be his son.

Was James Whitten Yeary married twice? I received the information that James Whitten was married to Susan Sutton, dau. of Thomas and Hannah Lawson Sutton, from Junior Edens. I believe he is a direct-line descendent. When I had a computer crash, I lost some of my information about the Balls, Yearys, Campbells, and Browns. I have some hard copies of old e-mails, so I'll look to see what I can find. I need to do a lot of work on my Balls and Yearys. FYI--my lineage is Henry "David" Yeary & Elizabeth Croxstall>Elizabeth Yeary & Moses Ball>Elizabeth Ball & Michael T. Brown>John Brown & Sarah Brown (early research said her surname was Ball)>Mary Jane Brown & Bishop Nevels>Sarah Elizabeth Nevels & Golvin Chadwell>Maggie Jane Chadwell & Lieu A.J. Raney (my grand parents). Three of senior Henry & Elizabeth Yeary's children married children of George & Kessiah Ann Hanson Ball. Mary Polly Yeary married John Ball; Elizabeth married Moses Ball (my line), and Martha Yeary married Henry Ball. There were lots of double-first cousins in that next generation. Here is another tight grouping. Of Adam & Henrietta Morgan Yeary's children, four married Snavelys. Sarah Matilda married Jacob Snavely; Martha Jane married James Snavely; Elizabeth married Adam Snavely; and Emily Ann married Stuart Amos Snavely. Sarah Matilda & Jacob Snavely were the parents of my gr-gr-uncle Josiah Joseph Grant Snavely since he was married to my gr-grandmother's sister Martha Evelyn Nevels. Oh, well, I think everyone must have been just a little bit kin in those early communities of the 1800s.

I was confused about your first posting but after I looked over the tree that was sent to me, it makes sense now. The tree I posted was from James Whitten Yeary's side, (gg grandfather of Lee Majors). James Whitten Yeary married Jacob and Serelda's daughter Amanda Yeary ( grandmother of Lee Majors). I'll have to go back to the messageboards and see if that's correct but that is the information that was sent to me. Stacy Smith

Pleasant Murphy Chadwell and Elizabeth "Betsy" Brown Chadwell are believed to have been killed during the Civil War. One of their sons, David Crockett Chadwell, lived up into his 90's in Clay County, KY before he died. He related the story of how he and his brothers had to hide from armed marauders who pillaged their home for food, livestock and horses in the early 1860's. David Crockett Chadwell's older brother, Pleasant Millard "P.M."Chadwell was forced into Turney's brigade in the last couple of years of the war. "P.M." or Millard, as he came to be known, was captured by the Union army at the Battle of the Wilderness and held prisoner at Elmira in NY for the last year of the war. He and David Crockett Chadwell later migrated to KY in the 1870's. Millard raised my grandfather. Millard died around the 1920's. Pleasant Murphy Chadwell and his wife Betsy might have only had 'field stones' or wooden crosses to mark their graves. The area where they are believed to have been buried has long since been flooded by the dam projects around Clinch Mountain.

Pleasant was a brother to my gr-gr-grandfather Samuel Chadwell, who moved from Ewing, VA to Norwood, MO in the late 1880's. The Chadwell Heritage Book only indicates that Pleasant and Elizabeth died between 1860 and 1870 since Pleasant M., David C. and John were living with their sister, Lucy A. Brooks, in the 1870 Claiborne County, TN Census. One of Pleasant's sons Alexander Chadwell moved to MO with his uncle Sam Chadwell. Alex and his wife Caroline Campbell Chadwell had a son named Charlie. Charlies married Carrie Richardson and had two sons, Ralph and Paul. Ralph and Paul both lived in the Macomb/Norwood, MO areas. Their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren recently held a Chadwell Reunion for the family. After Charlie Chadwell died, Carrie married Sam Chadwell, a son of Rev. Golvin Chadwell. Golvin was a first cousin to Pleasant Chadwell and son of old Sam Chadwell. (Sam Chadwell was a son of William Chadwell and Katie Lane Chadwell. William was a son of Capt. David Chadwell and Elizabeth Turner.) Golvin Chadwell was my great-grandfather. (I suppose you know that the actor Lee Majors is in Pleasant Murphy Chadwell's line. Pleasant's daughter Serelda married Jacob Yeary in Lee County, VA. She was the great grandmother of Harvey Lee Yeary (Lee Majors).

The trial takes you to the Ridge Trial, Hensley (settlement), and Sand Cave. If you go to the visitor center at Cumberland Gap, you will find a huge map of the area that shows the location of Chadwell Gap in the mountains to the east of the Cumberland Gap. Years ago in my research I found a deed listing which indicated that Capt. David Chadwell owned a portion of the Cumberland Mtns. or land that butted against the mountains. I believe the gap is named in his honor. Capt. David Chadwell was my 4th great-grandfather.

There was a Middleton Station in Lee County and Walter, Sr. is spoken of in Kincaid's "Wilderness Road." as follows: "There were 3 small companies of militia stationed on the road under the authorization of the Federal Government." One company was commanded by Lt. Walter Middleton on Turkey Creek. "They patroled the road from Crab Orchard to Cumberland Gap. This was the spring of 1792." Polly Chadwell Middleton was only 18 when their son, Walter Middleton, Jr was born in 1795. By 1801, Walter Middleton had died of wounds received in the Revolutionary War and Polly married Benjamin Cloud. Mary Polly Chadwell Middleton was a sister to my 3rd-great grandfather William Chadwell.
