David Crockett Chadwell was my gg grandfather. His oldest child Laura (my g grandmother; she lived to age 101) told me that his parents died during the war and "left four little boys at home alone" They saw the soldiers coming and hid their food under the mattress and took their cow and pony to the hills, but the soldiers took everything. When "Dave" came to Clay County he was still wearing long shirts without pants. He held a torch for a man to make his first pair of shoes in Clay County. I have a Cred S. Chadwell, birth and death dates and spouse the same as you mentioned. He was High Sheriff of Lee County, VA. His parents were: Harvey Chadwell and Fannie Ayers, I found Cred's info in the 1900 Census of Balls Mill Precinct, Lee County, VA. Harvey was b. 22 Sept. 1887 in Virginia and d. June 1976 in Ewing, Lee Co., VA. Cred's family can be found in Hattie M. Boles', Early Settlers of Lee County, Virginia, Vol. II, Page 912. I have no brothers and sisters listed for Cred, there were probably more, but I haven't followed this exact line that far. Edna (Chadwell) Slayton I think the Family History Library in Salt Lake has a copy, but not sure if it has been microfilmed.
