    3. Sigurd, I hope it's this one (3 Jun 1998) Max >But will we be able to convert the one level sources in cftw2 to two >level sources in cftw3 after an import of a cftw2 database? I knew this question was coming sooner or later and I have provided a way to make this as painless as possible. So let me explain how it is done: It is all done in the Source Editor. Bring up the source editor (after an import from Ver 2) and you will see all sources are in the Reference List with none in the Details List. So what you will have to do is manually break down each source note into it's component parts. Let me illustrate with an example. Suppose I start out with the following sources (all in Ref List): Lund, Ira J., Personal Records, Birth Certificate. Lund, Ira J., Personal Records, Marriage Certificate. Clark, Kay L., "History of MH Lund", page 23. Clark, Kay L., "History of MH Lund", page 45-46. Clark, Kay L., "History of MH Lund", page 70. What I want to end up with is only 2 References and 5 Details: Ref: Lund, Ira J., Personal Records Det: Birth Certificate Det: Marriage Certificate Ref: Clark, Kay L., "History of MH Lund" Det: page 23 Det: page 45-46 Det: page 70 Step 1. Create a NEW Reference with just the Ref part of the source. Step 2. Add appropriate Details for that Reference. Step 3. MERGE a Source Detail with the identical Source Reference. This does two things. 1. It will change ALL pointers from individuals and events from the old Reference (Lund, Ira J., Personal Records, Birth Certificate) to the new Detail (Det: Birth Certificate) and 2. It will delete the old Reference. Thus you will not have to go through every event and every individual making sure they are connected to the right source. The MERGE Source allows you to merge two Details, two References or a Detail with a Reference. In the case we have descibed you want to make sure you select the Detail First and the Reference Second. The first selection is always the PRIMARY and is retained. The Second is the Secondary and is deleted after pointers refering to it are switched to point to the Primary source. I hope this is sufficiently clear that you can follow this.
