Author: Stosh61 Surnames: Chadwell/Bradberry/Gaylor/Goldston/Ruyle/Ruhle/Rule Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.chadwell/198/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Here's my mystery family: My gggrandmother, Sarah Jane Chadwell was b. Aug 1866 in Brighton, Polk Co., MO. Her brother, William Samuel Chadwell, was b. Dec. 1869 in San Antonio, Bexar Co., TX, according to his family. (I have no proof of either of these births, if I did, I would know their parents names!) These children had a sister or half-sister, Ida Ann, who was shot by James Gaylor in 1872 in Polk County, MO and the parents were listed as Martha and William Chadwell. I have a marriage certificate from Bolivar for Martha Bradberry and William Chadwell on March 28, 1870, so that is confirmed. William's deposition after Ida was shot states that Martha had Ida before he married her, therefore, she was either from a previous marriage or illegitimate. The other children were also born before this marriage, so I don't know if he was married before, or she was, or they stole some children in the night and passed them off as theirs! >> In 1850 the only Bradberry living in Polk County, MO was a 2-year old William Bradberry, living with Reuben and Mary Gaylor, the parents of James Gaylor. There is no sign of Martha and she should have been about 5. It can't be a coincidence that the Gaylor's and Bradberry's are so closely tied, unless they are related somehow. I think this is the connection, but haven't been able to prove it. The father of Mary Gaylor, nee Goldston, had two sisters who married Bradberry's, but I can find no record of children from these marriages. It doesn't mean there were none, it's just hard to find them because they were so long ago! In the 1860 Census of Polk Co., MO Martha was 15, wasn't married and didn't have any kids. She was living with an Adison Low and family as a servant or housekeeper in Polk County. Some distant relatives of mine suggest that she may have married a Rule (Ruhle, Ruhl, Ruyle or a hundred other spellings), I have never found any useful clues along these lines, but it was between census years. The Ruyle name also fits with the Gaylor/Goldston family. >> >> I traced William Samuel's side of the family down just so I could find out what story was passed down to his descendants and it is virtually the same. His granddaughter says that the mother, Martha, died fairly young of ovarian cancer or something similar not long after Sarah got married. I know she was alive in 1882, because she gave permission for Sarah to get married to John Bryan in Pleasant Hope. By 1900 there is no one left in Missouri. Sarah ended up in Washington state and William (jr.) moved to Colorado. The father disappeared somewhere along the line. >> >> In the 1880 Census, Martha Chadwell was living with a John Brown and family, and several other people, some of whom are listed as insane. While there is a story that they all lived in the poorhouse until Sarah Chadwell was 8, that would have been around 1874, not 1880. In 1880, Sarah is living with John Emlet and family, and Samuel (William jr.) is living with Nathaniel Wilson's widow, Sarah Wilson, and family. Sarah Wilson's home is where the marriage of Sarah Chadwell and John Bryan took place. I would appreciate ANY leads with this. I have been searching for years! Richmond, VA Mar. 26, 1924 With regard to the Chadwell Book, I attempted to get a copy of the book a number of years ago, but none was available. David Chadwell in your request for information. The information that I mention is a combination of my on research and that of various Chadwell cousins including Myrtle Braun, Sharon Chadwell Phillips, and Ray Williams. The following is an excerpt taken from Sharon's book about the Chadwells. "David Chadwell was pruportedly a man large in stature, over six feet tall, with red hair, a stong physique, and known for his courage and daring. He was either the son of George or John Chadwell, was born in England according to tradition in 1732/3, and emigrated to the American Colonies with his parents in the early 1740s. The names of his children would indicate that he is related to George and John Chadwll. Two of David's children were given the names John and Barthena--these are the names of John, son of George and Jemima, and his wife, Barthena. There are no records that show the names of John's children." (Some researchers believe that David was born in America instead of England.) Records show that David owned land in Halifax/Pittsylvania/Henry Co., VA. Later, David moved to Russell Co., VA, then Lee Co., VA, and finally, Claiborne Co., TN. David married abt 1770 to Elizabhet Turner (1752-54-?), daughter of John/Jessey Turner. (Some researchers believe this may have been David's second marriage.) "From all indications David Chadwell was an adventurous, ambitious man, but also a devoted family man. He acquired thousands of acres of land in the southwest section of VA and Northeastern TN. According to records, he registered his cattle mark and was granted permission to establish a grist mill in Russell Coounty, VA in 1790. We also know that he ran a way station and tavern (Chadwell Station in Lee Co., VA) so he was a man of diversified interest. He was obviously successful in most of his undertakings as he amassed a sizable estate. This, in spite of the fact that he could not write his name." In 1979 the DAR dedicated a memorial stone for Capt. David Chadwll, who died in 1833. The Breastworks Hill Cemetery is near Tazewell, Claiborne Co., TN. Surnames: Chadwell, James, Schoonover, Stephenson Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/surnames.chadwell/80.83.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I'm interested in Rebecca Schoonover. We know she married J.W.B. Chadwell in Athens Co., 26 April, 1838. In the 1840 census we find the J.W.B. Chandwll houslehold with a male age 30-40 (b. 1800-1810) a female 20-30 (b. 1810-1820) and a female child under 5. All this makes sense... they married 1838, had a child by 1840. He is in his 30's, she in her 20's. I don't have my notes, but if I remember correctly, her death is in a cemetery source...probably Peters... and says she died 1844 age 29. If so, she would not be the mother of Mary and and Sarah, daus of John W.B. But if she was 29 in 1844, she would have been born ca 1831 and would have been too young to marry him in 1838. I think it is more likely that she died 1849, age 29, placing her birth at ca 1820, making her 18 when she married and barely 20 when the census was taken. We know she drowned, with her infant daughter Caroline, when a canoe tipped over on Sunday Creek. And we know from subsequent records that John W.B. had daus Sarah b. ca. 1846-47 (married Lewis Stephenson) and Mary b. ca 1848-49 (m. Alexander James). So now we have Rebecca marrying at 18, having her first child by time she was 20 or 21 , then 6 years that produced no children- or at least none who survived past infancy, then a three daughters in three years... Sarah, Mary, Caroline. It's certainly not impossible, or even improbable, but it is does give me pause. I wish I could find something that confirmed Rebecca Schoonover as the mother of Sarah and/or Mary.
